Samsung’s Droid Charge spotted in leaked promo material, multimedia dock in tow

Like it or not, it’s a Big Red kind of day. The latest VZW news to splash down in our inbox is the shot you see above — the first hint of promotional material surrounding Samsung’s Droid Charge. If you’ll recall, this phone began its (public) life at CES 2011 sans a name, but as a source correctly predicted, the name shown above will be the one that sticks. Proving that the Atrix 4G setup was more than just a fluke, Sammy’s also showcasing a must-have peripheral: the multimedia desktop dock. Said accessory ships with a built-in battery charger and spare cell, but with no apparent signs of a video output, we’re having a hard time getting too hot and bothered.

Sprint launches Novatel MiFi 3G / 4G mobile hotspot

This one’s been floating around since way back in December, but Novatel’s new 3G / 4G MiFi has is now finally available from Sprint — albeit only via direct ship, Sprint retail channels will get it on April 17th. It will run you $79.99 on a two-year contract, and comes packing Novatel’s rather novel MiFi OS, which is actually a stripped-down version of LInux that lets you take advantage of various widgets and applications. It’s also GPS enabled, and has a microSD card slot that allows for up to 32GB of shared storage. Full press release is after the break, and you can check out a few early reviews of the device at the more coverage links below.

Sprint EVO View 4G tablet to launch with Honeycomb, Flyer can’t be far behind (update: maybe not)

Sprint EVO View 4G tablet to launch with Honeycomb, Flyer can't be far behind

If you want a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 tablet with 1.5GHz and dual cameras, you want an HTC Flyer. If, however, you want that with WiMAX data and a talk show name, you’ll want Sprint’s special flavor, the EVO View 4G. At CTIA we were told that it was, of course, Android, but now Sprint’s confirming that it’ll come right out the door with Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb. That’s the tablet taste that makes everybody come a runnin’, and that this sucker will have it at launch (sometime “this summer”) might just be good news for those pining for the WiFi-only Flyer, which as of last report would not be getting its own sweet taste until sometime after launch.

[Thanks, Leo Z]

Update: Well, that didn’t last long. Sprint has now tweaked the page to simply read the “latest version of Android,” and a spokesman tells Android Central that while the “plan is to offer Honeycomb,” it’s still “too early to determine whether or not Honeycomb will be available at launch.”

Looking to save a bit of battery life on your Thunderbolt by dialing down those crazy LTE speeds from time to time? Then you now have a relatively easy way to do so courtesy of the new LTE OnOff app that’s just hit the Android Market. That’s apparently similar to a few other options available, but this one’s free, and it will let you switch from LTE to 3G only with just three taps. Sound good? Hit up the link below to download it straight to your Thunderbolt.

Report: Samsung Nexus S 4G to Ship on April 6

Samsung’s Nexus S 4G will begin shipping from Best Buy stores this week. Outwardly, it will be identical to the 3G version of the Nexus S shown here. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

The Sprint 4G version of Samsung’s Nexus S Android smartphone is scheduled to ship this week from Best Buy stores, according to a report published Monday morning.

Sightings of an April 6 shipping date have been spotted on Best Buy’s web site on Monday morning by Mobileburn. The ship date has since been changed back to “coming soon” on the retailer’s site, and a spokesperson for Sprint refused to confirm any release details other than “the spring.”

The 3G version of the Nexus S first debuted for T-Mobile’s network in December to much ado, as it featured Google’s most current version of Android at the time, 2.3 (Gingerbread). The hardware specs on both T-Mobile’s 3G and Sprint’s 4G versions are identical — 1-Ghz Hummingbird processor, 4-inch super AMOLED screen, 16 GB of flash memory and the heavily-hyped near field communication (NFC) capability — but of course, only the 4G version will have access to Sprint’s 4G network.

This version of the Nexus S will run on Sprint’s WiMax 4G network, and will cost $200 with a two-year contract and Sprint’s “Everything Data” subscription plan. The phone is currently available for pre-order at Best Buy stores only.

IEEE approves next generation WiMAX standard, invites you to meet 802.16m

It’s a term (and a technology) that has been bandied about for around four years now, but after waiting far too long for the next next best thing, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has just given its oh-so-coveted stamp of approval to 802.16m. For those unfamiliar with such a term, that’s the standard for next generation WiMAX, which may end up being capable of handling downstream rates of over 300Mbps. ‘Course, those that were around during CEATEC last year know that Samsung already hit that in testing, but we’re starting to feel as if that 1Gbps theoretical maximum that we were teased with in 2007 (and again last year) won’t ever breach reality. It’s tough to say what this approval means on the consumer front — over the past four years, a tremendous amount of carriers have switched their allegiance to LTE, and even if WiMAX 2.0 finds itself ready for public consumption in the near future, it’ll take a serious operator commitment before you’ll ever enjoy the spoils. So Sprint, you feeling froggy?

RadioShack to get T-Mobile Sidekick 4G on April 20th

While T-Mobile’s staying coy about the Sidekick 4G’s availability, RadioShack went ahead and gave us the final piece of the puzzle: according to one of its latest tweets, said Android phone is heading to the Shack on April 20th. Oh yes, this just so happens to be the rumored date for the G-Slate and G2X as well. Coincidence? Only time will tell, and let’s hope that this doesn’t end up being an April Fool’s joke — well, at least the Shack would have something to blame if it actually misheard the information over the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S getting a 1.4GHz ‘2011 edition’ next month (update: confirmed)

You didn’t think Samsung was going to leave the classic Galaxy S handset in the past, did you? Dmitriy Ryabinin of hi-tech.mail.ru has tracked down the above comparison sheet showing off a new variant of the 4-inch Android phone, this time packing a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T chip and a 14.4Mbps HSPA+ radio. Other than those upgrades and a 1650mAh battery, it’s a faithful reproduction of last year’s original and should be arriving in Russia around the end of April for a price of just under 24,000 rubles ($846). What gives us faith in this apparent leak is our earlier sighting of a 3.7-inch Galaxy S2 “Mini” device from Samsung, which also clocks in at a mighty 1.4GHz. Coincidence? We doubt it.

[Thanks, Andy]

Update: That was quick. Samsung’s Russian mouthpiece has confirmed all of the above, adding note of a metal back cover and a Galaxy S Plus name for markets outside of Russia. Sadly, there’s no word as to where else it might be showing up.

Best Buy Connect takes the 4G leap, now stocking over 20 WiMAX products

Took ’em long enough! Nearly a full year has elapsed between the time that Best Buy announced that its ‘Connect‘ program would support 4G and the time that it actually started stocked 4G gear. In fact, the company actually took the time to sign up for LightSquared’s wholesale LTE service a full week prior to making good on its commitment to Clearwire, which may or may not say anything about the future viability of WiMAX. At any rate, those who’d prefer to sift through mounds of peripherals (and be hounded at the exit by employees attempting to hawk product protection plans) in order to buy their 4G service can now do just that. BB Connect stores in the US will offer unlimited 4G service for $45 per month with a month-to-month or two-year contract, and if you choose the latter, the $35 activation fee will be waived and a hardware subsidy (“up to $150”) will be yours. So, you digging in, or feeling the tug of Long-Term Evolution?

AT&T’s Fake 4G Phones May Actually Get Real 4G Soon [At&t]

It’s been well documented that AT&T’s 4G phones aren’t just slow—their upload speeds are often slower than its 3G network. So what happened to that extra G? Turns out it’s not the network itself that’s borked; it’s the phones. AT&T has intentionally crippled the Motorola Atrix and HTC Inspire—the carrier’s only fourth-gen network phones—by actively disabling the handsets’ HSUPA capability. Gross. But there may be sweet relief coming soon. More »
