USB typewriter goes ‘clackity clackity clack DING’ (video)

USB typewriter goes 'clackity clackity clack *DING*'

You can keep your Optimus and Das Keyboard clickers: nothing compares to the pure, physical, carpal tunnel-inducing feel of a manual typewriter. If you want to bring that feel to your new-age gadget, Jack Zylkin can deliver it, able to convert your Royal Standard to USB standard, and plenty of other brands too. The system works by having the keys strike a board and create a circuit which is then piped out of a ubiquitous A-Type connector. A DIY kit will set you back $75 and at least a couple hours of your time (maybe more), while a ready-to-click pre-assembled model costs between $400 and $500. Given the intricate nature of the install we’d say that’s probably the better bet — unless you’re particularly attached to your old manual. Video demonstration after the break.

AirStash Wireless SD Card Reader: Perfect iPad Companion?

The AirStash is a USB card reader combined with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Its purpose in life is to stream media to other devices, which means sending movies, music and video to phones, tablets and other memory-limited gadgets.

We first saw the AirStash back in January when a prototype was shown at CES. Since then it has gotten a price ($100) and gone on sale. You might also remember that, in the meantime, Apple released a new kind of computer.

Now, the AirStash won’t help you if you are desperately waiting for the sold-out Apple Camera Connection Kit (the AirStash is similarly back-ordered), but it could be ideal for iPad-toting photographers who hate plugging things in. You just pop your SD card into the slot and then dial in from Safari. From there you can browse a list of photos, view them and save them to your photo-roll. Better, it works as a mass-storage USB device, so you could actually plug it into the iPad via the connection kit.

The only problem is that the transfer is a little clunky: there’s no way to grab all the images at once. What may work, though, is using an iPad app called ShutterSnitch (also covered in Gadget Lab, this time in May). ShutterSnitch has its own FTP server, and normally pulls in images as you take them from an Eye-Fi card or a wireless transmitter. In theory, you should be able to combine the two for some fast wireless transfers (or fast-ish: the AirStash has a 802.11b/g radio).

It’s still a little awkward. The AirStash folks really need to write an App that pulls from their dongle to make things a little easier. Otherwise, this looks like a neat photographers’ toy.

TwistDock is the PS3 dock for M. Night Shyamalan fans

Looking for a dock… with a twist? Frankly we weren’t either, but that didn’t stop us from being intrigued by the aptly titled TwistDock for the PS3 from Vogel’s, a docking station for a console that we didn’t think needed one. On the front the TwistDock houses a PS3, either original or Slim, and on the back (here comes the twist) two controllers can be slotted in and charged, shown after the break. There’s also a USB hub for connecting other goods and overall it pledges to keep your layout “clean, stylish and sexy.” That would be lovely progression from our current entertainment center’s “dusty, cluttered and tangly” label. Can it deliver? It’s on display at this year’s E3, and we’ll go see for ourselves.

Microsoft Kinect to go on sale in November, somewhere

What you’re looking at is the latest status update to the Xbox MySpace page showing a November release for Microsoft Natal Kinect. You know, just in case you were looking for something to puchase in the run up to the holidays. How much is the big question now.

Update: John was kind enough to ping us and let us know about this mention of a November release date on a UK Microsoft press page, which we also have a picture of below. This would seem to imply it’ll also be hitting Europe before the end of the year, but we’ll find out when the timer on that page hits zero and Microsoft’s second big event of the show kicks off. We’ll be there.

[Thanks, Bharat R.]

Samsung’s 7-inch ‘Galaxy Tape’ to run Android 2.2 on 1.2GHz A8 processor?

More details about Samsung’s new tablet have emerged courtesy of Tinh te and from what it claims is a highly reliable source. This time around, the Vietnamese site is claiming that Samsung’s 7-inch Tab will be running Anroid 2.2 (Froyo) on an A8 processor clocked to a peppy 1.2GHz. It’s all powered by a 4,000mAH battery that contributes to the tablet’s 370-gram weight with 16GB of on-board storage and up to 32GB of microSD expansion. Oh, and the 7-inch panel is said to be of Samsung’s Super AMOLED variety which should make it readable outdoors judging by its smaller sibs. Sounds hot, but we’ll have to see how Samsung’s TouchWiz UI holds up to being stretched across all that very expensive screen-estate.

P.S. We’ve also been told that it’ll be called the “Galaxy Tape,” not Tab or S-Tab as previously rumored.

Dell Streak car and AV docks now on sale, HDMI may or may not be included

Hey England, in need of some retail therapy after an unsatisfying sporting weekend? Dell’s got the goods for you with a rich new selection of cables, plugs, adapters, and cases for your new Streak. It looks like the HDMI dock we’ve been jonesing for has probably become a retail reality, but there’s no way to be sure right now — Dell’s only listing an AV dock without going into the TV connectivity options. The fresh offerings also include the kickstand-equipped wallet case that we found intriguing, spare battery and sync cables, and an international travel kit. Of course, every silver lining has a cloud, which in this case is the pricing: nothing here costs less than £24 ($35) and the car- and TV-enabling docks will set you back a cool £55 ($80) each. Jumbo smartphone, jumbo accessory prices.

[Thanks, Kingsley]

Samsung Galaxy S gets torn down, looks equally beautiful on the inside (video)

You’ll be hard pressed to find a sane individual who’d argue that Samsung’s Galaxy S isn’t a lust-worthy piece of kit on the outside, and after watching the video past the break, we doubt you’ll get too many takers on proving things unsightly within. Equipped with a Super AMOLED display and a bit of that Hummingbird goodness within, there weren’t too many bits and pieces to tear apart. What was found, however, leaves a new appreciation for steady hands. Go on, give it a look-see — the real deal will be out and about before you know it.

E3 2010: Microsoft Rechristens Project Natal Kinect

Microsoft's Kinect Game Control System

Tonight Microsoft’s Natal graduated from “Project” to product. The controller-free Xbox 360 game system has an official name, Kinect, and a slew of gaming scenarios to use it in. The evening’s eye-popping Cirque du Soleil-infused event, which kicked off the E3 conference in Los Angeles, was short on details but long on eye candy.

Microsoft used the spectacle, held before thousands in USC’s Galen Center, to demonstrate the myriad ways you’ll use the Kinect system. There were scenarios we’ve seen before–like driving and exercise–and other we hadn’t. Performers sat in an elevated living room set (which rotated 360 degrees) and interacted with a virtual tiger, competed in track and field, learned dance moves and even battled Darth Vader. For the latter demonstration, the performer wielded a virtual light saber and used “force” style moves.

Microsoft will officially announced Kinect during tomorrow morning’s press conference (10:30 AM PST, 6-14-10), at which time we should learn pricing availability and game details.

Microsoft largely banned cellphones, cameras and virtually every other kind of electronic device from the event, so my photos and video are sketchy, at best.

Nokia N9 MeeGo slider leaks in early video tease?

Um, yeah. Let’s just put this out there: the image above was grabbed from a video that could be an early, leaked teaser for the N9, Nokia’s first handset to run the MeeGo OS. Could be. The production quality of the promo is certainly up to snuff and the industrial design of the slider itself features just enough N8 to make the whole thing seem very plausible. It doesn’t hurt that it resembles an earlier leak… but that doesn’t help authenticate it as real either. And what’s with those impossibly shallow keys on the QWERTY? Watch for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Tigran]

Microsoft Kinect Up Close: So Shiny [Xbox 360]

Backstage at the Fern Gully acid trip spectacle that was Microsoft Kinect’s (nee Project Natal) coming out party, we got to see Kinect up close. It’s elongated black and shiny plastic, like a PS3 accessory. Take a look. More »
