Hasta La Gadget!

Are you desperate for an iPad-like device, short on cash, and long on the desire to completely jack up your netbook? Well you’re in luck, friend, as the proprietor of MSI Wind fansite Insanely Wind has crafted a device which may satiate your tablety desires. By taking a U100, removing the keyboard, relocating a touchscreen display to the bottom half of the unit, and doing some simple rewiring, user alexbates has fashioned a tablet which he says bests a device like the iPad or JooJoo with “10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader.” Of course, as you can tell by the photos, this mod has a ways to go before it’s got the fit and finish of the aforementioned devices, and you’ll have rev up a compatible, hackintosh build of OS X to make it appropriately Apple-ish — but it can clearly be done. While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this type of modification, it’s nice to see the love spreading to various devices (and done in a fashion that doesn’t seem overly complicated). From the sounds of things, this project hasn’t hit its zenith yet, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for a more complete variation of the Windlet (our name). We don’t know that this requires much more explanation than the title. A couple of rad dudes from the German-speaking parts of Europe have taken up tools against their old titanium PowerBooks G4s and produced the righteous bit of snow-surfing kit you see above. It was done for a competition asking for creative ways to re-utilize old gear, though judging by all the flopping and crashing that ensued in their tests, this isn’t exactly useful. See it on video after the break, and if it really catches your fancy, the PowerBook snowboard can be found on eBay, though no one has been mad enough to bid for it yet.

Engadget reader Martin Schrotz is a man after our own hearts. He’s taken the editors’ choice for best smartphone of 2009 and tricked it out with a handsome new back cover made out of titanium. Not sufficiently pleased with the plastic casing provided by Apple, Martin opened up his favorite CAD program and refashioned his phone into the much hardier and indubitably more awesome machine you see before you. The new backing is built out of a titanium alloy that allows RF waves through and therefore requires no plastic parts to let the wireless communications flow. We’re not sure if an illuminated WiFi-detector window decal is more or less nerdy than the illuminated WiFi-detector T-shirt, but it’s certainly cooler. The shirt costs about $20 now, and the mod to take the electroluminescent WiFi signal detector panel, add the necessary power converter and mount it all to the back your car of seems easy enough if you’re the type to tinker. Now — who’s going to do this, set up a MiFi, and start charging fellow commuters for access? Video after the break.

If you thought only a semi-deity like Ben Heck could splice consoles into laptop-shaped cases, here’s some evidence to the contrary. This week, CollinE from Ben’s forums put the finishing touches to his own, rather professional looking, Xbox 360 laptop. Adorned in a red and black color scheme that features a throwback giant X on the top lid, his 360 stays true to the original console in almost all respects — including the “wind tunnel” noise generated by Collin’s five fans. The fact he also consulted our guide on how to do this is just a cherry on the top for us, and you can find a video tour of the hardware after the break. Should it take your fancy, the machine’s now on auction with all proceeds going to the “make Collin’s Christmas merrier” foundation.
