AT&T adds Samsung Go to netbook lineup, dumbs it down with Windows 7 Starter

AT&T just added a pair of Windows 7 Starter netbooks to its stable, and while we’ve got nothing against the Samsung Go and the Acer Aspire One, we just can’t help but feel preloading 7 Starter makes the already-dubious subsidized netbook value proposition even worse. Let’s break it down: both the Go and the Aspire One will set you back $199 upfront (well, after mail-in rebate), and then you’re on the hook for two-year data contract, which will cost you either $35 a month for a 200MB cap or $60 a month for a 5GB cap. Now, $35 a month for 200MB of data is basically worthless for a netbook — that’s what, a half-day of watching YouTube? — so assuming you do what most people do and buy the $60 plan, you’re out at least $1,639 over two years for last-gen netbook hardware running a gimped OS that doesn’t even let you change the desktop wallpaper. Not exactly a screaming deal. We’d say you’re much better off finding a netbook with XP on sale and just getting a regular free-on-contract USB data card, which you’ll be able to use on multiple machines — or, if you absolutely must have Windows 7, holding out for the coming flood of Pine Trail netbooks at CES, which we’re hoping will come preloaded with 7 Home Premium.

Lenovo IdeaPad shown to possess Pineview CPU by FCC photo shoot

Remember that Pine Trail fast-tracking we were talking about? Yeah, it’s for real. Intel’s latest submission to the FCC reveals details of a new member of Lenovo’s IdeaPad netbook range, and is the first confirmed sighting of the Pineview processor every netbook diehard has been waiting for. The documentation suggests an S10-3 moniker for the new 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 machine, which is likely to pair up that Atom N450 with 2GB of RAM and 250GB of storage. Click past the break to see the sticker with all the specs on it, and do make your voices heard in the comments below regarding that buttonless touchpad — a Synaptics ClickPad, perchance?

Menq’s $80 EasyPC E790 netbook runs Windows CE now, should run Android later (video)

Don’t be fooled by that background: this Menq EasyPC E790 is only using Windows CE 5.0 for the sake of this hands-on. The successor to the $89 E760 we saw last year still sports a Samsung ARM processor, bumps the 7-inch display’s resolution to 800 x 480, and at least as far as this Techvideoblog video hands-on shows, can do a decent (albeit not great) job of handling DivX files, Skype, and browsing. There’s a promise from the manufacturer that Android is coming sometime in the next month, but honestly, given what we’ve seen before, we’d be happy to stick with Windows CE. Of course, the big selling point here is the price, and that claimed $80 is quite the looker. Video after the break.

Dell Mini 9 modded into motion sensitive, touchscreen tablet (video)

True, this ain’t the first Dell Mini tablet hack we’ve laid eyes on — but what we do have here is a pretty sweet mod by MyDellMini forum member “rock99rock” (must be his confirmation name). In addition to replacing his Dell Mini 9 display with a touchscreen kit, our man re-jiggered an ActionXL motion sensing controller to allow the screen to rotate as you rotate the device. Not bad, eh? Hit that read link for some real radical instrucciones — but not before checking out the enthralling video after the break.

Litl Easel Webbook gets the extensive hands-on treatment (video)

Wait a minute — you say you’ve been longing to get your hands on an overpriced netbook that you can use upside-down? Well, kids, the time is drawing nigh. Mere days after the Litl Easel Webbook went official we’ve become privy to a lengthy video of the bad boy in action. Indeed, things are as you expected: a 1.6GHz Atom-based machine running a proprietary web-optimized OS, this guy has been specially designed, in the words of the company’s CEO, to do away with “the computery stuff.” To that end, users will see no icons or folders in the desktop. Such tried-and-true stalwarts of computer interface design have been eschewed for “web cards.” Indeed, you won’t be able to overlap or resize windows at all, at all: unless you’re in easel mode, in which case you scroll through cards one at a time with a wheel. But there’s more! Users may “liberate the photo” in a manner not unlike a digiframe the fraction of the cost, thanks to the device’s integration with several photo-sharing services (including Shutterfly and Flickr). Still curious? I bet you are. Hit up the video after the break and prepare to have all of your dreams fulfilled (well, maybe not).

HTC ‘carefully looking’ into netbook category, wants to add ‘unique value’

Oh, HTC — never one to dodge the chance to keep us on edge, are you? Half a year after we heard that the self-proclaimed “quietly brilliant” company was working on an Android netbook with T-Mobile, HTC’s own CEO Peter Chou confessed during a recent interview that those very wheels were still turning. During the frenzy that was the HD2 launch, he quipped that his company was still “carefully looking into [the netbook] category and how it can be part of that,” noting that nothing was official yet due to its desire to really add “unique value” rather than punching out another “me-too” machine. ‘Course, if Intel really does revamp its Atom lineup at CES, we’d say this is just about the perfect time for the company to come out swinging — after all, you know you still find yourself dreaming about the Shift from time to time.

Intel purportedly fast-tracking Pine Trail platform, forgetting all about N270 / N280 at CES

Say it with us now: “freaking finally!” The world at large seems perfectly fine with using Atom N270 and N280 CPUs for the rest of eternity (judging by the latest netbook sales figures, anyway), but techies like us are sick and tired of dabbling with the same underpowered chips and the same lackluster capabilities. At long last, we’re hearing that Intel will supposedly officially announce the Pine Trail platform in late December, with a raft of netbooks based around the new Pineview chips hitting the CES show floor in January. The 1.66GHz Atom N450, dual-core 1.66GHz Atom D510 and Atom D410 are expected to be all the rage at the show, with the existing N270 and N280 making an expedited trip to the grave. Good riddance, we say.

ASUS delivers Eee PC T91MT to Amazon.com, completes world tour

It was only two weeks ago when the ASUS T91MT — the first-ever Windows 7 convertible netbook — dropped by Amazon’s German site, and now the Eastern wind from Taiwan has finally reached US soil. Amazon.com buyers are offered pretty much the same configuration as their European counterpart: Intel Atom Z520, 8.9-inch multitouch swivel screen, 1GB RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium. While there’s only one color option available for now, those who’re cool with white will be spoiled with a 32GB SSD — twice as much as the German version yet $200 cheaper. Any students out there going to pick one of these up for some improved note-taking before Christmas exams?

[Thanks, Bernard]

Best Buy stocking Nokia’s Booklet 3G on November 15th

We knew good and well that Nokia’s Booklet 3G was coming to Best Buy sometime “during the holidays,” and now we’ve got something a bit more precise to share. Starting now, Reward Zone members can waltz into their local store and place a pre-order, while public availability is pegged for November 15th (though we already know that a select few have ’em in stock). As we’d heard, the 2.76-pound, Atom-powered netbook will be sold for $299.99 with a 2-year AT&T data contract or $599.99 straight-up. Oh, and if you’re looking to get your order in early, we’d recommend printing out that image above just so you don’t baffle anyone with your otherworldly request.

Lenovo IdeaPad U150 gets unboxed and critiqued (video)

We spotted the IdeaPad U150 sitting pretty as far back as CEATEC, but now it seems the 11.6-inch beaut is finally finding its way out into the wild, wild… wilds. The suave folks over at Netbooked were able to wrap their paws around a retail unit, and aside from just unboxing it on video (which was a nice gesture in its own right), they also ran it through some basic tasks and spit out a few general opinions. Hit the links below if you’d like to follow the journey from undressing to battery life testing, and hop on past the breaks if you’re into this hot new thing called “video.”
