Samsung’s SH100 Wi-Fi-Enabled Camera Offers Remote Android Control

samsung sh100.jpgDigital cameras with Wi-Fi capability is nothing new, but, today at the Consumer Electronics Showcase, Samsung announced a new model, the SH100, that has a very impressive Wi-Fi connectivity feature. Like the other Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, the Samsung SH100 lets you upload photos and video directly to Facebook, Picasa, and YouTube. What makes the SH100 stand out is that you can pair it with a Samsung Galaxy S phone and use the smartphone to remotely preview the frame, zoom in and out, take the picture, and geotag it.

The GPS feature is a nice way to remind you exactly where you were when you took the photo. The addition of the integration with the Galaxy S makes taking group shots easier. It means no more running between your camera and your friends to set up the perfect shot.

The built-in Wi-Fi can automatically back up your photo to your PC. You can use DLNA to connect wirelessly to your HDTV and see your photos and videos right away. You can also send photos directly from the camera to individual e-mail addresses. If you’re worried about the time it takes to upload and process large files, the SH100 comes with an account with mobile hotspot provider Boingo, which gives you access to over 200,00 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.

Oh, and as for the specs, it features a 14.2-megapixel CCD sensor, a 3-inch LCD display, and a 5X optical zoom. The SH100 will be available for $199.99 in March. Check out the full press release for more info.

New image of Olympus E-PL2 leaks, shows off macro spotlight

We’ve already seen leaked images of the Olympus E-PL2, the much talked about follow up to the E-PL1. The Micro Four Thirds is expected to boast a new 14-42mm f/3.5 – 5.6 kit lens, a ‘direct movie’ button, a high-resolution 3-inch display, and an optional Bluetooth model. From the new image above, however, we can see that there will also be an optional ‘Medusa’ version of the cam with a closeup spotlight for all those insane macro shots you’ll undoubtedly be taking. The adjustable LED will also not require an extra battery, so this is one add-on we’ll definitely be seriously considering.

What Happens When You Photograph Lightning With a Really Expensive Camera

Lightning_photo.jpeg

It looks like the above. Scientists created artificial lightning via rockets and wire, so they could shoot the thing with their fancy new camera–which, for the record, can snap photos at a speedy one-sixth the speed of light (“Something moving this fast would go from the Earth to the moon in less than ten seconds,” says a scientist).

Among the revelations of the super-expensive/very heavy camera is the fact that the bolt contains a bunch of x-rays at the tip, with few located in the trail of the lightning.

Neat. Just don’t try this at home–at least not with some serious cash on-hand.
“You can’t just go buy a camera and point it at lightning,” said the aforementioned scientist. “We had to make it.”

This Unofficial 3-in-1 iPad Camera Connector Has SD Card Slots

3-in-1 Connector for iPad

It’s not sanctioned by Apple, but over at the M.I.C (Made in China) shop, this 3-in-1 iPad Camera Connector can be yours for approximately $25 US, list price. The kit fits into the 30-pin Dock Connector on the bottom of your iPad, and has a USB port for your camera to connect, and also features two slots for an SD card and a MicroSD card if you need to plug the card from your camera or phone into your iPad to transfer photos.
The kit comes in white and black, and is available now. Since the product isn’t official, there’s no way to tell if Apple will pull something in a future iOS update to disable the functionality, but if you find yourself with more SD cards than USB cables, this might be a quick way to get your photos off of the card and onto your iPad.

Sylvania HD1Z 720p HD $39 at Woot

Thumbnail image for Sylvania_HD1Z.jpg

Woot has some pretty odd talk about the whole Julian Assange / WikiLeaks/ DDoS / MasterCard thing. A preemptive strike (or plea, rather) against the folks in Operation Payback who might attempt to take down the deal site once it’s down with Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Amazon, et. al. Don’t worry Woot, you’re probably fine.

The site also has a super-good deal on a shiny new HD camcorder. You can pick up the Sylvania HD1Z for $39, if you direct your browser on over there. The camcorder shoots video in 720p at 30 frames a second. It has HDMI out, 4x digital zoom, an SD card slot (which is nice, seeing as how the thing only has 46MB of memory built-in0, and a built-in speaker and mic.

You can also shoot still with the thing and upload it instantly to YouTube and Facebook. No official word yet from the White House regarding the deal.
