Skype for iPad leaked in promo video (video)

Skype lets iPad app out of the bag in leaked ad (video)

If you’ve lost sleep over the lack of a dedicated Skype app for your iPad, you can rest easy tonight knowing somewhere out there it does exist — or at least a promo video does. Earlier today, someone over at Skype unintentionally (we assume) posted what looks like an ad for a real-deal app for the iOS slab. Of course, the evidence has since been pulled, but you can check out a ripped version (sans audio) after the break. It looks like the days of blowing up ye ole iPhone Skype are numbered.

Update: The folks over at TUAW had a chat with Skype’s Rick Osterloh about the iPad app, and he says you can expect most of the functionality to carry over from the iPhone. There are, unfortunately, a few desktop features, like file sharing, that won’t make an appearance. Sadly, Osterloh didn’t spill the release-date beans.

Card.io SDK takes swipe at competition with camera-enabled mobile payments (video)

Card.io SDK takes swipe at competition with camera-enabled mobile payments (video)

In an attempt to edge its way into the crowded mobile payments market, a new credit card scanning system is saying “ah, hell no!” to typing and swiping. Card.io is billed as an SDK that takes advantage of smartphone cameras to let devs accept credit, because, as its creators point out, “typing on mobile phones is slow, and most consumers don’t have a separate hardware attachment.” When it’s time to pull out the plastic, Card.io gets your phone’s camera going, and up pops a little green rectangle, in which you frame your card and snap a pic. Your credit card info is then processed by a third-party merchant, and the details are subsequently deleted from your phone. Can you hear that? That’s the sound of our chubby thumbs breathing a sigh of relief. The Card.io SDK for iOS is now available at the source link below, and an Android version should be close behind. For now, hop on past the break for a video demo.

Visidon Applock sees your pretty face, grants you Android access (video)

In the event you got lulled into a groovy seat dance by that most excellent muzak above, let us repeat – this app does not protect your lockscreen. That said, Visidon’s Applock will prevent the privacy-adverse from messing with your personally curated app collection. Have a nosy significant lover? No sweat — snap a pick with your front-facing cam, enable the face-lock in your settings, and those sexts are as good as blocked. It’s far from foolproof, however, as some comments indicate an extended bit of facial-wriggling tricks the app into unlock mode. Oh well, you’re so vain, you’ll probably think this Android market link is for you — don’t you?

[Thanks, Matti]

Battleship HD app lets you sink ships on your iPad

Battleship HD app lets you sink ships on your iPad

You sank my battleship! Oh those sweet, sweet words. We’ve been longing to hear them since we set up camp behind our iPad, and Electronic Arts has just answered our cries. That’s right, the Battleship HD app is now available for download on your iOS slab, featuring a multiple-player mode, which pits you against friends (and presumably foes) packing an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It’s also got a single-player mode, available in three flavors: Classic, Salvo, and Super Weapons. Now go forth and drop bombs! The iPad app is now available at the source link for $3.

HP announces Pivot for TouchPad, the curated, magazine-like way to find some apps

HP announces TouchPad Pivot, the curated, magazine-like way to find some apps

Finding apps can be tough, especially when your Store or Marketplace is overwhelmed with a daily flood of debutantes. That’s not exactly a problem for HP, whose App Catalog for the webOS 3.0 TouchPad officially launches on July 1st and will be, the company admits, a little spartan at first. But HP has a plan for a future flood of apps: Pivot. It’s basically a curated digital magazine that will present a selection of apps someone at HP found interesting for whatever reason — a way for users to discover new downloads and, more importantly, for niche developers to not get lost in the shuffle. HP hopes this will attract developers, taking a different approach from the competition, which often resorts to outright promises of cash to pique their interest — but a few free TouchPads never hurts .

Pioneer’s AppRadio delivers iPhone integration, automotive and audio bliss for $400

We knew Pioneer’s AppRadio car stereo was coming to cozy up with our iPhones, but we didn’t know how much its iOS integration capabilities would cost, until now. Turns out 400 bucks buys you one, and it’s picked up some new capabilities since we got handsy with the device last month. In addition to letting you listen to tunes stored on your iPhone, access Google Maps, and make calls, the AppRadio now has access to your iPhone’s contacts, calendar, videos, and photos as well. Unfortunately, there’s still only four other apps (Rdio, Pandora, MotionX-GPS Drive, and INRIX) available, though Pioneer says more are coming. With a name like AppRadio they ought to get here soon, as in immediately. Peep the PR after the break for the full monty.

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Ford SYNC AppLink gets rolling in ten new models, still just three apps deep

Back when we gave Ford’s SYNC AppLink a test drive in that little green Fiesta, we got word that the Mustang was next in line to receive the service. Well, earlier this year, the auto outfit Linked-up the Mustang and now it’s rolling out the application for 10 new 2012 models, including the F-150, Fusion (Hybrid and otherwise), Super Duty, and Expedition. It also says it’s got a slew of developers lining up to bring hands-free control of their apps to AppLink. For now, though, no matter which SYNC-enabled beast you boast, or which OS you’re rocking (BlackBerry OS, iOS, or Android), you’ll be riding dirty with just two linked apps at most. Full PR after the break.

Google TV 2.0 ‘Fishtank’ developer kit revealed running Honeycomb and apps

As Google TV gears up for a Honeycomb-based v2.0, the team announced at the I/O event that developers could get access to “Fishtank” hardware for them to test their apps on and here it is, revealed by Geek.com. The hardware itself is a relatively nondescript box packing an Intel CE4100 processor (no ARM…yet) and a Logitech Revue wireless keyboard that connects wirelessly via a USB dongle, plus a few more ins and outs than retail boxes have including coax. The software is the real star with its Android 3.1 style blues and blacks in the new menus providing access to a list of running apps, logged in accounts and notifications. Things could change before the beta ends, but this report indicates a major issue between is how developers will get to display or interact with live TV. Being able to overlay data on a live feed, or at least have Dual View picture-in-picture is a big part of many developer’s plans and so far Google has apparently not committed to making API access available. Bringing interactivity to broadcasts would be a major advantage for Google TV as a connected TV platform if it can pull it off, we’ll see if it makes it into this summer’s update or if it ends up on the waiting-for list alongside SageTV integration.

Vizio extends its LCD HDTV sales lead; new 3D, VIA Plus and ultrawidescreen TVs are on the way

We already took a fresh look at the Vizio Tablet due this summer, but the company’s main business is HDTVs and there it’s on top of US LCD sales again, with more than 20 percent of the market in Q1. Of the top five selling TVs in Q1, four are Vizios priced at $698 or less, while the other is a $1,699 MSRP Samsung LCD. Vizio launched its lower end E3D line earlier this year, the next series on the way are edge-lit M3D models due in August and September that up the refresh rate to 240Hz, come with four pairs of passive 3D glasses instead of two and have a Bluetooth remote. Up next, the 21:9 ultrawidescreen sets we saw at CES are real and will ship in October as the Cinemawide series in 2560×1080 58- and 50-inch models. Finally, the top of of the line XVT 6 series will feature the new VIA Plus Google TV platform and are going to be available in 47- and 55-inch sizes, but won’t ship until December There’s still no prices for any of these yet, but we’re going to guess they’ll go low as they usually do. Check the press release for all the details after the break including a glancing mention of the Vizio Phone.
