JailbreakMe for the iPad 2 is finally live / not live, just keep refreshing (update: video)

We just mashed our refresh button about a million times to get the screenshot you see above, but it was worth it. JailbreakMe 3.0 with support for the iPad 2 is finally live, and we’re already getting word from tipsters who claim to have successfully jailbroken their iPad 2s running iOS 4.3.3, as evidenced by the pseudo-blurry jailbroken Verizon model below. Thankfully, all of this suggests we’re not dealing with the dodgy release that was leaked previously, but let us know in the comments how it’s working for you this time around and hit the break for another screenshot.

Update: Austin wrote in to tell us about a new jailbreaking tutorial from YouTube user Duncan33303 — head past the break to watch it for yourself.

Leaked iPad 2 jailbreak available now? (updated: better wait)

Can’t say it happened at Mach 3, but the iPad 2 jailbreak that we saw teased back in mid-March seems to have made its way out into the wild at long last. According to the video hosted up just past the break, JailbreakMe 3.0 is now available with support for the iPad 2. It’s bruited that the version making its way around now was leaked by a beta tester (read: it ain’t the final build), and we’re seeing mixed success / failure stories in the related YouTube comments. We’d encourage the daring to tap the links below in order to get started, and if you do, let us know how it all works out below. Per usual, you’d be doing yourself a solid by fully syncing and backing things up before diving off the deep end.

Update: This is working only for iOS 4.3, so if you’ve updated, you’re sadly out of luck.

Update 2: We’ve received multiple reports that this particular jailbreak is available for iOS 4.3.0, only. It looks like users rocking 4.3.3 will just have to wait.

Update 3: We’ve received notice that this version is actually a pre-release of the upcoming jailbreak that is not finished, not intended for public consumption, and apparently leaked by a beta tester. For this reason we’re pulling the video embed because we wouldn’t recommend using it — especially given the final version is probably not far off.

iOS 5 beta 2 blocks Gevey SIM Unlock, brings photo album curation to iDevices

It’s only been a few days since Apple released iOS 5 beta 2, but we’ve already received a bevy of tips from developers who’ve spent some quality time with the update and uncovered a few of its more salient features. Here are some highlights.

  • It looks like Apple has blocked Applenberry’s Gevey SIM software, which allowed users to unlock devices running iOS 4.3 or iOS 5 beta 1 without having to jailbreak. (Read)
  • According to Dev Team member MuscleNerd, iOS 5 beta 2 can still be jailbroken using the RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 tethering tool, released earlier this month. (Read)
  • The beta refresh also brings a few tweaks to iOS 5’s notifications system. Traditional alerts and reminders now pop up on the lock screen in larger typeface, alongside their appropriate icon. If left unattended, the notifications will eventually be added to the Android-like banner menu, at the top of the lock screen. (Read)
  • Users can now create and curate photo albums directly from their iDevices, though the feature isn’t without its quirks. A tipster informs us that photos added to new albums remain in the original collection, as well. If you migrate an image from one album to another and delete the original, both pics will disappear.
  • The next beta release might be issued over the air. When a tipster checked for updates on an iPad running beta 2, he received a “No updates were found” message, suggesting that users may be able to find future refreshes without syncing their devices with iTunes. (Screenshot after the break.)

Update: We’re hearing from many of you that the gallery functionality was actually a part of beta 1. But, you’re encouraged to continue enjoying it here, in beta 2.

ChevronWP7 Labs will jailbreak your Windows Phone with Microsoft’s approval

ChevronWP7 Labs

Microsoft just earned itself a boatload of geek-cred and made Apple and Sony look pretty bad in the process. We knew the Windows Phone team was playing nice with the jailbreakers from ChevronWP7, but we didn’t realize just how cozy the two were going to get. Today the devs announced that ChevronWP7 Labs would open up soon, with the approval of Redmond, allowing users to load homebrew apps on their handsets. Unlike tools from the iPhone Dev Team, this service won’t be free. Instead, customers will have to cough up a small fee via PayPal — but we’re sure many of you are more than willing to pay a reasonable price to avoid the sort of cat and mouse game Apple has been playing with hackers since 2007.

Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 released for Mac, brings tethered jailbreak to iOS 5

Your patience has paid off. The planet’s first openly accessible jailbreak is now available for those who’ve taken the plunge with iOS 5 (beta), and if you just can’t go another day without access to Cydia, well… you don’t have to. Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 has been released for Mac users, but given that it’s a tethered solution, you’ll have to plug ‘er back into your machine each time you need to reboot. We’d encourage you to wait for the inevitable untethered alternative, but those who aren’t having any of that “listening to your elders” hoopla can hop on down to the source link.

iOS 5 jailbroken

See those Cydia and iSSH icons? How about the Reminders and Newstand apps, see those? What you’re looking at is the harmonious coexistence of hacks and Apple’s virgin iOS 5 beta release running on a 4th generation iPod touch. In other words, MuscleNerd and Co are letting us know that iOS 5 presents few surprises so far when its comes to closing the existing holes exploited by the tethered limera1n jailbreak.

Update: It’s worth mentioning that limera1n is a bootrom exploit that Apple can’t patch on the iPod touch through firmware alone. The real test of the Dev Team’s wits will be an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2.

RecognizeMe unlocks your jailbroken iPhone using your face, anyone else’s (video)

We don’t often jailbreak our iPhones to test apps, but a facial recognition unlock tool seemed a worthy excuse, so we gave it a shot. RecognizeMe uses the front-facing camera in your iPhone 4 (and iPad 2, eventually) to unlock the phone for its owner. Unfortunately, it also unlocked the device for Brian Heater (center), our resident 900 number enthusiast, and Bianca Bosker, Huff Po‘s tech editor and our only other friend in the newsroom. The app includes a setting for verification threshold, so we played around with that, trying a dozen times to get the app to ignore Brian, but even at 80 percent it was recognizing both of us (65 percent was the cutoff for Bianca). Bumping the threshold up to 100 percent finally locked Brian out, but at that level, the device wouldn’t unlock for anyone, making it totally secure — and totally busted. Verification took a full 25 seconds to timeout (compared to 5-15 seconds to grant access at lower levels, depending on lighting conditions), so using this app requires p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e. At this point, RecognizeMe is a $7 gimmick that might impress your grandmother (assuming she doesn’t ask to try it herself), but if you need to keep your device under lock and key, a tried-and-true passcode is still the way to go.

googletv.pngGoogle TV Unveiled
Google has found their way on to your computer, on to your phone, and now wants to be on your TV. At their conference last week they announced Google TV, which merges your cable/satellite box, your TV, and the web so that it is all managed from one central interface. Sony will be building this into some of their TVs, and Logitech will be making a “companion” box running the Google TV platform… both of which will be on sale this Fall at Best Buy.

hotmail.jpgNew Hotmail Allows for Larger Attachments
From a global perspective Hotmail is the most used email service, but in the U.S. Hotmail is on the verge of giving up their second place position to Gmail (with Yahoo! in first). The new version of Hotmail, due out later this summer, will have a bunch of new features that will make managing your Inbox easier, but the big thing to me is the new attachment limitations. Hotmail will not only allow for 50MB attachments (Gmail is 25MB), but you can attach up to 10GB of files (Gmail is 25MB). That means you can attach 200 files that are each 50MB to an email, or that is equivalent to about 2,000 full resolution digital photos (assuming an average 5MB size). This is made possible thanks to direct integration with your SkyDrive account.

redsn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 works with 4.3.3, still no iPad 2 support

Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, but as it did with 4.3.2, neglected to patch the untethered jailbreak exploit in redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 (since updated to rc15). Looks like that’s a hat trick for the iPhone Dev Team. The hack works with most devices (even the Apple TV), but there’s still no solution for iPad 2 owners — we’re sure that the underground powers that be are hard at work searching for holes that Apple overlooked. Installation instructions remain unchanged, so if you’ve been eager to get your iPhone tracking fix on without bricking your device, grab the latest IPSW and head over to our source link for the download links.
