You’ve heard of the Special Victims Unit, but what about the Social Networking Unit? The time has come for criminals dumb enough to boast about their exploits on Facebook and Twitter to pay the proverbial piper. According to NY Daily News, the Big Apple’s newly minted Assistant Commissioner, Kevin O’Connor, will enlist the department’s juvenile justice unit to hunt down ne’er-do-wells on various social networking sites. So remember, even if your friends don’t care about the Cookie Puss you just posted to your Facebook page, somewhere out there someone is watching.

It’s one thing for Fifth Ave. to get clogged up each time a new iPhone or iPad gets released, but Grand Central Terminal? Avid NYC commuters best plan their vacation days accordingly, as one of the city’s biggest transit hubs is about to get a heck of a lot more busy — and not because White Plains is the new Southampton. The New York Post is reporting that Apple and the MTA have agreed on a decade-long deal that’ll see a 23,000-square foot Apple Store take the place of Charlie Palmer’s Metrazur restaurant, with Cupertino’s rent to be set at $800,000 per year (rising to $1 million after ten years pass). For those curious, that’s around $500,000 more than the eatery before it, and Apple’s responsible for refurbishing the space. That cacophony of voices you hear? Touristy cheers drowning out local jeers.

There’s a war on in New York City. The lines of loyalty were drawn way back in 1898 and, ever since, it’s been battle for borough superiority. A team of hackers has ushered this county rivalry into the internet age, turning the Big Apple into a giant Risk board where check-ins replace dice rolls and armies are gathered on Foursquare. In World of Fourcraft users pledge fealty to a particular locale then, for the honor of their homeland, check-in to wrest control of neighborhoods from their residents and defend their own turf from potential usurpers. The whole project was whipped up last weekend during a hackathon at New York’s General Assembly. At the moment it does little more than tally check-ins, but the creators plan to add new features in the future. Now, go forth and do battle for your block but, don’t stray too far — to the north and east of the Boogie Down Bronx, and the south and west of the Slums of Shaolin, lies The Waste Land.
