Pioneer shows off iPhone remote controllable Blu-ray players

The “works with iPhone” stamp has taken a whole new meaning for Pioneer as it’s just added two new Blu-ray players due in May featuring iControlAVR app support baked in. You won’t be taking advantage of the VSX-1020’s (VSA-1020 in Japan) 3D compatibility with the BDP-330 or higher end BDP-LX53, but owners will enjoy return of last year’s well-received Precision Quartz Lock System with the addition of YouTube streaming and RSS feeds. Taking advantage of the Apple tie-ins will require hooking up to the network and a WiFi dongle is extra, check out the screens from the remote app after the break and decide on your own if physical buttons (or only being able to bring a touch interface to certain discs) was just too much of a hassle.

PS3’s summer 3D firmware is all fun and games… and no Blu-ray movie support?

If you want you and your loved ones looking like the family pictured alongside this text, sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from a PlayStation 3 through your television console, your best bet is to envision Ecco, not Flipper.* According to TechRadar, Sony has clarified that the summer firmware update to enable 3D applies to games only, and that 3D Blu-ray movie support will come with a second update due out later this year. We haven’t been able to confirm the announcement ourselves, but suddenly, that freebie copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D isn’t looking so tantalizing.

* Hypothetically speaking, of course. We have no confirmation on a 3D version of Sega’s Ecco the Dolphin or Season 3 of Flipper, featuring “The Most Expensive Sardine in the World.”

Netflix inks with Universal and Twentieth Century Fox: first TV streams, more films, and 28 day rental delay

Everyone’s streaming media darling, Netflix, has just reached terms with both Universal and Twentieth Century Fox. Both agreements beef up Netflix’s streaming content while limiting Netflix to renting DVD and Blu-ray discs 28 days after the retail street date — yup, just like with Warner Brothers. To put that into perspective, while Twentieth Century Fox’s “Avatar” DVD/Blu-ray will hit shelves on April 22nd it won’t be available for Netflix rental until the end of May. On the plus side we’ve got a first time, Netflix TV streaming agreement with TCF — albeit, released in a window it decides. Content includes the complete prior seasons of shows like “24,” “Bones,” and “Lie to Me” in addition to older library titles like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Can’t say we didn’t see this one coming.

Blu-ray Super-Sized to 128GB, Requires New Player

blurayBlu-ray disks are about to get a whole lot bigger. The Blu-ray Disc Association has announced two super-sized new specs for the already capacious disks, letting them squeeze up to 128GB onto a single silver platter. How is this done? The boring, old-fashioned way: layers.

There are two new specifications, both with jaw-crunching names: BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable disks) and IH-BD (Intra-Hybrid disks). The first is designed for high capacity, and fuses up to four layers to make an archiving format for people with a lot of data (”broadcasting, medical and document imaging enterprises” are the suggested markets).

The second new format, IH-BD, is a melding of a read-only layer and a re-writeable layer, able to contain 25GB each. The explanation is that a producer could ship a disk containing both non-erasable, “critical” data and “related user data”. We can’t think of any good reason for that right now, but we’re certain it’ll be handy for someone.

Neither of these new formats will work in your current Blu-ray player, nor should they. It’s pretty clear these generously-sized disks are for storage rather than publishing, although the new machines required to use them will be backward-compatible with existing disks. Still, imagine the movie-extras you could fit on this thing.

Gateway NV5933u review

A Core i3 processor, Blu-ray drive, and 320GB hard drive for $629.99 — does the Gateway NV5933u really need more of an introduction than that? We didn’t think so, since that’s all it took for us to track down the budget multimedia 15.6-inch laptop and get it into our eager hands. For a budget system it sure has the specs to carry it on home, but after the dog has barked at the mailman and you’ve gotten it out of the box, how is it in actual everyday use? You know where to find out. We’ll see you after the break in our full review.

Avatar disc opens up online-only extras until ultimate edition arrives in November, 3D next year

Fox continues to pull back the layers of its release schedule for Avatar after yesterday’s press event with director James Cameron, producer James Landau and Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers (above) as Reuters indicates the Blu-ray 3D version will arrive next year. What does 2010 hold for the most dedicated fans of Pandora? While the DVD and Blu-ray editions due April 22 will arrive stripped clean of any extras whatsoever, a registration code slipped in the case will give owners access to “The AVATAR Program” to view bonus content online, adopt a “virtual hometree” among the million being planted and other enticements to string them along connect this release with an ultimate edition due in November. Check the press release after the break for all the details and see if you can resist the urge to triple dip.

Sony’s new 14- and 17-inch VAIO E laptops invite you to taste the rainbow

Sony's new 14- and 17-inch VAIO E laptops invite you to taste the rainbow

Was Sony’s last VAIO E laptop, the blue one with a pink keyboard, not garish enough for you? Maybe these new models will saturate your questionable color palette. The E series has gotten a bit smaller and also a bit bigger, adding 14- and 17-inch models to the lineup. The 14-inch, 1600 x 900 VPCEA1S1E models include Intel Core i3-330M processors at 2.13GHz, 4GB of DDR3 memory, 500GB disk drives, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 graphics. The 17-inch, 1920 x 1080 VPCEC1S1E moves up to Core i5-430M processors at 2.26GHz, 1TB of storage, Radeon HD 5650 graphics, and replaces the smaller unit’s DVD player with a Blu-ray drive. All offer 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, and HDMI output for your media entertainment. No word on price or availability, but we have confirmed you can get them in black if you’re not feeling quite so colorful on a Monday.

Panasonic Touch the Future Tour lets production Full HD 3DTVs hit the public stage

Panasonic has never needed to wait for a new studio album before putting together another major tour, the latest of which it’s dubbed Touch the Future. Trading in the traveling truck exhibition for a more intimate indoor setting, the real production Full HD 3D televisions are available and on display, along with glasses, Blu-ray players plus a few other products for good measure. We took a look as soon as the doors opened in NYC (the display runs through today at the Penn Plaza Pavilion and other locations in Chicago and Los Angeles, check the schedule for 12 more cities on deck) and got an eye full of the same 50-inch plasma 3DTVs on sale at Best Buy stores around the country. One major new look for this demo was an NVIDIA PC running the 3DTV Play solution, as you can see from the pics even New York’s finest enjoyed turning a lap or two of Need for Speed: Shift in 3D. The action was smooth and easy compatibility with 3D gaming on the PC should provide plenty of content while we wait for more true 3D games to hit consoles (which should ramp up after the PS3 update this summer) while checking out Blu-ray demos on a 50-inch television proved every bit as engaging this time as it did on the 152-inch CES display.

Samsung’s 3D BD-C6900 Blu-ray player now shipping, for real

Samsung's 3D BD-C6900 Blu-ray player now shipping, for real

The last we heard of Samsung’s BD-C6900 Blu-ray player it was up on Amazon for a pre-order — and then it was mysteriously gone again. We’re not sure whether anyone clicked the button quickly enough to get one of those into their shopping cart and onto their credit card statement back then, but even if you missed out then it is actually shipping now. At least, it is according to Amazon, which lists the thing as “In Stock.” The price is still $399.99 and for that you get 1GB of integrated memory, “explosive 3D capabilities,” DLNA streaming, and of course that lovely skylight to show off the spinning blur of your latest library addition — or Netflix rental.
