Electric Garbage Trucks To Hit The Streets Of Paris In 2011

PVI electric garbage truck.jpg

Not too long ago we got news of the world’s first electric street sweeper, and now the world’s first electric garbage truck has come along.

The zero-emissions truck features battery system containing five strings of seven battery packs, provided by manufacturer Dow Kokam, which provides around 250 kilowatt hours of power. The truck can reach a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour, can collect nearly 16 tons of garbage, and, according to manufacturer PVI, will eliminate 130 tons of CO2 per truck per year.

“Today’s unveiling of our first fully electric refuse truck, arguably the largest electric truck on the market, is a great accomplishment in vehicle electrification because these trucks place unique and high demands on their operating systems due to specific designs for urban cleaning,” Michel Bouton, CEO of PVI, said.

“The ability to introduce a completely electric truck of this size that doesn’t sacrifice performance or power is due to PVI’s extensive history in vehicle electrification and the selection of Dow Kokam’s advanced lithium polymer battery technology, which provides ready solutions to meet the high performance needs of working trucks operating daily in urban environments.”

The first truck is expected to be deployed just outside of Paris early next year, with a fleet of 11 expected to be on the street by 2011’s end.

Free Gmail Calls for All of Next Year

gmail_voice_screenshot.png

Merry Christmas from Google. “In the spirit of holiday giving and to help people keep in touch in the new year,” the Web giant will be extending free Gmail-based Google Voice calling to the US and Canada by a full year. The promo, which was initially scheduled to terminate at the end of 2010, has been extended for the duration of 2011.

The company added Google Voice functionality to Gmail back in August, driving users to make more than one million calls in its first day. Making calls via the service is pretty straight forward–just click the Call Phone button located in the GChat window on the left side of your Gmail inbox and boom, free calls.

N-Trig teaches DuoSense to write on Android screens, tablet to come in the first half of 2011

This one isn’t much of a surprise — considering N-Trig told us just a few months ago that “the most useful Android slates will be pen-enabled” and that it was working on Android support — but today the Israel-based company has officially announced support for Google’s mobile operating system. What does that mean? On a technical level, it means that N-Trig’s DuoSense pen and capacitive multitouch solution, which is currently on tablets like the HP Slate and Dell Latitude XT, will work on top of Android slates. On a product end, it means that we’re going to start seeing an Android slate or two that takes advantage of pen in 2011. According to N-Trig’s VP of Marketing Gary Baum, one company is far along in developing an Android slate based on DuoSense and there are “several others that are coming along.” Baum wouldn’t give us any specifics on those companies, though he did tell us that we should see one product in the first half of the year, while the majority will be waiting for Honeycomb. We’re still crossing our fingers for Honeycomb in the first part of 2011, so we don’t want to read into that too much, but he also stressed that third-party software developers are working on applications that take advantage of pen and that some of them may be previewed at CES. We’ll be digging as much as we can into what company’s pairing pen with Android, but until then, we leave you with the full press release after the break.

Use the Sony GPS-CS1 to Keep Track of your Photos

This article was written on March 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you take a lot of pictures (or you’re gettin’ old and your memory just doesn’t work like it used to), it can be difficult to remember where all of your photos were taken. This is where the Sony GPS-CS1 comes into play because it does all of the work for you.

Sonypgs

The GPS unit records the date, time, and location and makes a log of this information every 15 seconds. To make it even easier on you, it comes with Sony’s Picture Motion Browser Software that matches the dates on the photos with the information off of the GPS unit. You really can’t get any easier than that.Another feature allows you to tag your images on a Google map so that you can keep track of where your photos were taken visually.

As mentioned, it will record your location in a log every 15 seconds, and can hold 360 hours of data.  If you’re using AA alkaline batteries the device will give you 10 hours of continuous use, or 14 hours of use with Ni-MH batteries. It easily connects to your computer via USB 2.0.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you’d need to make sure that the date on your camera is correct so that the software is able to match the photos by date with the information that it logged from the GPS unit.

So, if you’re memory just isn’t what it used to be, or you go camera crazy and snap photos all too often, the Sony GPS-CS1 just might be worth the $149!

2010’s Weirdest Tech Stories: Part One

Thumbnail image for steve_jobs_figure.jpg

It’s been a weird year in the tech world. We kicked things off with the on-going Crunchpad/JooJoo saga, Google had a surprising number of misfires (including Buzz and Wave), some of Hollywood’s finest released a movie based on the life of a social network CEO, and Julian Assange leaked the entire world’s dirty laundry.

In fact, when I asked my coworkers at PCMag to help me come up with some of the weirdest stories of the year, I received too many responses to fit into a single post. So, in honor of the weird year that was, I present the first of a two-part roundup of some of the strangest tech stories we followed this calendar year.

Mysterious Sony VAIO tablet PC drops by the FCC

Well, would you look at what we found lounging around the FCC — it’s a Sony tablet PC, alright, but the problem is we just don’t know much more than that. Filed just today and submitted by a VAIO Business Group representative, the elusive tablet seems to be WiFi-only with 802.11b/g plus single band n, and it’s likely to come in a few different flavors as there are a few confusing model numbers listed. Do PCG-31211L, PCG-31311L, PCG-312xxL (where ‘x’ can be any given number or letter) mean anything to you? Unfortunately, that’s really all we can glean from the documents — beyond the label you’re peering at above, Sony has managed to keep the external photos, user manual, and test setup pics confidential until January 20th. Of course, that has us thinking that it might show its touchscreen self at CES, which means until then, we’ll be dreaming up magical specs and features for this thing. Care to partake in that wonderful pastime? Dream big in the comments.

Update: We just heard from a proven Sony source of ours who claims that this is actually a mismarked Sony VAIO Y series laptop and that there won’t be a VAIO tablet unveil at CES. Doesn’t sound too promising, but there’s no telling what will actually go down in Vegas…

Clamcase iPad keyboard case / stand now on sale, ships January 2011

Surely you haven’t forgotten about Clamcase! Merely 14 hours after Apple introduced the iPad, someone on Clamcase’s staff filed a patent application for the device you’re peering at above. Between then and now, a smattering of iPad keyboard cases have come to light, but quite a few folks have apparently been waiting for the original to materialize. This week, the company opened up the pre-order hotline for the device, hawking it for the not-exactly-bargain-bin price of $119. It’s available in any color you want, so long as it’s black, and if all goes well it’ll hit the shipping docks next month. It’s definitely the nicest of the bunch based on pictures alone, and it’s not like it’ll have to try awfully hard to beat the rivals that have already let us down. So, what’s it going to be? You in for one?

Update: Thanks to a snazzy gift card, it’s just $99 for a limited time.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

BBC comedians ridicule tech naming schemes, make us laugh along the way (video)

They say all good comedy has a modicum of truth to it, and there’s no denying that the jargon that’s built up around technology is littered with opportunity for mockery, fun-poking, and general satire. Leave it to two old pros from the UK, then, Harry Enfield and Ronnie Corbett, to summarily dispatch Apple, BlackBerry, Orange, Microsoft and everyone in between in one of the better tech-related sketches we’ve seen. See them do their thing after the break, but be warned: the video contains (a lot) more than your recommended daily allowance of fruit puns.

[Thanks, Thanasis]
