Hasta La Gadget!

So, there’s good news and bad. Naturally, we’re going to start with the former. A month after we spotted this character sneaking around at Mobile World Congress, LG has finally taken the (official) wraps off of its incoming WCP-700 Wireless Charging Pad. It’s a pretty familiar design — a slim (6.29- x 3.54- x 0.39-inch) inductive charging pad with a battery of LEDs to let you know the current status of things. We’re guessing this guy is designed to work initially with the Verizon-bound Revolution, but given that LG makes no mention of what phones / cases will eventually be compatible, it’ll have to remain just that for now. As for the bad news? Well, aside from not knowing what exactly this unit is for (in terms of compatibility), we’re also left in the dark when it comes to pricing and a ship date. But hey, at least we’ve got a trio of high resolution images to gawk at.

Update: Fulton Innovation has just confirmed that LG is using its Qi-compliant eCoupled technology for the charging pad.

The solar-powered, green and white Beautiful Earth Group EV charging station, which once found its shipping container internals filled with a Mini E, is no longer. Well, it’s no longer where it was, anyway. It’s now somewhere completely different, a place that happens to be just down the road, a land known by many as Brooklyn. It’s Brooklyn Bridge Park, specifically, and Better Earth has donated the thing to the facilities department there. It’ll be used to charge up the service vehicles that patrol the place, apparently including a pair of GEM and Toro Workman EVs that look like they might have been Photoshopped into the promotional picture above. The presumably non-digitally-manipulated ones will all be recharged using the charging station’s 24 solar cells, generating 5.6kW and, ultimately, saving the world. Or, at least, the Park.

Everywhere you go in Japan there are vending machines. Whether you’re in a Buddhist monastery or a botanical garden you’re never far from a cold bottle of Pocari Sweat or Gokuri Apple. Soon Japanese drivers will never be far from a place to charge their EV, either. Forking Company, which oversees 1.2 million vending machines across Japan, is going to start working with Panasonic to deploy chargers for electric vehicles along with those machines. It’s a potentially perfect solution, since these stations already having power and, often, connectivity. Over the next 12 months the plan is to deploy 10,000 such chargers — and probably just as many menacing looking posters of Tommy Lee Jones hawking his particular blend of coffee.

Are you the sort that doesn’t mind letting random people pull up in your driveway to recharge their electric vehicle? Then you might want to consider using the new PlugShare app for iOS devices that was just released today, which will let you broadcast your location and plug status to everyone passing by. Of course, there are also some privacy settings if you prefer to control things a bit more tightly, and the app also includes a complete database of public charging stations across the US if you’d rather not bother someone else at all when you’re out on the road. What’s more, while the app is iOS-only at the moment, the company promises that an Android version is “coming soon.” Head on past the break for a quick demo video.
