Amazon Kindle slimming down in August?

Color might still be out of the question — both now and far into the future — but Amazon seems fit to take out some of the Kindle‘s fat. Bloomberg has it on word that the company will debut a thinner version of its e-book reader in August, and the new workout regiment will also enhance its screen sharpness and responsiveness. No word on if this’ll apply to current models or be an entirely different variant, but in addition to no color, we do hear it lacks a touch screen. Bummer, but if the price is right, we’ll bite.

DoJ making preliminary inquiries into Apple’s music endeavors while iTunes dominance continues

It’s all just noise right now, but the United States Justice Department is purportedly having a “very preliminary conversation” with Apple regarding the company’s music business, wondering in particular if anything it’s doing (or has done) would violate antitrust legislation. According to unnamed sources familiar with the situation, DoJ staff seem most interested in whether or not Apple’s dominance in the market enabled it to unfairly prevent Amazon’s music service from exclusively debuting new songs. Beyond that, details of the investigation are few and far between, but it’s coincidentally coming down on Cupertino when its iTunes numbers are on the up and up. The latest NPD research figures show that over a quarter of the music purchased within the US is now procured through iTunes — 28 percent, if you’re looking for specifics, which is up 4 percentage points from Q1 2009. Meanwhile, Amazon has pulled into a tie with Walmart for second place, which may or may not coerce Wally World to ditch its morals and finally start stocking that uncensored version of My World 2.0.

Bezos: Kindle Color Display Not Coming Soon

Jeff Bezos.jpgHolding out for a full-color Amazon Kindle? Don’t hold your breath. In spite of competitive pressure from the Apple iPad and Pandigital’s recently announced Novel eReader, Amazon’s founder and CEO Jeff Bezos admitted to a meeting of shareholders that color Kindles are “still a long way out.”

According to Bezos, Amazon is indeed looking into a color screen update. The company has prototypes “in the laboratory that are ‘not ready for prime-time production.'” Bezos chalks up the dependence on black and white to the limitations of electronic ink, a technology that Amazon is seemingly not ready to abandon any time soon.

The Apple iPad, of course, relies on an LCD display. While the company has managed to give the iPad an estimated 10 hours of battery life (which, admittedly is nowhere near the several days the Kindle can get on a single charge), the iPad’s display makes for poor reading in natural lighting.

E-Ink Shocker! Amazon CEO says color Kindle is ‘still a long way out’

Well, if it isn’t a surprise to end all surprises. Amazon’s head honcho Jeff Bezos recently grabbed a mic at the outfit’s annual shareholder meeting in Seattle, and when speaking about the “millions” of Kindle e-readers that he’s sold, he pointed out the obvious when questioned about the possibility of a color version. In addressing concerns that LCD-based tablets may seem more attractive due to their ability to showcase color images and video, he noted that developing color electronic ink remains a challenge, and while he’s seen things “in the laboratory,” the prototypes are simply “not ready for prime-time production.” He also stated that these lust-worthy, mythical displays were “a long way out,” but that the Kindle would remain focused as a dedicated e-reader moving forward. Hear that, Mirasol? That’s the ear-piecing sound of a market opportunity waiting to be exploited.

Amazon’s Kindle 2.5 software update begins to roll out

We knew it was destined for a late-May release, and it looks as if Amazon’s going to make its deadline after all. Following a preview of the 2.5 software update a few weeks back, we’ve got pictorial proof that the new code is being pushed out as we speak. This particular unit is a Kindle DX, and it’s not hesitant in showing off the social networking features we were promised. Feel free to poke around in the gallery below, and then fire up your own Kindle to see if you’ve received an OTA surprise. Let us know either way in comments below, won’tcha?

[Thanks, Andreas]

ASUS and Amazon team up to pre-install Kindle for PC on netbooks and laptops

ASUS sells tons of laptops through Amazon.com. Amazon happens to offer a Kindle for PC application. Heck, why not team up and pre-install the app on the ASUS netbooks and laptops that are sold through the online e-tailer? Sure makes a lot of sense to us, and apparently it did to both Amazon and ASUS. Starting today, select laptops — including the Eee PC 1005PE and UL30 — will be sold with the e-book app loaded up. Frankly, we’re not the biggest fans of pre-installed software cluttering up fresh screens, but this sort of partnership surely makes sense with certain devices — in particular, convertible tablets that you’d use to read. You know what would also make sense? ASUS preloading some sort of Amazon application on its Eee Pad. That’s just us playing make believe, but it seems like the two companies are certainly talking. We’re set on getting our fill of ASUS tablet news at Computex next week, but in the meantime hit the break for the full Amazon / ASUS PR.

Nokia N8 launching August 24, we hear; Amazon Germany taking €470 pre-orders

We know, we know, you were banking on taking an N8 with you when you go summering in Cape Cod in July, but that might be a tall order because we’re hearing from a trusted source that August 24 has been pegged as the big release date for Nokia’s Symbian^3-powered beast. Pricing had already been announced at €370 ($465), but if you’re interested in shedding an extra hundred for no apparent reason, Amazon Germany is now officially taking pre-orders for €469.50 ($590) in black — just one of the five N8 shades Espoo will be pushing around the world. We think we’d recommend holding off on signing up for Amazon’s enticing deal here, quite honestly — especially considering the magnetic attraction we’ve got to that totally unapologetic orange version.

[Thanks, Al]

Kindle for Android coming this summer

What was hinted at in those leaked Dell Streak flyers is now official: Kindle for Android. Unfortunately, it’s not quite ready to download. Amazon’s free Kindle ebook reader — already out for Mac, PC, BlackBerry, and iDevices — won’t launch until later this summer. When it does, users of Android 1.6 and above (with SD card) will have the ability to search, browse, and purchase (without exiting the app) any of the half million books in the Kindle Store. Like the other apps, Kindle for Android features Whispersync to keep your bookmarks, last page read, notes, and highlights synchronized across all your Kindle-enabled devices. Expect to see this demonstrated at Google I/O starting tomorrow.

LinnStrument multitouch music maker gets demoed on video, grasps for investors

Roger Linn. Ever heard of him? He’s only the man behind the modern day drum machine and the original MPC-60, and he’s also the man behind the concept you’re inevitably peering at above. For now, Roger’s calling this beaut the LinnStrument, and there’s quite a back story to go along with it. The design began way back in 2006, with the goal being to create a full-on multitouch instrument with the ability to let one’s finger dictate volume, timbre, pitch and pressure. No doubt, many have tried to concoct something similar, but Roger’s discovery of TouchCo enabled him to create one sans the limitations of imitators. Unfortunately, Amazon quietly scooped up the startup in January of this year (to have this sort of technology available for the Kindle product line), and in turn, shut down TouchCo’s involvement with the outside world. Now, Roger’s being forced to reveal his unfinished work in hopes of attracting investors or unearthing another company that could mimic this sort of awesomeness en masse. Jump on past the break and mash play to get a better idea of what the world’s missing out on, and be sure to tell Jeff Bezos “thanks” the next time you bump into him.

[Thanks, Peter]
