Samsung Galaxy Tab revealed

If only there were more tablets in the world, you know? Samsung has heard the call, and truth be told they might have a nice crack at creating something desirable. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab (previously referred to as the S-Pad), runs Android with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top (similar to the Galaxy S sitting next to it). According to the Tweets by Samsung Blog South Africa — an odd place indeed to make this sort of unveiling — it has a “high resolution” screen, and it’s supposed to be AMOLED if an earlier leak on the “S-Pad” is to be believed. That S-Pad info also mentioned a Samsung Apps store, which would make sense because as far as we know Google isn’t letting “official” Android Market-equipped, Google-blessed tablets out of the gate just yet.

Chevy, OnStar to Train Emergency First Responders on EVs

2011_Chevy_Volt.jpg
Chevrolet and OnStar, along with the International Association of Fire Fighters and several related emergency organizations, have announced a new training program designed to educate first responders on how to deal with electric vehicles.
Training sessions will feature the upcoming Chevy Volt, and will begin in Chicago in late August, with first-responder sessions in other major cities to follow immediately thereafter. Volt displays will also appear at various emergency industry conferences beginning in June.
The training will include animations and illustrations of the Volt, showing cut points for extrication, first-responder labeling, automatic and manual electric shut-offs, and other features crucial to a proper emergency response.
“Technological changes in the automotive industry require changes in fire and emergency service operations as well,” said Chief Jack Parow, first vice president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, in a statement. “The IAFC is proud to work with Chevrolet and OnStar to ensure that fire responders are adequately trained in how to work with the new technology, both for their own safety and the safety of those they serve.”

IPad Camera Connection Kit Sells for $187.50 on Ebay

Desperate to get ahold of the back-ordered iPad Camera Connection Kit (current waiting time 3-4 weeks)? Willing to spend almost $200 to have one sooner? Nah, of course not, but you’re a smart Gadget Lab reader. Not a bit like the dunce who bought the “autentic” two-piece USB kit on Ebay for $187.50, (winning bid pictured above).

That high price is an exceptional one, but the kit, which lets you connect cameras and SD cards to the iPad (as well as some keyboards and sound devices) is going for around $70 on the auction site, and they seem to be selling.

I have mine on pre-order from Apple, and I’m happy to wait. I might have paid a fortune to get my iPad shipped in from the US a couple of weeks early, but even I’m not dumb enough to drop the price of a point and shoot camera on a simple card reader. But hey, if you really need one, at least that $187.50 comes with free shipping.

Inventec’s Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop

Inventec's Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop

It may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a “Marvell 624,” which we’re guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it’s currently running 1.6, word is that it’ll be dipped in 2.1’s creamy filling in the near future. When will delivery be? Inventec has been showing this guy off since last year, and while the person doing the demonstration indicates they’ll be available “pretty soon” at a price point around $400, we found this guy for sale already at a price of 2688 yuan, or about $395. So, if you’re eager to get computing and prefer donuts to eclairs, we wish you happy importing.

Nokia Unleashes E73 Smartphone on T-Mobile

Nokia_E73.jpg

Nokia has unveiled the E73, an update to its beloved QWERTY-equipped E72 slab smartphone–this time, with an exclusive T-Mobile subsidy.
The ultra-slim, Symbian-powered E73 measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.5 ounces. It features a 5-megapixel camera with VGA video recording, an optical control pad, free Ovi Maps GPS navigation, and access to Nokia’s Ovi Store for downloading thousands of third-party apps.
The E73 also includes a 2.4-inch QVGA screen–would have been nice to see a resolution upgrade there, but we can’t have everything–along with a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack.
The E73 supports Wi-Fi with T-Mobile calling, and comes with an HTML Web browser with Adobe Flash support–unlike the iPad. Look for the E73 to hit T-Mobile stores and the carrier’s online site June 16th.

Super Is the Ultimate Video Converter

Super Video Converter

Every now and then I have to convert a video from one file format to another and it is a pain to find the software to do it…especially free software! That is where Super comes into play. It can handle a huge variety of video formats and can convert them to nearly anything you would want! Here are a few of the converters that it comes with:

  • Mobile phone converter
  • PocketPC converter
  • iPod converter
  • PSP converter
  • VCD converter
  • SVCD converter
  • DVD converter
  • AVI converter
  • MP4 converter
  • MOV converter
  • ASF converter
  • FLV converter
  • MPG converter
  • OGG converter
  • WMV converter
  • GIF converter

The list is actually even longer but those are probably some of the most common ones that people will use. On top of being able to convert videos it can also play/save Internet Media Streams (such as mms://, rtsp://, and http://) without any problems!

So even if you don’t plan on using this program right now I still suggest that you bookmark it, because when you do need it you won’t be able to find it! :)

Update:
There seems to be some problems downloading directly from the site so you might want to try downloading from MajorGeeks. Just select one of the mirrors that they provide.

‘Cut My Sim’ Automates Tedious SIM-Trimming

If hand-cutting your own microSIM is a little bit too folksy for you, or if you own a back-street cellphone store and find yourself chopping up other people’s SIMs to fit into their iPads, then Henk van Ess’s Cut My Sim might be just the thing.

Instead of scissors or a straight-edge and an X-Acto knife, you just slip your SIM into what looks like a cross between a stapler and a hole-punch and push the lever. The stainless steel jaws clamp shut and strip away the excess plastic surrounding the chip, spitting out a perfectly iPad-ready microSIM.

This may be a little redundant now that carriers in all the countries where the iPad is officially available will just give or sell you the proper card, but that doesn’t make this any less useful for those wishing to hijack a non-iPad data plan or just use a non-supported telco. At the very least you’ll have a nice, retro-style paperweight for your desk.

The Cut My Sim costs $25 and will ship at the end of June. That price includes a plastic tray, called Back to Normal which will let you return it to its former size. Shipping later this month.
