Acer ‘Liquid Stream’ S110 scores FCC approval: Android, 720p video recording
Posted in: Android, Today's ChiliSo a new Android-powered handset from Acer popped up at IO last week — the so-called “Liquid Stream,” which would presumably succeed the Liquid and Liquid e in Acer’s lineup. AndroidGuys is reporting that the phone is currently running Android 2.1 (which we’d hope would morph into 2.2 by release) paired with a Snapdragon core and a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video capture, so it’s the “5.0 Megapixel HD 720p” inscription on the back of the diagram in this FCC filing for a phone called the Acer S110 (along with the obvious similarity in shape) that’s allowing us to deduce that these two bad boys are one and the same. Android France has it pegged for October — and it’s got 850 / 1900MHz HSPA, so we could theoretically see a few land in North America by the time this all shakes out. Who’s interested?

Starting Tuesday, Wal-Mart is knocking the price of the 16GB iPhone 3GS to its lowest price offer yet: $97.
That’s a savings of $100 when the iPhone is purchased new with a two-year contract. Not only is that the lowest price that Wal-Mart has offered, but it’s the lowest price on the handset in the U.S.
The 32GB version is still $297. Apple sells the 8GB version for $99, but it’s not currently available through Apple’s online store. This deal is only available in Wal-Mart stores and not online.
PCMag gave the iPhone 3GS a 4.5 out of 5 rating and an Editors’ Choice award. Read the Apple iPhone 3GS review for more information.

Microsoft’s Robbie Bach and J Allard leaving as part of broader shakeup; Xbox and Windows Phone teams now reporting directly to Ballmer
Posted in: breaking news, BreakingNews, Microsoft, steve ballmer, Today's Chili, Windows, windows phone, WindowsPhone, xbox, xbox 360, Xbox360Well, it looks like the rumors were true. Not only is Microsoft’s J Allard now officially leaving the company, but so is Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, amid what’s described as a broader restructuring that will effectively dissolve the division and give CEO Steve Ballmer more direct oversight of Microsoft’s consumer initiatives like Xbox and Windows Phone as of July.
Contrary to earlier reports, Allard says that he’s not leaving due to the cancellation of the Courier, but instead says that after nineteen years with the company, he simply wants to devote more time to his personal interests, “particularly adventure sports.” Allard also insists that he won’t be moving on to Apple, Google or any other Microsoft rivals — in fact, he’s staying on as an advisor to Steve Ballmer. Robbie Bach’s departure is equally curious — despite being just 48, his move is being described as a “retirement,” and he says that the decision was his own and that he wasn’t encouraged to leave. He’ll also apparently remain with Microsoft through the fall to aid in the transition.
When all’s said and done, mobile communications VP Andy Lees and interactive entertainment head Don Mettrick will each separately report to Ballmer — both have headed their divisions for some time now, so we’d assume that things will otherwise proceed as planned. Still, the loss of talent at the top is certainly noticeable — we’ll see how Microsoft responds now that Ballmer is firmly driving its mobile and gaming efforts.
We’ve got Ballmer’s full letter to the company and Microsoft’s official PR after the break, so take a peek.
Update: Mary Jo Foley has J Allard’s parting email to his employees.

Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 now on sale, offers less value for more money
Posted in: lenovo, Today's ChiliIf you set your heart on the sexy, swiveling Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 desktop when you saw it at CES, the time has come to lay down your cash — the all-in-one PC is now available for order. It’s kind of a shame that it’ll take eighteen days to arrive on your doorstep after you write the check, and we’re not terribly jazzed that there are only two last-gen Core 2 Duo Mobile configurations on offer for hundreds of dollars more than Lenovo originally promised, but hey — form over function, right? Just make sure you opt for the $950 version if you plan to watch any LOST reruns on the glossy 21.5-inch screen, as Lenovo no longer includes a TV tuner in the base model. Yeah, what with the company calling it a “hi-def TV” and all, we’re as surprised by that omission as you.

Google has released its next version of the popular Toolbar for Firefox. This is Google Toolbar 2 and has some new features that are important to many users. One of the most important features (in my opinion) is the addition of the Google Safe Browsing Extension right into this new toolbar. The Google Safe Browsing protects users from phishing sites (sites that pretend to be someone, like PayPal, in order to gain access to your account).

Of course, they didn’t stop there. They also threw in search features and now when you start to type a search it will show you some popular results (even spelling corrections)!

Google Toolbar 2 will also manage your RSS subscriptions. To make it easy they designed it so that the toolbar will automatically recognize when a feed is on the page you are viewing, and will then let you subscribe to the feed if you so choose to. This was an inevitable addition because RSS feeds are redesigning the way the world receives news, and it needs to be simple for users to subscribe to the news.

If you have the GMail Notifier installed just so that you can use GMail as your default client then you no longer need the Notifier. There is now a feature in the toolbar to let users set GMail as their default email client instead of having the pesky Outlook Express pop-up every time you want to send a quick email.

Lastly, you can now choose how you want to view the Google Toolbar in Firefox. You can have it display the complete toolbar as it normally has in the past or you can have it replace the compact Google search box located in the upper-right corner of Firefox. This is great for those users who try to make everything as compact as they can to increase their screen space.
