Verizon further expands LTE network, says it now covers more than half the US population

Verizon’s latest LTE network expansion may be a tad small compared to some previous ones — encompassing 15 new markets, plus some additional coverage in ten existing ones — but it was enough to push the carrier over one significant milestone. It now says that the network encompasses some 160 million Americans, or more than half the US population. As Verizon is quick to point out, that’s a feat it managed to accomplish in just eight months. Head on past the break for the press release with the complete list of markets covered.

Nokia 800 and Acer M310 caught on Windows Phone dev’s stats, likely in testing

The fact that Nokia and Acer are busily preparing Windows Phones is no secret, but Sea Ray and W4 may not be the manufacturers’ only projects. Elbert Perez, a Windows Phone game developer with a keen eye for statistics, was looking through a list of the various devices that run his games, and a couple gems stood out — the Nokia 800 and Acer M310. The plot thickens when realizing that these names have never been seen before. Sadly, such a revelation prompts more questions than answers: are these completely new phones, or just the Sea Ray and W4 with new names? If testers are playing games on them, can we assume these are close to production? But don’t forget the lingering question that won’t ever be answered: are they winning the game?

Apple adding DisplayPort to iOS devices?

Not content with just building offices in the shape of UFOs, Apple is on the hunt for a “Signal Integrity Manager.” That’s an engineer who balances the noise that chips and circuit boards emit — which, if left unchecked could overpower your iOS devices’ data signals. Apple is specifically looking for someone with DisplayPort experience (plus ten years general experience and two years leading a small team) to work on future chip development — like the A6. The move suggests that the standard could be coming in the future, but since the position is still listed, it seems unlikely that we’ll see DisplayPort included with the next iPhone / iPad at this point.

HTC files trademarks for Enamor and Rhyme, keeps on hustlin’

We’ve seen a few leaks from HTC lately, and now we’ve got the scoop on two more. And get this: one is being developed just for aspiring hip-hop moguls! Okay, not really… but a couple of new names were filed with the USPTO last week, as it keeps spittin’ game in the mobile marketplace. Four total trademark applications were filed for the HTC Enamor and HTC Rhyme — covering smartphones and tablets along with their hardware and software cohorts. No specs have been revealed (or much else) as of yet, but if you’d like to scope out the particulars for yourself, hit the source links below.

NYC to trial mobile payment parking system, Lovely Rita looks for a new gig

Tired of burning your hard earned cash on parking fines? You might wanna move to New York City, where the Department of Transportation will soon begin testing a “pay by phone” parking system. The mobile payment technology, which has already been introduced in cities like Washington, DC and Atlanta, essentially allows drivers to pay for their parking spots without ever having to interact with those menacing, metallic meters. After registering online, users would be able to pay for curbside real estate by entering the number of the nearest meter and the amount of time they’d like to purchase into a customized app, or by texting it to the city’s Department of Transportation. The system would also alert users whenever their allotted time is about to expire, allowing them to add more money directly from their handsets, rather than trudge back their cars. At this point, the plan is to roll out the pilot program to some 300 parking spots over the next few months, most likely in outer borough neighborhoods with plenty of commercial outlets and, presumably, automobiles.

Symbian Belle download leaked to N8 community, quickly pulled from site (update: Anna available on NaviFirm)

For a very short period of time there was pure bliss for Nokia N8 users with a knack for tinkering around; Symbian Belle, a coveted update to the still-unreleased Anna, was spotted in a user forum, leaked and available for download. Alas, it was not meant to be, as enough users experienced issues installing the new firmware that the files had to be pulled until it can be resolved. According to DailyMobile, the folks behind the update will try again tomorrow, so anyone interested may want to keep a close eye on it just in case it goes live again. As any other unofficial firmware install, it’s not for the faint of heart; you’ll want to be confident in what you’re doing before you get started. Head below for another eight-minute video.

Update: It looks like Symbian Anna is now available for N8 users, with early variants of the firmware showing up on NaviFirm. No word yet on when V22 will be available via Ovi Suite or as an OTA update, but if you’ve already upgraded, let us know how you’re finding it in the comments.

Motorola’s new Droid HD makes cameo alongside Droid Bionic

We’ve just received a fascinating set of photos from a sharp-eyed tipster, who sent along images of what appear to be Motorola’s Droid Bionic and, most alluringly, that rumored handset known as the Droid HD (pictured above). This isn’t the first time we’ve seen leaked images of the Bionic in the wild, but these shots are certainly a lot clearer than any others we’ve come across. Still, there aren’t too many surprises here, with the global-capable handset boasting a TI OMAP 4430 1GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 4.5-inch display, an 8 megapixel rear camera, and microUSB / HDMI ports.

The real intrigue, however, lies with the Droid HD. Judging from the photos, this device seems to be running Gingerbread, and rocks a 4.5-inch display (presumably with qHD or even 1280×720 resolution, considering the device’s name), an 8 megapixel 1080p rear-facing camera, a front-facing shooter and the usual set of microUSB / HDMI ports. There’s also a pair of side loading SIM and microSD slots on the left side of the device, a volume rocker and what looks like a power button on the right, a slight bump for the camera pod around back (which sports an LED flash and speaker, as well), along with a large, thin battery that appears to be removable. Perhaps most notable about the HD is its seemingly super thin design — we’re estimating it’s between 8.5 and 9mm, which would put it in the same league as Samsung’s Galaxy S II, which measures 8.49mm. We’ll have to wait for more detailed information on this mystery phone, but you can get a closer look right now in the gallery, below.

HP Pre 3 now available for purchase on official European store

Pop quiz: what’s the best way to launch a phone that’s left us waiting with anticipation for seven months? HP’s answer is to quietly release it on its European store without any pomp or circumstance. We have no idea why the company chose to start selling the Pre 3, its new flagship phone, without any media buzz; the important thing here, however, is that the SIM-free device is now available for purchase on the Palm Eurostore. The phone can be all yours for £299 — the equivalent of $490 in the US — which is a respectable price point for a no-commitment smartphone of its caliber. So far we’ve only seen the phone get pushed out across the pond; European retailers Clove and Box are following HP’s lead by offering the Pre 3 as well, just in case the official store runs out of stock. It’s probably not too likely, given the company’s lack of marketing efforts on this particular launch, but we could always be surprised. After all, we’ve been waiting for seven months.

Update: PreCentral just received an official statement from HP confirming that the Pre 3 is indeed launching in Europe, and more information will be available for the US soon. Here’s the full quote:

HP is excited to begin its regional rollout of Pre3, the only phone today that offers users a slide-out keyboard coupled with a large touchscreen and the fastest speed (1.4GHz processor – the fastest on the market). We expect to share additional information for U.S. customers soon.

So that’s it — a four-line announcement to launch the Pre 3. But hey, it’s at least something.

Verizon embraces Google’s Moto Mobility deal, hopes for an end to patent disputes

Android’s always had a best friend forever (or, for the time being) in Verizon. Together, the two companies were able to establish Andy Rubin’s mobile OS as a serious platform competitor, fighting back against the then threat of AT&T’s exclusive iPhone juggernaut with Moto’s Droid. Flash forward to present day and it’s no wonder Big Red’s SVP John Thorne is giving a public-facing, albeit tentative, thumbs up to Google’s Motorola Mobility acquisition. Thorne’s official line on the deal concerns the “stability [it might bring] to the ongoing smartphone patent disputes,” but the executive declined to comment further, citing a lack of known details for the proposed buyout. Certainly, the wireless operator has good reason to keep a close eye on the takeover, as a recent Chitika survey pegs it with a commanding 41 percent share of active Android handsets. So far, only Nokia has come out from behind Microsoft’s shadow, hailing the move as a boon for WP7 and casting shade on Google’s intentions. HTC drags on the patent war, files yet another complaint against Apple

HTC vs. AppleSweet jumping jehosaphat, the patent suit madness just won’t end. Only a month after the ITC sided with Apple and HTC offered a standard-issue plea for cooperation, the Taiwanese company has filed its own infringement complaint against the Cupertino crew. This isn’t the first suit brought by HTC against Apple, and we’re sure it won’t be the last. In fact, the two have a long history of engaging in the most common form of competition for smartphone makers. (Why let your products do the talking when you have high-priced lawyers on retainer?) The three patents at the heart of the complaint cover not just the iPhone and iPad, but also the company’s computer line — in particular WiFi networking features and the combination of PDA and cellphone functionality.
