New York Hotel Offering iPad in Every Room

plaza_hotel_new york.jpg

New York City’s ritzy Plaza Hotel is upping the ante of luxury (read: not having to leave your bed, ever) with the addition of Apple iPads to every room. The gadgets come loaded with Intelity’s ICE (Interactive Customer Experience), which will let guests order room service, talk to the concierge, schedule wakeup calls, make reservations at restaurants, get info on New York destinations, and check airline information. The iPad can also be used to control the room’s lights and temperature.

The Plaza insists that the device isn’t going to replace actual hotel workers, however. “They are not meant to replace our concierge service and the personal touch we are known for,” Plaza general manager Shane Krige told the blog Luxist. “It is to provide more choice. At a five star hotel you should have choices—if you want to use the iPad, you can do so. If you want a butler service, that is available, too. If you want to be left alone, that is a choice, as well. By putting the iPads in the guest rooms, we are bringing a new technology to everyone’s fingertips.”

The hotel claims to be the first to offer these services through the iPad. The Plaza first adopted the device for its Palm Court Hotel, back in June.

The Plaza is located at Central Park South and 5th Ave in Manhattan, conveniently across from Apple’s flagship store.

White iPhone 4 starts to get Best Buy, The Source shelf space

This shelf tag was apparently spotted this weekend at a Best Buy in Houston, and it speaks for itself: white iPhone 4, AT&T, $599.99 off contract (the same price as the black). Of course, we all know this thing is coming within the next few weeks at this point — there’s just too much evidence pointing in that direction — but the fact that we’ve got big box retailers printing and placing tags for it now suggests that it’s coming sooner rather than later. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, that QR code link is dead at the moment — we’ve linked it below in case you want to give it a shot.

Update: Looks like The Source (Canada’s version of Radio Shack) is also making room. See for yourself after the break. Thanks, Anonymous!

[Thanks, Joel P.]

Get a Free iPod Touch with Mac Computer Purchase

This article was written on June 03, 2008 by CyberNet.

apple back to school promotion.png

Apple is trying to sweet-talk college students into spending their hard-earned cash (or their parents’ hard-earned cash) on a new Mac computer this year. Starting now until September 15th, those students who purchase a Mac computer will be able to receive an iPod Touch for free after rebate. Qualifying computers include the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac. They’re calling it “the smartest way to start off the school year” and say, “Get the most for your parent’s money.”

Most students I know would have to be spending their own money if they wanted a new computer(not their parents’ money), so the most affordable option would be the MacBook line of computers that start at $999 for students. The only computers excluded from this offer include the Mac Mini and the 17″ iMac. Aside from students, faculty and staff of higher education institutions as well as any employee of a public or private K-12 institution or qualified homeschoolers are eligible as well.

The one thing you should note is that you won’t instantly get a free iPod Touch. It does involve a rebate process and the maximum amount of money that you’ll get back is $299, even if you purchase a 32GB iPod Touch. Your best bet is to simply go with the 8GB iPod Touch and then it will be free. You can also choose to get an iPod Nano in which case you’ll get a $199 rebate to cover your costs. No matter which iPod you choose, it has to be bought on the same receipt as your new Mac computer to qualify.

While the student discount is a pretty good deal, ($100 off a MacBook, $140 off an iMac, $200 off a MacBook Pro, and $230 off a MacBook Air) Apple computers are a little pricey and a free iPod still may not be enough to lure students in. It’ll definitely be enough for some students though, and Apple will likely see a pretty big jump in the number of iPod Touch users they have out there by the time this promotion ends in September.

Screen Grabs: Tango supplants FaceTime for Big Bang Theory videocall

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

It may not share the same level of name recognition as FaceTime (or heck, even Fring), but Tango’s multi-platform videocalling app is still a very real alternative. So real, in fact, that it was just used in an episode of The Big Bang Theory as a highly fictional (and severely busted) character makes an outlandish videocall to a mythical group of friends. Or was it all just a dream? Hop on down to the source link (and fast-forward to the 13th minute) to find out.

Greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 comes to Windows

It’s been a painful two days, hasn’t it? If you’re a Windows user looking for an untethered jailbreak for your iDevice, the answer is most certainly “yes.” The Chronic Dev Team has just let loose the greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, but unlike the build released 48 hours ago, this one’s meant for Wintel boxes. The team’s site seems to be down at the moment (shocker!), but there’s a download mirror linked below if you just can’t wait to get going. As always, we’d caution you to back up your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone before doing the deed, and since it’s the first of its kind (for this version of iOS, anyway), we’d be ready to see a few bugs along the way. Minor details, we know.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

iTunes gifting grifter cleaning out British bank accounts

On January 25th, The Register reported that one unlucky bloke saw his bank account emptied through a series of iTunes monthly gift purchases sent to an unknown Hotmail account. He was informed of the theft by an e-mail from Apple, saying his gift purchase had been confirmed, but alas, he’d already been taken to the tune of £1,000. It’s been over a week since the story appeared, but accounts continue to pour into an Apple customer support forum, echoing the accusations made to The Register — and, boy are people mad. Apparently, customers seeking Apple’s help have received a pat response that sounds awfully familiar: cancel your credit card and report the charges to your bank. We’ve yet to hear of this happening anywhere outside the UK, but we’re still interested to see how the great iTunes heist shakes out. If a suspicious Hotmail account is sucking you dry, we want all the sordid details.

AT&T fires back with latest iPhone ad: simultaneous voice and web more important than you think (video)

We get it AT&T, your iPhone can do voice and data at the same time, and Verizon’s can’t. Big Red’s Test Man proved that calls aren’t always doomed to drop on the iPhone, but AT&T’s firing right back and saying how you could be doomed in certain social situations, like forgetting to make a dinner reservation on your anniversary. Props for creativity here, but now that both sides have fired a shot across the other’s bow, can’t we all just get along? Yeah, probably not.

iPhone 4 on Verizon: how, when, where, and whether to buy it

The day of destiny is nearly upon us: on February 10th, you’ll finally be able to get an iPhone that works on Verizon. For us in the tech media, that’s one blown-out, seemingly never-ending rumor that we never have to write about again — whew! — but for you, this could very well mark the beginning of a magical journey. Of course, there are many, many things to consider that’ll influence your decision to buy: what carrier are you on currently? Do you already have an iPhone? How much traveling do you do? Are you a vegetarian? The list goes on and on — and we intend to help you figure it all out in time for launch day. What’s more, we’ll take a look at some of your best alternatives, too, because let’s be honest: just because the Verizon iPhone is here doesn’t mean that it’s right for everyone. So without further ado, let’s dive in and get this figured out.
