AT&T brings HSUPA to Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G, one requires WiFi to download update

If you’re the somewhat-proud-but-feeling-throttled owner of a Motorola Atrix 4G or HTC Inspire 4G, your days of terribly slow uploads are nearly through — following some preliminary tests, AT&T is rolling out updates that provide “increased potential data speed” to both HSPA+ handsets right on cue. The Inspire 4G’s patch will also “make the email set up process much easier,” while the Atrix 4G will actually get a pair of updates which will allegedly bring better Bluetooth headset compatibility, fingerprint reader performance and battery life (which is always a plus) as well as the questionable utility of turning the Atrix into an EDGE hotspot, and a bump to Android 2.2.2 to hopefully fix any lingering SMS routing bugs. Word of warning though, you’ll need to throw your Atrix up on a WiFi network to obtain these goodies — all the Gs in the world won’t help you.

HTC ChaChas all the way to the bank with Q1 results

HTC’s Q1 results are in, and the company has plenty of reason to dance. The Taiwanese handset manufacturer posted net profits of NT$14.83 billion ($517.21 million) for the quarter — up nearly 200 percent from the year prior. Sales for smartphones like the Inspire 4G, Thunderbolt, EVO Shift 4G, and Incredible S were the reason for the bump, coupled with interest in upcoming phones like the Wildfire S and ChaCha. HTC managed to sell 9.7 million smartphones in that timeframe, proving that enthusiastic product names really do pay off.

There are two types of people who want to buy an Android smartphone: those who simply don’t want an Apple product, and those who want to trick out their phones fancier than a Honda Civic from the set of The Fast and the Furious.

If you belong in the latter crowd, you may be familiar with at least some aspects of the hardware-modding community. But what of the layman who wants to pimp his phone and hasn’t a clue where to begin?

We’ve gathered a handful of the most mod-worthy Android phones, complete with straightforward instructions on how to fully go “Vin Diesel” on your smartphone. That is to say, we show you how to gain root access — or superuser, full-permissions status — to each phone. That allows for customization far beyond what you can accomplish with a stock device. After root is achieved, the sky’s the limit.

Warning: More often than not, rooting or unlocking your phone voids your warranty, which means you’ll get no love from your carrier’s tech-support line if you accidentally screw it up. You also run the risk of “bricking” your phone — essentially rendering it useless — when performing some of these procedures.

So, proceed at your own risk!

WiFi HTC Flyer hits the FCC, leaves only a line drawing in its wake

That, dear readers, is where you’ll be able to find the FCC label on your brand new HTC Flyer — well, assuming you decide to get in on the company’s 7-inch dose of Android, and also assuming that HTC ever decides to actually release the thing in the US. We assume it does, as the machine has just been given the blessing of the FCC. This looks to be a WiFi-only model, also tested for BlueTooth compliance, but lacking 3G. So, if you got your pre-order in last week know that there’s at least nothing federal standing between you and your $499 aluminum slice of Gingerbread, which we’re still hoping will ship before the spring is through.

HTC job post reveals intention to make a mark on American cars

HTC’s been riding high on its smartphone success as of late, and now it looks like its ready to cruise into the automotive market. That’s right, the world’s third most valuable smartphone manufacturer is seeking to add a North American “automotive business development director” to its team. According to a job post that appeared on the Taiwan-based company’s website, HTC is looking to hire an “experienced leader in the automotive electronics industry” to “develop business in the automotive market.” Does that mean we’ll be seeing an HTC-branded EV hitting the pavement stateside in the near future? We doubt it, but we suspect this could mean an uptick in HTC in-car accessories and built-in console computers this side of the pond.

Epix brings its thousands of movies to Google TV; apps for Android, Roku and Playbook on the way

While some video providers are moving away from Google TV, Roku and the Playbook, and Netflix still has yet to officially release its movie streaming app on any Android devices, the Epix channel is going all in. Following its “Big on Any Screen” slogan, it will roll out apps on a slew of devices over the second quarter beyond its current Flash player. The Google TV portal is already up and running as seen above and apps are on the way for “Android tablets and phones from HTC, LG and Motorola” — we’ve pinged to see if this will be device exclusive but haven’t received a response yet — the BlackBerry Playbook, Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players and Roku streaming players. Not listed in the press release is anything iOS, but Epix confirmed it is working on an app that is waiting for Apple’s approval. Not familiar with the channel? It has over 3,000 movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM plus original programs and live events that is available via your cable or satellite TV provider and launched with an HBO Go-style online component. Verizon FiOS is apparently on deck to help push the new apps, check out the rest of the details in the press release after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake: Windows Phone 7 debuts in China

If smartphone platforms are legitimized by a KIRF manufacturer’s tenacity to rip them off, then Windows Phone has truly arrived. Today we’re looking at a larger than life “HTC”-branded knock-off of the Omnia 7, replete with an 800 x 480 4.8-inch (!) capacitive touchscreen and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Given the massive size of this phone, there’s plenty of room for features, which include Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS connectivity, along with a five megapixel camera, dual-SIMs and two microSD slots (for up to 32GB storage). Whew. Impressive specs aside, the device comes saddled with Windows Mobile 6.5 — which has been heavily modified to resemble WP7’s tile interface. There’s no word yet on pricing — just ask someone selling phones on a blanket the next time you’re in Shenzhen, okay?

Verizon officially announces HTC Droid Incredible 2: available April 28th for $200

It was pretty clear that a launch was imminent, and Verizon has now finally officialy announced that the HTC Droid Incredible 2 will be available on Thursday, April 28th. It will run you the usual $200 on a two-year contract, which will buy you a 4-inch super LCD screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash, a brand new 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and WiFi mobile hotspot support. As expected, it’s also a world phone, but it’ll be left in the dust by the Thunderbolt when it comes to sheer speeds due to its lack of LTE support. Full press release is after the break.

HTC Sensation procures online real estate, launches sign-up page

The G2X may be getting all the attention as the current flagship for T-Mobile, but HTC is bound and determined to make sure it doesn’t stay that way for long. Curious souls may be happy to learn that a sign-up page has been set up for the HTC Sensation to update fans on news and announcements. This is a good sign that nary a precious moment of time is being wasted; after all, we’ve got a full six weeks before the heavily-rumored June 8 launch, and there’s an abundance of opportunities for the two companies to get the word out like crazy between now and then.
