Libratone’s AirPlay-enabled soundbars want to cozy up with your iOS wares

Been on the prowl for an audio solution with AirPlay to compliment your iDevice or Apple TV? Bid hello to Libratone’s ultra-chic Lounge and Live soundbars. Last year, the company introduced its eye-catching Beat wireless speaker system back at IFA; we were intrigued by its active drivers and carry handle, but mildly disappointed that cord-cutting required pesky proprietary adapters. Apple users will be happy to know AirPlay’s been fully embraced this time, along with the signature adornment of cashmere wool. First up, the Live appears to be an Airplay-enabled Beat with 50 extra watts of RMS power (150 total), and an updated — mini TOSlink accepting — 3.5mm input for hooking up non AirPlay-enabled gear. Next up, the sleek Lounge unit above sports a similar external design and digital 3.5mm jack, but it’s svelte in comparison for wall-mounting under a TV. Under its sheep fuzz, you’ll find two 1-inch ribbon tweeters, two 4-inch ceramic drivers, and one 8-inch inverted woofer, all of which are independently amplified for a combined output of 150 RMS watts.

Poised to please audio enthusiasts, both employ DSP and Libratone’s FullRoom for a “360 degree soundscape” controllable via an iOS app, while the Lounge’s volume can also be handled by a TV remote. The Lounge will be available through Apple’s online store this September priced at £1,099 to €,1199 (about $1,791 to $1,954), and the Live for £599 to £6,99 ($699) at Apple retail locations in the EU and US — both in various colorways. Engadget is live from E3: get your Microsoft and Sony keynote liveblogs right here!

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry’s biggest annual get-together, kicks off in earnest on Tuesday, June 7th. Microsoft and Sony, however, will be getting the party started on Monday with keynotes scheduled for 12.30PM ET and 8PM ET, respectively. You can check out our liveblog posts (linked below) for the particular times in your local region — oh yes, we’re going to be liveblogging the hell out of these keynotes. Considering this year’s E3 will be the place where Nintendo previews the next Wii, the other two console gaming leaders pretty much have to give us something juicy to talk about.

Royal wedding livestream breaks hearts, records

No frogs transformed into princes and no wicked stepmothers were vanquished — not on camera, at least — but today’s royal wedding managed to capture the world’s imagination. Thanks to partnerships with CBS, the Associated Press, UK Press Association, and Entertainment Tonight, the marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton broke viewing records on Livestream.com, maxing out at 300,000 simultaneous viewers and a total of “at least 2 million” unique users, according to Max Haot, the site’s CEO. We reached out to YouTube and Facebook to see how they did on the streaming front, but neither site has a final tally — though a Facebook spokesperson did tell us that 6,819,072 people have commented on the wedding in the past 24 hours. We don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but we hear News Corp. has secured the rights to the Royal Divorce — just in case.

Live from HTC’s April 12th event!

Alright, so the cat may already be out of the bag (thank you, Vodafone!), but HTC still has a swanky London venue booked for today and the show, as they say, must go on. What’s more, there’s no reason to believe the 4.3-inch HTC Sensation will be the only thing announced at today’s marquee event from the Taiwanese smartphone and tablet maker. Xbox 360 Update Preview discs are in the mail

If you signed up the Xbox 360 preview program it’s time to start camping out by your mailbox and pestering your delivery person — the update discs are shipping. A few lucky gamers now have their sneak peak at the next Xbox Live update and free copy of Halo: Reach in hand, and one was kind enough to send us the shot above to prove it. The disc bears a serious warning though: do not try and install it on a non-preview approved system. Doing so will completely disable Xbox Live until the update is officially released, which may be months away. So, if your friend got a disc don’t even think about trying to mooch your way into the beta program. After all, what fun is playing Halo if you’re stuck trying to save Reach by yourself?

Microsoft’s OneVision Video Recognizer can detect, identify, and track your face on video… so smile!

Here’s your classic case of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” Microsoft’s Innovation Labs have just demonstrated a OneVision Video Recognizer algorithm that’s powerful enough to perform face detection duties on a running video feed. It can recognize and track humanoid visages even while they’re moving, accept tags that allow auto-identification of people as they enter the frame, and can ultimately lead to some highly sophisticated video editing and indexing via its automated information gathering. Of course, it’s that very ease with which it can keep a watchful eye on everyone that has us feeling uneasy right now, but what are you gonna do? Watch the video after the break, that’s what.

Gaikai beta goes live, brings Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, Sims 3 and Second Life demos to your browser window

Remember Gaikai, the cloud computing service that lets you demo video games in your browser window without downloading a thing? It’s live, meaning it’s no longer just us tech journalists that get to give it a thorough try. Provided you have a blazing fast internet connection and both Flash and Java installed, four streaming game demos are a just a click (and possibly a survey, or a short wait) away, including three EA titles (Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, The Sims 3) and Second Life. As we discovered in our initial hands-on, it’s not a flawless experience even with a fantastic internet connection, but it’s not meant to be — the entire point is to allow you to adequately sample a game right before making a purchase decision. It’s also a free taste of the future, and you don’t see those every day.
