The Kensington PowerLift Props and Charges Up Your iPhone

iPhone and iPod docks are a dime a dozen, but the new Kensington PowerLift is a dock that’s designed to fit you just right. The dock is a compact package with a 30-pin dock connector on one side, a kick-stand for your iPhone on another side, a battery under the hood, and a USB cable tucked into the top.

The dock connector folds out to the angle you want to keep your iPhone propped up to, and the kick-stand folds up to keep your iPhone in place and propped up.

The USB cable folds out from the base of the dock and connects to either your power brick or your computer for charging and syncing, but you may not need it thanks to the PowerLift’s built-in 1200 mAh battery, which can give your iPhone a boost when it’s running low. When not in use, the PowerLift folds up into a small square brick and packs away nicely. It’s available for pre-order from Kensington for $49.99 list price.

HP / Palm tablet to feature Touchstone dock, cloud storage, Beats audio and Tap-to-Share smartphone integration

Now that the kitty’s out of the gemstone bag, we’re slowly starting to connect the dots that obscure the details of Palm’s soon to be announced “Topaz” and “Opal” tablets. First up is information from one of our original trusted sources who claims that the Opal will measure 180 x 144 x 13mm (making it a bit shorter and wider than the 190.1 x 120.5 x 12-mm Galaxy Tab) and feature a 1,024 x 768 pixel TFT LCD display. We’re told that the bigger Topaz tablet will ship about three months before Opal and measures in at 241 x 190 x 13mm (making it nearly identical to the 242.8 x 189.7 x 13.4-mm iPad) with a pixel resolution that could be the same as the Opal (our source wasn’t 100 percent on this). We’re also hearing that the “premium audio” we saw on that leaked marketing slide will indeed be powered by HP’s Beats audio processing, and that the tablets will be provided with “tens of gigabytes” of cloud storage — so much that it dwarfs the local storage on the devices. Kensington PowerLift is a Chunky Charger for iPhone

Kensington’s PowerLift is a combo dock, stand and battery charger for the iPhone, with a 1200 mAh battery on board to add a good chunk of a day to the battery life of your phone.

How much extra time? Kensington says 3.5-hours of talk-time, 1.5-hours of FaceTime, 5-hours of video and 20 hours of music.

To fit in this big battery, Kensington ignored skinny-case or tiny pocket-dongle designs and went for a heftier dock. The PowerLift can hang off the bottom of your phone while you use it but if you flip up the stand and drop the thing onto a desk it looks a lot more natural. And if you are using it alongside a computer – or if you should chance across a power outlet on your rare travels through the corporate world – you can flip out a USB cable to charge or sync. What it doesn’t do – despite its name – is toss Alien Queens into airlocks. Available for pre-order, $50.

Akai SynthStation49 dock / giant keyboard combo is less portable than its predecessor

You may or may not be familiar with Akai‘s previous iPad dock / keyboard combo, the SynthStation. The thing is, the original SynthStation’s keyboard was miniature, and the dock was designed for the iPhone — presumably so that it was simultaneously portable. Well, the new Akai SynthStation49 adds a full keyboard, though it obviously loses that portability. Regardless, the SynthStation49 packs nine MPC-style pads, dedicated pitch and mod wheels, and transport controls. The internal audio boasts 1/4-inch outputs, and the hardware is MIDI supporting, so you can use the keyboard as a MIDI input device. This one is currently awaiting certification from Apple, so we can’t say when it’ll be released, nor do we have pricing. Hit up the source link for more details.

Yantouch Black Diamond 3D ambience iPhone dock hands-on

While we weren’t busy kicking up dust on the CES floors, we sat down with Taiwan-based Yantouch to have a fiddle with its latest product, the Black Diamond. When not in use, it really is just a gorgeous spherical black diamond, or at least its faceted front half is; but slip in an iPhone 4 with the Black Diamond app enabled, and you get a funky sound sensitive mood lamp. On top of that, the dock also charges up your iPhone while it shows off its colors, and somewhere at the bottom there’s some black magic that channels out amplified audio from the phone, although actual speakers would be even nicer.

Ultimately, Yantouch sees the Black Diamond as a developing platform for potential applications like an outdoor temperature indicator, or some sort of caller ID color tagging tool for seeing from afar who’s calling. If all goes well, Yantouch will even consider making an Android version, but we’re not sure if the $79 price tag will immediately catch on. Anyhow, check out our hands-on video after the break.

Perch: the Bluetooth speaker / smartphone dock of your dreams, shipping soon for $180

Okay, so maybe that’s a stretch, but there’s no question that Quirky‘s latest socially-developed product is one of the slicker wireless speaker / dock combos out there. Dubbed Perch, this two-piece device acts as a standalone Bluetooth speaker if you’d like, but it also includes a dock / tray for holding your device while it’s charging. It’s model and brand agnostic, and it’s up for pre-order right now for $179.99. Gallery’s below, but don’t dive in if you’re easily swayed by eye candy.

Motorola Atrix 4G, HD multimedia dock, and laptop dock hands-on

Earlier today, we got a complete demo and some seat time with the Motorola Atrix 4G for AT&T at Motorola’s CES event, including its HD multimedia dock and laptop dock. The phone looks similar to the Samsung Vibrant, but with a black screen bezel and a tastefully patterned matte back cover. Build quality is very good, as we’d expect from a Motorola device. The QHD (960 x 540) display is gorgeous and the phone feels ultra snappy, thanks to the dual-core processor running Froyo. In fact, despite still running preliminary firmware, we recorded a blazing 2,616 score on the Quadrant test. The power button at the top back of the Atrix 4G also serves as a fingerprint reader, and there’s a dual-LED flash flanking the 5 megapixel camera. Orbitsound T14 soundbar debuts at CES, will take its sweet time getting to market (hands-on)

You’ll be forgiven for being a little misty on who exactly Orbitsound is — the British company has only sold its T12 soundbar in the domestic market — but today it’s reminding everyone of its presence with a brand new product for CES-goers in the T14 you see above. The company’s patented “spatial stereo” sound is still the big selling point, promising a revolutionary aural experience that eliminates the need to occupy the traditional sweet spot for enjoying stereo sound. That’s achieved via six 2.5-inch drivers and a studio-class amp that “senses” surrounding acoustic conditions and calibrates output for best results. A bold claim, to be sure, but you’d expect no less for something that will cost $600 when it becomes Orbitsound’s first global launch later this year. Wireless technology is also put to good use, with the T14 communicating through the air with its accompanying subwoofer and wireless iPod / iPhone dock. We’ll be tracking one down while here in Vegas and trying to figure out just how spaced out its sound really is.

Iomega SuperHero iPhone dock backs up contacts and photos to SD card (video)

In addition to Boxee-addled media devices and the customary run of new storage solutions, Iomega‘s got its own take on the iPod dock to show off. The SuperHero can back up photos and contacts from your iPhone (3G model and up) and iPod touch (second-gen and up) to an SD card — no apps or music, unfortunately, due to restrictions in the API. The associated app pops up automatically when you slot in the device, and there’s a few options for fine-tuning what exactly gets saved. A smart idea, but it’d be nice if we had more output options like audio (for an elegant stereo solution) or USB (just in case you did have a computer handy, with or without iTunes). SuperHero’ll set you back $69.99 and comes bundled with a 4GB SDHC card, but more importantly, there’s an amusing video ad to see. It’s after the break.
