CyberNotes: Speed Up and Tweak how Vista Indexes your Computer

I’m sure all of you are probably getting sick of me raving about Vista’s incredible integrated search, but it really is that good. When you get your computer all setup the first thing you might want to do is choose what locations and filetypes Vista is allowed to index. Remember, you really want to keep your index as slim as possible because that will mean that the searches are performed even faster.

Here’s what you need to do to customize the way Vista indexes your computer:

  1. Go to the Start Menu and type index into the search field. Press Enter when the Indexing Options appears. Note: if prompted with a User Account Control (UAC) warning press Continue.
    Vista Index
  2. The screen that you should now be at is essentially the central hub for controlling Vista search indexing. First, you can modify the locations that are currently indexed by clicking the Modify button:
    Vista Index
  3. Now navigate through your hard drive and select which folders you want to be indexed. For example, if you only want to search your own files then select your directory in the “Users” folder. When you finish selecting the folders press the OK button.
    Vista Index
  4. Now you should be back on the main Indexing options screen pictured in Step 2. Select Advanced and on the popup window choose the File Types tab. Go through and unselect any of the filetypes that you don’t think you’ll ever need. You can always go back and change this later on, so it isn’t that big of a deal if you uncheck something you didn’t mean to.
    Vista Index
  5. Lastly, go back to the Index Settings tab and select the option to Rebuild the index. This will ensure that your index is updated with the latest settings you just chose by erasing everything that has already been indexed.
    Vista Index
  6. Press OK on that window and press Close on the next window to exit the Indexing Options.

When I have everything on my computer indexed right now with all of the different filetypes, it has about 75,000 files indexed. If I go through and filter out the directories that I don’t really use along with the filetypes that I don’t care for I can trim that down to 30,000 files. That’s a pretty big difference and I can definitely notice a difference in speed when searching for things.

I’ve been using the final release of Vista for a little over a month now and I am really pleased with how it handles. In pre-release builds of Vista the search indexer would frequently crash when I was in the middle of a search, but the only thing I have had crash on me thus far is Firefox…and that is to be expected since I am using Firefox 3 pre-release builds that are fairly unstable.

Some of you may argue that there are plenty of desktop search application out there, such as Google Desktop Search, that will provide the same instant results without the need to upgrade to Vista. That’s true, but I always found those applications to either slow down my computer or I would simply forget to use them. Vista’s search is always right there in front of your face, and there is no way that you’ll forget to use it. Heck, I use the Search Bar in the Start Menu to run programs over trying to find the shortcuts! Microsoft made it so simple to use that Search Bar as well…just press the Windows Key on the keyboard and start typing your search because the Search Bar automatically receives the focus when you open the Start Menu.

I would also like to close by mentioning a nifty little add-on that a Microsoft employee made to make the Search Bar even more powerful. It’s called Start++ and will let you create custom search strings that can either perform a search on a website or launch a program. It has all kinds of uses, and for more information checkout the post that we made about it.

Mercedes kicks off F-Cell World Drive, circumnavigating the globe on hydrogen

Mercedes kicks off F-Cell World Drive, circumnavigating the globe on hydrogen

Fuel cell-powered cars provide the efficiency and driveability of an electric vehicle while also offering the unlimited range of a traditional gasoline powered car — assuming you can find a place to top off those hydrogen tanks. Right now that’s a bit of a problem, but Mercedes Benz is out to show that it’s not nearly as big of a hindrance as everyone makes it out to be. It’ll be driving the B-Class F-Cell model around the world, starting in Stuttgart and motoring down to Lisbon, flying over to the US and driving across that, then across Australia before hopping a boat to Shanghai and driving all the way across Asia, ultimately arriving back to Stuttgart facing in the same direction they left. The B-Class F-Cell can cover 400km on a tank and can be refilled in about three minutes. At this point we have no reason to believe that either Ewan McGregor nor Charlie Boorman will be along for the ride, but given how well things went in Log Way Round perhaps that’s for the best.

Four things still in AT&T’s iPhone pocket

AT&T could see users defect if Verizon introduces an iPhone as expected. But as derided as AT&T’s network is, the carrier retains some advantages over its rival.

Analog sunset begins, all the new Blu-ray players will only output HD via HDMI

Las Vegas Sunset

The chicken littles have been worried about this since long before the first Blu-ray (or even HD DVD) title was ever released, and the first step towards the analog sunset has officially come. Any new Blu-ray player announced after January 1st 2011 will only output HD via HDMI — players that started shipping last year can still be sold until the end of this year though. If you just love component video, you might figure you’ll be able to get a player today and continue to enjoy it for years to come, but maybe not. You see the studios also have the Image Constraint Token (ICT) which when set on a title will tell every and all Blu-ray players to down convert analog output to 540p. The only reprieve is that if its set on a title, it must be marked on the box, and of course it can’t be retroactively set (any title you own now will continue to play exactly the same way it does on your existing players). We’re waiting for final confirmation, but apparently the ICT hasn’t been an option to studios until now so start looking for the icon on your latest purchases. The final stage in the sunset is 2013 when analog outputs will be removed from Blu-ray players completely, but we suspect we’ll have better things to worry about by then like ultra HD or digital distribution.

Yoko Ono: Japan’s number one on Twitter

Much was made last year of the successful growth of Twitter in Japan, with even CEO Evan Williams coming over to Tokyo in 2010 and praising local users’ activities. Japanese tweeting recently set a new record, following on from their blitz of activity during the World Cup, with a momentous 6,939 tweets sent per second on January 1st this year.

The share of tweets in English has dropped to “just” half and recent stats are showing that Japanese is now the number two language on the service, covering 14% of messages. So, other than normal folks like us, who are the powerful personalities behind these tweets?

yoko-ono-twitter

It turns out that the Japanese Twitter user with the most followers is, not surprisingly, an international figure, and none other than Yoko Ono. Of course, she tweets in English, which probably explains why she has over one million followers. (This pales, perhaps rather predicatably, in comparison to American celebrities like Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber, or even Brits like Stephen Fry, who has over 2 million followers.)

Ono’s tweets have a whimsical and optimistic ring to them, often harking about world peace and the humane means to achieve this.

A recent example is:

Let’s dance together in our hearts and play the game of life in peace.

…and the pithy

We laugh, we heal, and we embrace.

Technically Ono is Japanese but seems to tweet almost exclusively in her adopted language. Of those actually writing messages in Japanese, J-Cast reports that popular Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son is number one, with 730 thousand followers, with former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama (670 thousand) and outspoken ex-Livedoor CEO Takafumi Horie (560 thousand) coming up next.

Of course, large numbers of followers does not necessarily indicate much about the growth of Twitter in general other than that a lot of users are interested in certain people. It reveals the personalities appealing to Twitter users but they are a very specific type of consumer, the people with iPhones and no doubt all the other latest gadgets.

Hatoyama, though, did make quite a breakthrough when, as a political leader, he entered actively into SNS and online communities. His successor, Naoto Kan, has also made some gestures here but Hatoyama’s digital model has yet to be matched. Since stepping down, sadly Hatoyama’s Twitter account has barely been active, suggesting he is reluctant to become an online commentator when his offline career has been officially shut down.

Verizon iPhone a blessing for AT&T customers?

If, as expected, some iPhone users jump from AT&T to Verizon if the Apple phone hits Verizon, it could free up faster network bandwidth for those who stay on AT&T.

Sony Ericsson names Xperia Arc CPU, dubs Android 2.4 appearance a ‘misconfiguration’

The Xperia Arc is one pretty slice of Gingerbread, don’t you think? We certainly did when we got the chance to handle one for ourselves at CES, but today we’re less concerned with its exterior and more interested in what lies beneath. The 1GHz processor we knew about already has been specified as a Qualcomm MSM8255 and will be joined in the good fight against sluggish performance by an Adreno 205 graphics chip. On the software front, that random sighting of an Arc with Android 2.4 has been put down as a simple “misconfiguration” by Sony Ericsson, exploding a million conspiracy theories around the web. One encouraging note here is that SE (kinda) acknowledges its inglorious record with Android updates and promises recent changes have put it in “a good position to make sure that Xperia Arc will get later versions in a timely manner.” We’ll believe it when you make it, Sony.
