The iPad gets a Facebook app, finally

Kind of like eating a peanut butter sandwich with no jelly, the most obvious app missing from the iPad has been Facebook — until today. The New York Times reports that the site has finally confirmed the app’s availability just in time for eager social networkers to like, subscribe and stalk from their slates. According to software engineer Leon Dubinsky, the app will highlight the multitouch awesomeness of the iPad, something that’s unavailable from the website alone even from a touchscreen device. The folks at FB also added that some of the newly released features will be integrated into the iPhone app as well, making it a win / win for iOS fanatics. Consider it liked. Motorola EX225 and EX226 saunter through FCC like nobody’s watching

Like we said, the Status shouldn’t have much to worry about, but Motorola’s recently outed Facebook feature phone (along with its less socially aware twin) just passed through the FCC. The obligatory tests reveal support for AT&T’s 3G bands, although curiously enough, only the EX225 handles both spectra; the EX226 will connect to Ma Bell’s 850MHz band just fine, but not its 1900MHz counterpart. The shame doesn’t end there, either, as the Facebook version supports 802.11n, whereas its sibling does not. Who knew Moto would play such a blatant form of favoritism with its own children? At least phones don’t have feelings — we think.

Showtime launches Anytime streaming portal, social iPad app

Just in time for the return of everyone’s favorite serial killer, Showtime Anytime soft-launched recently, bringing online access to the network’s library of movies, TV shows and more. Multichannel News reports AT&T U-verse subscribers are the first to gain access, although this same content has already been streaming on Comcast’s Xfinity TV website and app. It’s no HBO Go yet — more cable companies and a few mobile apps will be necessary to match its rival there — but the approach is the same, after pulling its shows from Netflix this TV Everywhere offering hopes to add enough value to keep viewers on the traditional pay-TV train a little longer. While there’s no self-branded streaming app yet, the channel has also launched a Showtime Social iPad app to keep viewers tied in with their friends and other viewers while they watch — let us know if it makes Dexter any more / less creepy.

Adidas builds intelligent soccer cleats that can outwit even Joey Barton

Impoverished football soccer clubs, with their massive stadiums, billionaire owners and millionaire star players have it awful hard, you know. If a club wanted a statistical analysis of the team’s movements over the 90 minutes (more if Sir Alex Ferguson is involved) then it needs to spend big on a ProZone statistics system. That’s all due to change, thanks to Adidas’ new adizero f50 miCoach — an “intelligent football boot” that includes a space for the miCoach Speed Cell, a tracking device that works like a souped-up Nike+iPod. The chip records your speed, sprint times, distance, step and stride rates, stores it for up to seven hours and pushes it over WiFi or USB to the device of your choice. You’ll be able to share your stats online with friends via Facebook and compare them to pros like diminutive pitchman Lionel Messi, diminutive Welshman Gareth Bale and the, ah, not-so-diminutive Emmanuel Adebayor. A pair of boots, Speed Cell and dongle will require your bank account to shrink to the tune of €245 ($330) and will hit the stores in November — just in time for you to sit indoors during the snowy January transfer window.

Spotify users get a ‘private listening’ mode, Facebook account still required

It may not be addressing complaints from those bemoaning the need for a Facebook account in the first place, but Spotify is now at least giving folks an easy way to listen to what they like without broadcasting it to their friends. That comes in the form of a new “private listening” mode, which can easily be turned on and off at will — the other option is to unlink your Facebook account completely. Rumor: Facebook iPad App to Debut at Apple iPhone Event

We’ve been without an official iPad Facebook app for so long it has seemed as if it would never arrive. But rumor has it we won’t be waiting for it much longer.

There’s a chance Facebook’s iPad app and an HTML 5-based mobile platform (rumored to be codenamed “Project Spartan”) are ready to hit the prime time, according to multiple reports. Both could be introduced at Apple’s iPhone event this Tuesday.

We first got a sneak peak at what looked to be Facebook’s iPad app in July. It was tucked away inside Facebook’s iPhone app and could be accessed by tweaking a setting when running it on your iPad (until the hack was removed). News of the mysterious “Project Spartan” also showed up this summer. The project was rumored to “use Apple’s own devices against them to break the stranglehold they have on mobile app distribution,” according to technology blog TechCrunch, but it could instead be used to demonstrate iOS 5’s HTML 5 capabilities at Apple’s upcoming media event.

The news about “Project Spartan” was discovered on a Facebook mobile developer’s page that has since been taken down.

If Facebook’s iPad app and Project Spartan don’t end up taking the stage at 1 Infinite Loop on Tuesday, the two products may be unveiled at Facebook HQ on a later date.

Life of George melds Lego bricks with iOS for ‘digital-to-physical’ gameplay, captures our hearts

There isn’t much that can’t be done with some Mindstorming and plenty of Legos, so color us intrigued by the Lego Group’s new game, Life of George. Using a free EyeCue-enabled iOS app, players are tasked with recreating George’s photographs using 144 included Lego bricks on a specialized “green screen-like” gaming mat. Once the model is complete, you’ll take a photo with your iDevice to be scored based on your building speed and accuracy to the original picture. The $30 kit promises 12 levels featuring 10 photos each, and varying difficulty levels. For added replay value, there’s a two player game and a creation mode which lets you create playable models out of your own snapshots. To sweeten this story even more, you’ll also be able to keep up with George at his eponymously titled Facebook page, I am George. If the Lego-builder inside of you is itching to snag one, it’ll be available from Lego on October 1st. In the meantime, you’ll find more details in the PR after the break.

Flickr unveils Android app, introduces real-time Photo Session feature (video)

The Android community may be awaiting its very own Instagram app, but at least Flickr has now stepped up to fill the void. Yesterday, the photo-sharing service unveiled its very first Android app, along with a new social feature known as Photo Session. Available for free on the Android Market, the app allows users to snap, filter and upload their photos directly to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr, all from the comfort of their own handset. It also features an array of camera functions like flash, ratio selection, and shutter focus, along with ten high-quality filters. Photo Session, meanwhile, allows you to browse through images with your friends in real-time. All you have to do is round up your online comrades, start a session and begin flipping through a photostream. Every time you move on to the next image, your friends will, too, effectively turning any browsing affair into a collective, Don Draper-like slide show.
