Home-Made Ice-Claws Won’t Crampon Your Style

Snowed in? Sick of a winter where nothing but permafrost and ice stretch ahead of you until the spring thaw? Then you might consider buying some crampons. Better still, why not make your own, like Instructables member Kresimir Pregernik? And even better than that, why not give them a bad-ass name, like ice claws?

Pregernik’s ice claws are dead simple. Just take a t-section bracket/plate, and screw in a few rust-proof screws (galvanized steel is a good option). To stop them unscrewing, Pregernik soldered them in place. Then simply place them under your boots, locate the screw-heads between the grips of the shoes and strap into place. A bicycle toe-strap would be a good choice here, as it’s both secure and quick to remove.

Repeat for the other shoe and then head out into the snow, laughing as your hapless fellow pedestrians – less resourceful than you – slip and fall.

Going by Pregernik’s article, he really stress-tested his home-made ice-claws. He’s walking on steep ground, in a forest, covered with thick, slippery ice. And he’s taking photographs. That, on its own, is pretty bad-ass.

Japanese doctor turns hot toddy into superconductor catalyst

It’s rare that hot booze does anything more than get you drunk, and possibly make you sick, but according to Dr. Yoshihiko Takano, the drink you’re sucking on could facilitate the levitation of a train. After a party for a colleague, the Japanese scientist found that FeTe0.8S0.2 (composed of iron, tellurium, and tellurium sulfide), when soaked in warm booze overnight, shows signs of increased superconductivity — another in a long line of liquor-enhanced discoveries that could have far reaching effects on everything from consumer electronics to public transportation. Dr. Takano decided to test the material (known to become a superconductor after soaking in water) in the leftover alcohol from the party: beer, red wine, white wine, sake, shochu, and whiskey. As it turns out, red wine has the highest superconducting volume fraction at 62.4 percent — nearly four times higher than the ethanol-water control samples. Dr. Takano and his colleagues speculate that the ease with which wine and beer oxidize could be play a key role in the increase in superconductivity. We speculate that even a superconductor gets a little hopped up after soaking in a bottle of wine.

Sony has announced a camera-mounted CLM-V55 LCD screen for videographers. The WVGA-resolution monitor clips into the hot-shoe and hooks into the camera via an HDMI port. While it is designed to complement Sony’s Alpha SLRs, it will work with HDMI-capable bodies from any manufacturer.

WVGA is 800 x 480 pixels, and these make up a 5-inch screen. On-screen markers show both 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios, and there are lots of aids for manual focussing. A “color peaking” function highlights the edges of any area that is in sharp focus, and you can also zoom in on the full HD image to check focus. You can also adjust pretty much anything, from color temperature to brightness.

The CLM-V55 also swivels, and can be mounted off-camera, making it handy for stills-shooter, too.

The monitor will be on sale in March, although a price has yet to be announced.

HTC HD2 gets its very own Windows Phone 7 ROM (video)

While its original OS might be yesterday’s news, the 4.3 inch HTC HD2 with 1GHz Snapdragon processor still has plenty of life in it thanks to the industrious efforts of the global development community. A new Windows Phone 7 ROM has just been released by DFT (Dark Forces Team) for your flashing pleasures. While it’s said to be working at nearly 100 percent, it does come with the caveat of lacking access to any Windows Live services. As such, you won’t be downloading apps or media from Marketplace or setting up your avatar on Xbox Live — pretty serious omissions for a WP7 device. Nevertheless, if you’re an HD2 owner just aching for a taste of Microsoft’s newest OS then now’s your chance. Video of the ROM in action after the break.

Update: Well, that was fast. A video and instructions showing hacked access to Live services has now been posted. See the proof after the break.

[Thanks, br0adband]

Video: Robotic Philip K. Dick Head Rebuilt

The saga of sci-fi philosopher Philip K Dick’s robot head continues. The original head, which was lost in 2006, has been rebuilt by Hanson Robotics, maker of some creepily realistic robot faces. The new Dick head is just the latest chapter in a story which is as weird and twisted as any of the author’s own novels.

David Hanson, founder of Hanson Robotics, left the head in the overhead locker of a plane when traveling to Orange County (Dick’s own home for many years). The airline – America West – promised to send the head to SFO on the next flight, but it never arrived.

What happened next is unknown, but a fictional account of the head’s fate appeared on the Fiction Circus blog on April 1st. It’s clearly a joke, but good enough to share. According to writer Miracle Jones, the head was taken by a Russian pirate syndicate named “Little Bear”, and used to smuggle movies, videogames and other stolen data “between Russia and South America.” The head was – the story goes – recovered by Interpol in a sting operation in St.Petersberg.

No matter. The new v2.0 PKD head is a lot better than the original, and has some amazingly realistic expressions. In fact, this simulacrum manages to hop over the uncanny valley entirely: I could totally imagine hanging with this Dick head, dropping some Substance D and chewing the (Horselover) fat.

Volvo crashes C30 EV so you don’t have to, doesn’t spill a drop of battery juice

Try as it might to act hip and young, Volvo is still a company that’s associated with the name “safety,” and that’s really not a bad thing. Demonstrations like this help to reinforce that, with the company taking great pride in its C30 EV holding up as well as it did in a crash. It was subjected to a 40mph offset and, while it’s looking mighty deranged, no portions of the electric drivetrain were compromised. In other words: no battery goo leaked and no first responders would have been zapped. If that’s all a little too ghastly for you, fear not: there are plenty of pictures of a beautiful E30 with nary a body panel askew, including a peek into its trunk, which doesn’t appear to have been nearly as negatively affected as the poor Focus Electric.

Microsoft Releasing Plans For Windows Defender Beta 2

Microsoft Releasing Plans For Windows Defender Beta 2

Microsoft has changed the name of Microsoft AntiSpyware to Windows Defender, as many of you know. However, they have not released a version that has Windows Defender branded to the program. It should be coming around the February or March time frame. The biggest change is that Windows Defender Beta 2 will be able to run on Windows 2000, XP, 2003, R2, Vista, and LH server. They are even going to be releasing a 64-bit version of Windows Defender. Windows Defender Beta 2 has been in beta testing by Microsoft Employees since the beginning of December and there have been some good words spoken about it. I can’t wait to see it and test it myself!

New Multitouch Gestures Lead to Buttonless iPad Rumors

Along with the restoration of the hardware screen-orientation lock, the new iOS 4.3 beta for iPad adds new multitouch gestures to quickly switch between apps. Using four or five fingers, you can now swipe up to show the multitasking bar, and swipe left or right to switch between apps.

But it is a third gesture which is fueling speculation. If you pinch with your whole hand, you return to the home screen, no home-button press required. This, along with rumors supplied to the Boy Genius Report, has people wondering if the home button will be removed from iPad 2 and iPhone 5:

[We] are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

Think about that for a second. With the current iPad (or iPhone), you can hand it to Aunt Flora and she’ll work out how to use the thing in a few moments. The single button does one thing* – returns you to the home screen, providing a notional reset for the user. At the very worst, if Aunt Flora gets stuck you can call across the room “Press the button. The only button.”

Compare this to a buttonless design. How will Aunt Flora work out how to get back to the home screen? Who would ever think to try a five-fingered pinch? And how would you even do that one-handed on an iPhone? I’ll bet that even you, tech-savvy reader that you are, has never tried a five-finger pinch on your iPad.

My guess is that the button will stay, despite Apple’s obvious hatred for buttons in general. I can’t wait to try those gestures, though.

*Sure, the home button also pulls up the multitasking bar, and helps with screenshots, but Aunt Flora will probably never use those, either.

DARPA’s MSEE to develop new mathematical language, race of sentient machines

The hyper-ambitious folks at DARPA are totally over the current state of military data collection, and they’re pretty sure they know how to fix it: teach sensors how to think. Well, they’ve got an idea how to fix it, but they’ve put out a call for mathematician to do the dirty work. The Mathematics of Sensing, Exploitation, and Execution (MSEE) program seeks a unified mathematical language that cane teach sensors not only to collect data, but to interpret, and act on it too. The aim is to eliminate the “data deluge” that comes from ever-increasing streams of information, like cellphone intercepts and video drone feeds, allowing analysts to focus on the important stuff. Currently the onus falls on humans to interpret the overwhelming amount of information collected by military sensors, but DARPA is confident that the right algorithm could have machines interpreting the world as early as 2014. Which gives you right around three years to fulfill every fantasy you’ve ever had.
