Pure Music looks to give Spotify a run for its money, but only in the UK

If you’re looking to save a little coin on your Adele streaming habits, Pure Music may be worth a look. Beginning in December, you can have millions of songs at your fingertips for £4.99 (about $8) a month — but only in the UK. Music on-demand, internet radio and other programs will be available for your laptop, iOS device or one of the company’s many WiFi capable devices, all for a monthly sum that’s slightly cheaper than Spotify. Should you make use of the Tag bookmarking system on one of Pure’s radios, you’ll be able to access those highlighted tracks on your smartphone or computer as well. iHome iW1 AirPlay wireless audio system finally available now, again, sort of

Remember back to September 26th when iHome’s iW1 AirPlay speaker was supposed to be available? Curiously, the company’s website continually listed the $300 system as “coming soon” (at least the times we checked), leaving iOS and iTunes users yearning for this cable-free audio ware in the proverbial dust. Now, a full month later, iHome has again announced the release of this flagship wireless speaker, even though it’s still out of stock itself. According to the company, a quick trip to an Apple Store, Best Buy or Crutchfield should let you snag one, although, the latter’s site won’t have any until November 3rd. Here’s to hunting — and waiting for the smaller iW2 and iW3 units to get proper release dates. Full details in the press release after the break.

Lyrics Plugin for Winamp & WMP

When I’m listening to music it is nice to have the lyrics available within the media player so that you don’t have to venture off onto the Internet to hunt them down. So many of the online services bombard you with advertisements and popups, and it becomes more of a chore to find what you’re looking for.

I came across a free plugin today that does exactly what I wanted. It automatically retrieves and displays lyrics in Winamp or Windows Media Player (WMP) for the songs as they are played. I downloaded and installed the plugin for Windows Media Player, and it managed to get the lyrics for a large number of my songs. And I can’t forget to mention the simplified interface that makes reading the lyrics easy.

If you’re a lyric buff I highly recommend you give this a shot!

Oh, Meego, we barely knew ye. Yet, the Finnish OS that could continues to shower us with glimpses of what might’ve been… more widespread, that is. At least we have the consolation prize of seeing your host hardware, the N9, effortlessly display its untapped powers of NFC. Shown off here in a demo taken at the just wrapped Nokia World, that tap-to-pair functionality we’d previously seen in HP’s webOS devices and, more recently as ICS’ Android Beam, bridges the blue polycarbonate slab to a Play 360 speaker by a mere gentle swipe. That’s all it takes to send tracks from Nokia’s Music app direct to the Bluetooth peripheral’s curvature continuous form. Like what you see? Spotify comes to MeeGo to help keep your N9 company

Good news, Spotify is offering itself up to the MeeGo gods, bringing its music streaming services to the slick handset by way of the Nokia Store. Westone’s 4 R-Series quad-driver IEMs pack Acoustic Symmetry, cost $500

Remember those impressive Westone 4 in-ear monitors that came out late last year, priced at a whopping $450? Well, the company’s ready to best itself again — and have audiophiles open their wallets a bit wider — with its new 4 R-Series. This latest set is relatively similar to the 4, still packing Westone’s EPIC cable (now detachable) and four balanced armature drivers, but will set you back an extra fifty bucks in the name of Acoustic Symmetry. Westone claims the ‘phones achieve an “extremely tight tolerance of +/- 2dB between earpieces,“ meaning your sound should be extra consistent from both buds. The 4 R-Series buds are expected to arrive before the year’s out, so in the meantime we’ll just direct you to the PR past the break.

Ask Engadget: best AirPlay speakers for travel?

“I am looking for some AirPlay-enabled speakers that I can use to travel with. They should support 110 to 240 volt and have WiFi built-in so I don’t have to carry around an AP. Also, it would be cool if this WiFi could connect to the hotel network, if possible. Thanks!”

PS Vita’s Twitter app shown off in Hong Kong, we go hands-on (video)

Here’s a little souvenir for Twitter addicts eyeing the upcoming PS Vita: at today’s debut event in Hong Kong, we got to see said console’s Twitter app in action for the very first time, and we were also fortunate enough to get some exclusive hands-on time with Sony’s in-house software. As you can see in our video after the break, the overall design feels very much in line with Twitter’s standard ID: the same shade of blue, the usual tabs on the left column, slick elastic scrolling in the timelines, and support for geotagging, hash tags plus photo attachment while tweeting. No surprises here, but hey, the app worked well for us.

That said, we were told that the app wasn’t quite finished yet, and Sony still couldn’t confirm whether this — along with the other dedicated apps like Skype, Foursquare and Facebook — will be ready for download by the time the Vita launches in Hong Kong on December 23rd (just a tad later than Japan’s launch on the 17th). In case you’re wondering, the Vita there will cost HK$2,280 (US$290) for the WiFi version and HK$2,780 (US$360) for the 3G flavor, both unsubsidized but cheaper than their Japanese counterparts. Of course, given that the console isn’t region-locked, feel free to go do some shopping in Hong Kong then — just save some for the locals, OK? Feats Per Minute record playing bike helps you kickstand out the jams (video)

If you’re like us, you spend most of your waking hours attempting to figure out a way to enjoy your vinyl collection on the go. Feats Per Minute offers a simple and handy solution, incorporating a turntable onto the rear wheel of a bicycle — you spin the record player as you ride, and the sound plays out of an old timey horn on the back. There were a few obstacles to overcome: like getting the record to play vertically and making sure the needle skips as little as possible while riding the thing. As evidenced in the video below, the team managed to overcome these problems. However, you have to maintain a constant pace if you want the record to play right, of course — and as for the record itself, we recommend staying away from, say, that mint condition copy of The Velvet Underground’s first LP. It may not travel well.

Sony Music Unlimited arrives for Android tablets, bearing gifts of unlimited music

It’s been a week of upgrades for Sony Tablet S owners. First came news of the PlayStation Store’s arrival and now comes confirmation that Sony’s Music Unlimited service is available, as well. Yesterday, the company announced that its music streaming service has finally made its way to the Tablet S and other Android slates, a little more than four months after launching on Google-laced handsets. The basics remain the same: $4 per month for a basic subscription or $10 per month for premium service, though Tablet S owners can take advantage of a 180-day free trial, in case they still have their hesitations.
