iOS 5 beta 3 comes out of the oven, brings new fixes and toggles to the table

iOS 5 beta 3 comes out of the oven, brings new fixes and toggles to the table

Ready for a newly refined recipe for the next flavor of iOS? After dropping iOS 5 beta 2 on us on June 24th, Apple has now unleashed beta 3, meaning those with sensitive taste buds (and developer accounts) can start sniffing and sussing out what’s changed. Of note seem to be a bevy of toggles controlling location services in detail, while there’s also a new switch for voice roaming in settings. From what we’re seeing not a lot has changed visually anywhere outside of the gears icon, but don’t let that stop you from grabbing this savory download.

Update: In case you were wondering, yes indeed this new beta can still be jailbroken.

Apple files second ITC patent infringement complaint against HTC

Nothing like a little legalese to take the edge off on a Monday, eh? Just months after Apple smacked HTC with an ITC complaint, it looks as if the company’s doing the same thing again. As if one ongoing ITC complaint against Samsung wasn’t enough, the US International Trade Commission is reporting that HTC is being accused again. As predicted, the patent infringement complaint is asking for the entity to block the import of “personal electronic devices” by HTC, but until it becomes available for public viewing, it’s hard to know exactly which device(s) ticked the lawyers in Cupertino off. As for the prior tiff? A judge is expected to rule on that August 5th, and those findings are then subject to review by the full commission. HTC’s not commenting yet given that even it hasn’t seen the details, so we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the drama unfolds.

Mac OS X Lion: This Is Not the Future We Were Hoping For

It breaks my heart to say this, but Mac OSX Lion’s interface feels like a failure. Its stated mission was to simplify the operating system, to unify it with the clean experience of iOS. That didn’t happen. More »

Steve Jobs impersonator officiates mock keynote, hawks Taiwanese tea (video)

Well, there’s clearly no better way to legitimize any new product than to have a faux Steve Jobs hawking it on-stage, in front of dozens of applauding mock journalists, with a 20-foot iPad 2 projected behind. The Jobs / John Stamos hybrid dropped by to pitch a Taiwanese company’s vast selection of tea, of all things, for a TV advertisement that’s apparently currently airing in Taiwan. Decked out in light jeans, a black mock turtleneck and sneakers, the impersonator even matched Steve’s hair color, rimless glasses, and current weight. The only thing missing was an actual Apple product — and months of media speculation. The “keynote” even ended with “one more thing,” as they often do: Tea drinkers will have a shot at winning a bonafide iPad 2 with each purchase of oolong, milk, or Apple-infused Tong Yi Cha.

Office 2008 for Mac Reaches Testing Phase

This article was written on April 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

Office 2008 for Macs is now in the private testing phase, and unfortunately it is still not known whether or not Microsoft will offer a public beta in the future.  The plan as it stands, is that the Mac version will be released in the 2nd half of 2007 which would make it the newest addition since 2004.

Several big changes from the previous version: First, it will be a universal binary.  This means that it will be able to run on both Intel and Power PC based Macs.  It will also support the XML file just as with Office 2007.

There’s also a new program called “My Day” which will give users quick access to their calendar info like appointments, without needing to open up Entourage first. It’s a stand alone application and users will be able to color-code everything. They’ve also improved the layout in Word and Excel templates, and the Ledger Sheets will make it easier to integrate formulas for balancing your checkbook and other financial management tasks.

As far as looks go, the user interface will look quite a bit different.  While it doesn’t look like Office 2007 with the ribbon, it does use what they’re calling an elements gallery.  This gallery will provide context sensitive toolbars, and appears to make use of tabbing. You’ll also notice their Publishing layout which will allow users to create layout-rich documents.

The images below come from Apple Insider, and they got them from a projector screen. While they’re not the greatest quality, it will still give you an idea (click to enlarge):

Mac Sales Up, iPod Sales Level Out in Q2

This article was written on April 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

Apple Logo.pngEver since Apple switched to Intel processors, they’ve seen the sales of their Mac computers go up, and up, and up. Part of this is probably due to the fact that former PC users feel comfortable making the “switch” knowing they can run Windows if need be. Apple’s fiscal second quarter just ended, and as the trend has been going lately, sales of Mac computers were up once again. In the official press release from Apple, they outlined just how many computers were sold.

In the 2nd quarter, over 2.2 million Mac computers were sold. To break it down further, notebook sales were up 61% (perhaps part of this increase is because of MacBook Air computers?) and desktops were up 37%. Out of the buyers who purchased a new computer from Apple this quarter, 50% of them were new to Mac which when you think about it, is pretty amazing. While Apple is far, far behind compared to the sales of PC computers, they’re doing a remarkable job gaining new users.

Also interesting are the numbers of iPods and iPhones that were sold. It almost looks as though the market is getting saturated with iPods because the sales for the 2nd quarter really didn’t go anywhere. Around 10.6 million iPods shipped this year in the 2nd quarter compared to 10.5 million in the 2nd quarter last year. About 1.7 million iPhones sold which is down compared to the 2.3 million that were shipped in their 1st fiscal quarter of 2008. One thought here is that iPod sales are flat because more people are investing in iPhones instead?

In all, Apple’s 2nd quarter revenue was around $7.51 billion which is up 43% from their 2nd quarter last year when revenue was $5.26 billion.

For those of you just skimming through, here’s a quick re-cap:

  • 2.2 million Macs shipped in the 2nd quarter
  • 61% of the sales were laptops
  • 37% were desktops
  • 50% of retail buyers are new to Mac

Pokemon headed to iOS, Android, Nintendo still doesn’t give a Jigglypuff about casual gaming

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata made no bones about his disdain for casual mobile gaming during his keynote at GDC earlier this year. According to the executive, Nintendo will sustain itself with the sort of value absent from the current app explosion. Rovio naturally took issue with the statement and fired back, like so many disgruntled feathered animals. With all of that in mind, it was a bit surprising to hear that a Pokemon card game is headed for the iPhone and Android devices in Japan this summer — after all, Nintendo does own a share of the popular monster-based franchise. Before you get too attached to the concept of Mario on your iOS device, however, keep two things in mind — first, Nintendo only owns about a third of the franchise. Second, the company quickly shot down the suggestion of further expansion into the world of phone apps. Those 3DS games aren’t going to buy themselves, after all.

Element5’s Mini L Solarbag brings eco-friendly energy, protection to your iPad

Modern day solar bags are more about looks than utility — the energy conversion rates on those things aren’t exactly jaw-dropping — but if it comes between a generic satchel and one that’s Ma Earth-approved, well… you know what to do. Element5’s Swiss Made Mini L Solarbag is tailored to fit your iDevice of choice, but it’s fairly obvious that the iPad line will be most at home here. We’re guessing that the company’s taking a few liberties with that “mini miracle” tagline, and we aren’t exactly thrilled with the lack of information surrounding charging time, but those who value form over function can get their order in now for 348 Swiss Franc (or $412 in actual money).

Hackers do Apple’s Job, Again

This article was written on October 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

iPod Classic on 5G

I think Apple needs to start taking some of their cues from hackers because they are truly demonstrating what the masses want. When the iPhone was originally released hackers were forced to find a way to get real third-party applications onto the device, and it didn’t take long for that to happen. Now Apple is trying to make amends by releasing a true SDK in February for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

And then Microsoft announced that the original Zune will be getting the same firmware update that the Zune 2 will have, and many people were angry that Apple didn’t do the same thing with the iPod Classic. Hackers went at it again and were able to port over the firmware to 5G and 5.5G iPods!

Information on the hacked firmware can be found here, and here is the page that you’ll need to download it from. If after installation your iPod doesn’t get past the Apple logo you’ll need to press and hold the center and play buttons at the same time until “Disk Mode” appears on the screen. From there you can restore your iPod’s firmware back to the original. The developer claims that this firmware update “cannot, and will not brick your iPod.”

Here’s a video demonstration that shows what the new firmware looks like on a 5G iPod:
