White PS3 coming to Europe and Australia in November

There’s nothing a like an (almost) fresh and exciting color variant to make us totally forget about the PS4. Besides, this little dazzler will come with a 320GB HDD and two equally white Dualshock controllers, which means you’ll only have to spray-paint your PS3 Move, headset, external drive, wheel and eyebrows to match. Look out for it at GameStop in the UK, Germany and possibly other Euro nations too, as well as at Electronic Boutique in Australia from November 1st — or just pre-order via the source links below.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play 4G hitting AT&T on September 18th for $50 on contract

We knew good and well it was coming, and come it has. Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play has made the natural GSM shift in the States in order to grace Ma Bell’s airwaves, and despite the “4G” naming convention, this fellow will be topping out at HSPA+. In other words, LTE lovers will need to look elsewhere. This marks the first launch of a PlayStation-certified smartphone for AT&T, and given that it’s been around the block a time or two, the carrier is (smartly) pricing it at just $49.99 on a two-year contract — a buck-fifty less than what it launched for on Verizon Wireless. As we’d heard, it’ll ship with Android 2.3.3, a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, a 4-inch display (854 x 480) and will arrive in an exclusive ‘stealth blue’ hue. AT&T customers will also be blessed with a gratis Multimedia Dock (DK300) and MC100 music cable, not to mention seven pre-loaded games at no charge. Full details on that are hosted up after the break, and interested consumers can line up to grab their own on September 18th.

Sony’s golden NINOKUNI ‘Magical Edition’ PlayStation 3 heads for Japan, Criss Angel’s mind

Not that Sony’s PlayStation 3 hasn’t been touched by Midas before, but this is the first time we’ve seen the new(ish) form factor doused in such official fashion. Per usual, it’ll be the homeland that’s treated to the NINOKUNI Magical Edition PS3 console, a decidedly wizard-approved bundle that’ll include a copy of Ni No Kuni. The only edition available will boast a 160GB hard drive, a single Dual Shock controller and a glorious icon on the lower-left of the machine. It’ll be available in Japan this November for ¥33,780 ($440), but only in “limited quantities.” So much for magic that lasts forever, huh?

Sony officially renames the S2 the Tablet P, opens up about the software (video)

Compared to the S1 tablet — make that the Tablet S — Sony’s dual-screen tab remains something of an enigma. AT&T hasn’t said how much it’ll cost on contract, nor do we know when it’ll finally go on sale. Still, the tablet just get one step closer to becoming a real, shipping product, with Sony renaming it the Tablet P, as rumored, and clarifying the full range of specs — namely, that it weighs in at 0.82 pounds and runs a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 SoC with twin 5.5-inch (1024 x 800) displays, dual 5MP and VGA cameras, an HSPA+ radio, a 3,080mAh battery, a full-sized SD card slot, 4GB of internal memory, a micro-USB socket and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those displays use the same TruBlack technology found in Sony’s Bravia TVs, promising blacker blacks and whiter whites. What’s more, Sony is opening up about the software, a topic it pointedly ignored when we first handled the hardware, then codenamed the S2. For starters, by the time it ships, it’ll join the ranks of a growing number of tablets (most of them 7-inchers) running Android 3.2. And guess what? We recently sat down with the Tablet P a second time for a preview of how the outfit’s optimized Honeycomb for those dual displays. Here’s what to expect.

Sony redesigns PlayStation Home, makes it the game outside the game

Sony updated PlayStation Home in the spring of this year, and gave its virtual world multiplayer support and better graphics. Evidently that update wasn’t quite what Sony wanted, so the company will roll out a complete redesign of the community this autumn to make it easier for folks to connect with desired content. The revamped Home lets users find games by exploring several themed districts (Action, Adventure, Sportswalk and Pier Park) with their digital doppelgängers. Sony’s saying the changes will make PlayStation Home itself a game, so maybe it’s time for Second Life to start shaking in its boots. Denizens of Sony’s digital world can get more details in the PR below.

N-Control’s Avenger for PS3 begins pre-sale, officially debuts November 8th

Been just a teensy bit jealous of your 360-owning, Avenger-toting friends? Well, Playstation owner, that resentment ends now — sort of. Having promised a DualShock 3 version by the end of 2011, N-Control’s gone and soft launched its controller appendage with a limited production run before it officially goes on-sale. Apparently only 5,000 of the $48.99 extras will available early, which means you’ll have to act quick to get one. Those of you missing the pre-sale will have to wait until November 8th, when it’ll hit retailers alongside the release of Modern Warfare 3. In the interim, hit up our review of its Redmond-friendly relative to see the gaming greatness that awaits you.

PS Vita to pack 512MB of RAM, support cross-game voice chat

What’s the difference between Sony’s PlayStation Vita and the PS3? About 256MB of RAM, apparently. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the forthcoming handheld will boast a full 512MB of RAM (compared to the PS3’s 256MB), allowing the Vita to support cross-game voice chat via its Party feature. Yoshida’s confirmation effectively debunks earlier rumors that Sony would be halving the Vita’s RAM, in order to compete with the 3DS’ lower price, though the console does feature comparatively less V-RAM (just 128MB, versus the PS3’s 256MB). According to the executive, however, that disparity won’t make too much of a difference on the gaming experience, due to changes in the Vita’s display resolution. “The resolution on the PS Vita screen is much lower,” Yoshida said. “Even though it’s four times the resolution of PSP, compared to the console, the amount of data you have to push is much smaller.” The proof, of course, is in the pudding, but unfortunately, we probably won’t be tasting it for a while.

PlayStation Vita getting social networking apps, ‘winning’ hashtag making a comeback next year

Wondering how you’ll be able to most efficiently brag to far away friends about your new PlayStation Vita? Sony’s got the answer in the form of newly announced apps for its next generation portable. Vita Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and Skype apps will be landing in the PlayStation Store in Japan before the end of the year. The US and Europe will get their shot at the free apps in early 2012.

Update: It is unclear whether the apps will be available when Vita launches. The above dates are actually for the device itself.

Sony drops PS3 price to $250 in US, €250 in Europe

Sony just wrapped its Gamescom 2011 keynote with this juicy nugget: base PlayStation 3 models will run you just $250 in the US, €250 in Europe, and ¥24,980 in Japan. Announced at the same show two years ago with a $300 price tag, the base PS3 Slim model includes a 160GB hard drive. A lower price will provide a nice cushion for that $299 Call of Duty: Black Ops bundle, which just hit stores earlier this summer. Meanwhile, the 320GB model will see a $50 drop as well, with new pricing for both models kicking in immediately in the US and Europe, and August 18th in Japan. Sony also lifted the curtain on a €99 (about $140) budget PSP model, which adds a slick new design while dropping WiFi functionality. Because, really, who needs their handheld console to connect to the web? All that internet gaming stuff was so 2011.

PS3 firmware update v3.70 adds auto-save cloud storage for subscribers, updates XMB and 3D support

As if saving your PS3 games to the cloud wasn’t convenient enough, Sony’s gone and automated the process for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The v3.70 software update offers an automatic sync option for trophies and game save states, giving members exclusive access to their gaming goods wherever they go. The firmware also packs a few additional features for non-paid users, adding a recommendation function to items in the PlayStation store, and a new “TV / Video Services” XMB category for Netflix, Hulu PLUS and VUDU apps. Sony’s also thrown in a few 3D tweaks, with MPO format compatibility for photos, and support for Java-based special features and DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR audio output for 3D Bluray movie playback. Although the gaming giant hasn’t announced an official date for the release, expect it to hit your home console soon.

Update: Joystiq’s reporting that the update has just gone live.
