Spectec CameraJet system promises to bring UWB connectivity to your camera

Not satisfied with an Eye-Fi card to add some wireless connectivity to your digital camera? Then it looks like you’ll soon have another option courtesy of Alereon and Spectec — they’ve just announced their Spectec CameraJet system, which consists of a Wi-Jet SD card and Wi-Jet USB dongle that combine to deliver a “faster than wire” Ultra Wideband (or UWB) connection suitable for both transferring files or streaming video. Unfortunately, there’s no indication of pricing or an exact release date just yet, but Alereon and Spectec say the system is expected to go into production in February. Full press release is after the break.

MiLi HD iPhone / iPad charging dock boasts internal speaker, HDMI output

MiLi Power — the same guys who pushed out the thinnest iPhone battery case earlier this year — are back in Las Vegas, but this introduction represents quite the deviation. The MiLi HD is fairly simplistic in nature, and we get the feeling that iPhone and iPad owners may actually appreciate the understated motif. Aside from being a fully-featured charging dock, this here device also includes an internal speaker, a mini-USB connector and an HDMI output to boot. The goal here is to pipe those iTunes downloads from your iDevice right onto your television sans an Apple TV, and if that’s exactly what you’ve been hunting for, you can seek it out shortly for $99.99.

DIY telepresence robot uses PrimeSense Kinect drivers for extremely awkward push-ups (video)

From enhancing your WoW game to putting you in Tom Hanks’s shoes, DIYers the world o’er really do seem to love Kinect. And what do we have here? Taylor Veltrop’s Veltrobot remote telepresence ‘bot uses the PrimeSense open source Kinect drivers for tracking the user’s skeleton, with a modified Kondo KHR-1HV mirroring the operator’s movements (which are received via 802.11n WiFi). Right now he is only controlling the arms, but with any luck we should be seeing complete control over all the robot’s movements soon enough. Once the thing is finalized, Veltrop plans on releasing an open source development kit. And then? That’s right: robot avatars for everyone!

eLocity announces seven 10-inch Android 3.0 tablets… before Android 3.0 is announced

Google and Motorola haven’t quite announced that Honeycomb tablet we’re expecting to see at CES in just a couple days, but that’s not stopping eLocity, makers of the A7 tablet pictured above — the company just announced no fewer than seven 10-inch Tegra 2 tablets running Android 3.0. Specs are pretty light, but we’re told the new A10 line will use the dual-core Tegra 2 T-250, have “high-resolution” multitouch screens, microSD storage, USB ports, a front-facing camera, and feature an HDMI port that supports 1080p output. So why seven 10-inch tablets with what seem to be the same basic specs? We have no idea — we’re sure to find out more when CES kicks off. PR after the break.

Toy smartphone jailbreak: top tech trend for 2011?

Not since we ran into Benign Girl at the Dollar General have we been so taken with a toy cellphone. Yours now for a mere 99 cents, Smart Phone (creative name!), proves what we suspected all along: in Shenzhen, even children’s playthings are jailbroken. But please be careful, as this thing is only recommended for users over the age of four. Get a closer look after the break.

[Thanks, Josh]

Toronto Mayor Reconsidering Plastic Bax Fee

Plastic Bag.jpg

Toronto was once now as a progressively green city, but under new mayor Rob Ford that appears to be changing. For the worse. Ford’s most recent move is to reconsider the five cent fee on plastic bags, which is aimed at curbing wastage and is being adopted by cities across the globe. Italy recently decided to ban plastic bags all together.

“All of a sudden the five cents is really becoming a sticking point with people and it wasn’t really before, so I want to get rid of it,” Ford told the National Post. “I’m going to change how it’s being implemented right now, put it that way. How we’re going to do it, I’m not quite sure, but we’re definitely going to review it. Because spending five cents and just putting it in the pocket of businesses doesn’t make any sense to me.”

But this seems to ignore the main point of the fee, which is to reduce waste, discouraging shoppers from using bags in the first place. Understandably, not everyone agrees with Ford. “We think anything that reduces plastic use is a good thing,” Franz Hartmann, executive director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance, said.

Paris May Ban SUVs And Other Gas Guzzlers

ParisStreets.jpg

In an attempt to reduce pollution, Paris is considering banning certain vehicles. Though details are still pretty slim, it seems likely that the restrictions will be placed on SUVs and old diesel vehicles. So what should Parisians who own one of these vehicles do?

“Sell it and buy a vehicle that’s compatible with city life,” environmental official Denis Baupin told RTL radio. “I’m sorry, but having a sport utility vehicle in a city makes no sense.”

The restrictions are expected to be put into place either this year or next, and will effect cities including Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence. City officials are still in the process of determining which cars will actually be restricted and what types of penalties will be used.
