Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover vs. InCase Convertible Magazine Jacket… Fight!

By now you’ve seen Apple’s Smart Cover, right? The mind blowing cover (don’t call it a case) pretty much stole the show during yesterday’s iPad 2 press event, causing children to weep at the sight of our exploded bodies. Thing is, we’ve seen the design before. Oh sure, Apple improved upon it significantly, but there’s no mistaking its InCase Convertible Magazine Jacket heritage. See the two slug it out on video after the break in some kind of weird reverse KIRF cage match. We guess 2011 really is the year of the copycats.

iPad 2 Gets “Smart Cover”

ipad 2 smartcover pink.jpg

A cool new gadget needs a cool new case, right? This here is the Smart Cover for the iPad 2. According to Jobs, the cover was “designed alongside the iPad 2.” The cover the iPad’s screen, complete with a micro-fiber interior that “cleans the screen when you open it.” Built in magnets hold it to the device and “auto-align” it to the screen. Opening it up will wake up the iPad and closing it will put it back to sleep.

The cover also folds up into a triangular shape, serving as a horizontal stand for the device when it’s in use. The case comes in a number of different colors. It’ll run you $39. Apple is also releasing a $69 leather case for the new iPad.

iPad 2 gets a Smart Cover

We can’t say we were expecting to be impressed by a case for the new iPad 2, but Apple’s pulled something of a surprise out its hat with its new Smart Covers for the tablet. Available in multiple colors and in your choice of polyurethane or leather variants, the covers attach to the iPad with a self-aligning magnetic hinge and can also be folded into a triangle and used as a stand. What’s more, they’ll automatically wake or put your iPad to sleep when you open or close the cover, and they even pack a microfiber lining that cleans your screen each time you flip it open. As Steve Jobs explained, Apple designed the covers right alongside the iPad itself and, as he pointed out in true sound bite fashion, “it’s not a case — it’s a cover.” Look for the poly covers to set you back $39, while the leather ones will run $69 apiece — video is after the break.

Bentley Collection iPad, iPhone, and BlackBerry cases are made of rich, non-Corinthian leather

Bentley Collection iPad, iPhone, and BlackBerry cases are made of rich, non-Corinthian leather

If you’d like to give your iPad the same cosseting your posterior receives when you slot into the sport buckets in your Continental GT then you, good chap, are in luck. Bentley’s “luxury leather partner” Ettinger, which ensures no surface of the vehicles is bereft of animal hide, is releasing a line of gadget cases to cover your iPad, iPhone, or BlackBerry — though it’s unclear exactly which model for the latter. Prices? You’re looking at £45 for either of the phone holsters or £89 for the iPad-sized model. That’s about $73 and $145, respectively, and a lot of cash for a little hide. If you’re still not dissuaded there’s another image of the tablet-sized version and a press release below. Those, at least, are free.

GAEMS Xbox 360 traveling case gets sleek redesign, still won’t help you spell correctly

The last rendition we saw of the GAEMS console-carrying case looked more like a giant lunch box than a solution to your portable gaming needs. If you’re still interested in bringing your Xbox 360 on the road, the company has redesigned the case and it now supports the fat and slim versions of the 360 and even the PS3-skinny. What’s new in this compact carrying case is the fact there’s actually room to store the console, controllers and power brick. It comes bundled with a remote, HDMI cable and power supply to power the speakers and LED screen. If you’re road trippin’ any time soon and want this beast, you can save yourself 20 bones by pre-ordering before April 20th and you’ll receive the $300 case come June.

Fisher Price releases iCan Play Case and Kid-Tough See Yourself Camera, you’ll thank ’em

You know who you can count on to protect your technology? Fisher Price, that’s who. We know, it sounds a bit crazy, but what other company out there is thinking about safeguarding your gadgets from those adorable yet greasy-handed kids? The company is kicking off Toy Fair with a few new gadgets that do just that, and first up, is that cute little Laugh & Learn iCan Play iPhone case up there. The $20 plastic enclosure stores any generation iPhone or iPod Touch and has a screen cover to protect your precious capacitive LCD from “dribbles and drool.” Seriously, OtterBox has its work cut out — the toy even has rattles and handles to entertain when mommy or daddy have to yank the phone out to make a call. And because looking at e-mails, texts, or apps could get bit boring for those three to 36-month-olds after awhile, Fisher is adding a few new Laugh & Learn apps to the App Store later this month.

What about the older kids, you ask? Well, they won’t be interested in your brand new point-and-shoot when they’ve got a Kid-Tough See Yourself Camera of their own. Or at least that’s what the company’s hoping — the plastic camera has a rotating 1.2 megapixel lens with a 4x zoom so kids can take pictures of themselves and then check it out on the 1.8-inch LCD screen. The shooter houses a SD card slot and is powered by four AA batteries. Sure, it doesn’t have the latest and greatest specs, but what $70 camera do you know that can customize shots with “fun digital stamps”? We told you your gadgets would stay safe and sound. The iCan Play Case and Kid-Tough camera won’t be available until this summer, but we’ve got the gallery of hands-on shots below so you can check ’em out earlier.

Thermaltake Level 10 GT case polishes up a classic, available now for $280

The Thermaltake Level 10, arguably the sweetest-looking enclosure to ever hit the mass market, has managed to find a chassis worthy of being called its successor in the shape of the behemoth you see standing before you, the Level 10 GT. It softens the aggressively modular aesthetic of the original, but in exchange delivers a more performance-focused design, replete with three 200mm fans, air filters everywhere you look, a neat little window so you can peek inside your full-sized tower of doom, and enough space to fit the very largest of modern graphics cards. Thermaltake is asking for $280 on its online store and you can order one up today. Video awaits after the break, though we wouldn’t skip out on the Flickr gallery below, either.

Mophie sneaks out new Juice Pack Air with Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 compatibility

There’s been no shortage of cases for Verizon’s flavor of the iPhone 4 — Ballistic, iLuv, iKit, AGF and Scosche have already announced ones of their own — but if you’re looking for a mainstay in the industry, you can now turn to Mophie. The company’s life-doubling Juice Pack Air has been ever-so-slightly reengineered to work with both AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 units, with initial shipments expected by the end of the month. At first it’ll ship in black with silver accents, while soft-touch red and glossy white versions are scheduled for release shortly thereafter. Still $79.95, and still awfully hard to resist for 3G power users.
