Coby’s netbooks seemingly real, taking pre-orders

Sure — we haven’t seen or heard anything about Coby’s netbook line since way back in January at CES, but that didn’t stop them from showing up for pre-order, did it? Color us a little surprised, but here they are. Two models have appeared on Amazon for pre-order. The 12.1-inch Coby NMPC1220XPBLK apparently boasts a 1024 x 800 resolution, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive, while the NBPC1022XPBLK is a 10.1-incher with identical specs. The first runs $423, while the 10.1-inch model is $318. So tell us: will you be ordering one?

Popcorn Hour C-200 launch nearly upon us, preorders start tomorrow

As you may have noticed, the new Popcorn Hour C-200 media box didn’t quite make its anticipated July launch, but the company now says that as of 12 a.m. PST August 27, pre-orders will open allowing the willing faithful to put in a request for the first batch, anticipated to ship September 3 or thereabouts. Don’t remember the June announcement? The $299 Sigma powered box takes HDD, Blu-ray discs, USB or network inputs of nearly any video or audio codec available and brings them to your living room. Since then, pics and video of the units guts and interface have leaked out on the forums, check after the break or beyond the read link for a better look.

PS3 Slim shipping on August 26th, says Amazon

It looks like there might be a trend brewing among products with nondescript September release windows coming out in August instead — first with Apple, and now with Sony. Supply shortages or no, Amazon’s telling those who pre-ordered the PlayStation 3 Slim the first day it was announced should expect to have their consoles in-hand on Wednesday, August 26th, almost a whole week before the new month begins. Delivery estimates are subject to change, of course, but Amazon’s not one to typically screw around with shipping confirmations. Any other early adopters received confirmations lately?

[Thanks, Devin!]

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic up for $290 preorder on US site

We’d figured the 5530 was destined for markets around the globe where 2G still dominates, so imagine our pleasant surprise to see that good ol’ Nokia USA is as amped as anyone to start selling the company’s new low-cost S60 5th Edition device. This leaves potential buyers in a doozy of a dilemma, though: most retailers are now selling the 5530’s big brother, the 5800, for under $300, which makes the $290 sticker for a 3G-less version pretty hard to swallow. On the flipside, the 5530’s unquestionably the more attractive phone and the updated home screen is going to leave 5800 owners insanely envious. It’s a tough call, and it’s not a call we’d want to have to make — one of each, perhaps? There’s no shipping date listed on the preorder, but for your patience Nokia’s awarding you with an MD-8 stereo Bluetooth speaker if you order online — just pony up your $289.99, pick the white or black version of the phone, twiddle your thumbs, and don’t be shocked when the New York and Chicago flagships get stock before you do.

[Thanks, Oscar M.]

Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim stand gets pictured… all $24 of it

See that up there? That’s the all-new, not-yet-on-sale PlayStation 3 Slim’s stand. It works by laying flat on whatever surface you deem fit, and then it holds your new gaming console upright. We get the impression that it’ll do its job fairly well, but the $24 retail price is borderline insulting. Or, it’s just the motivation you needed to craft one on your own and prove that you were indeed born with a few DIY genes — it’s all about perspective, folks.

Handcrafted Ceramic Speakers are almost too pretty to blast

Joey Roth blew our collective minds way back in 2007 with his conceptual Felt Mouse, but now the designer is taking his creations to the next level by actually shipping a few. The simply named Ceramic Speakers boast only 10 watts of output per channel, though each 4-inch full-range driver is housed in an acoustically dead porcelain and cork chamber that should do quite a lot with quite a little. We can’t say we’re totally fond of the expected $400 to $500 price tag when these go on sale in October, but toss in a similarly designed subwoofer and we just might bite.

Microsoft’s Zune HD AV Dock and Power Pack up for pre-order

No need to hide your unabashed love for Microsoft — we know you’ve already plopped down a few bills to pre-order your Zune HD, but did you bother sinking a few Jacksons on high-margin accessories? If not, we’ll have you know that the Zune HD AV Dock (left) and Zune HD AV & Power Pack (right) can be pre-ordered right now from Microsoft’s online store as well as through Amazon, and we suspect most every other respectable e-tailer will pick ’em up soonly. Both devices are expected to ship alongside the device itself on September 15th, with the former including a dock, three inserts, wireless remote, AC adapter, HDMI cable and AV output cable for $89.99. The latter is meant to pipe content from your docked Zune HD onto a TV, as it includes an AC adapter, HDMI cable and AC output cable for $49.99.

[Thanks, Thomas]

Bluetooth-enabled Modula therapy lamp changes color via cellphone

Details are exceedingly light (almost dangerously light, in fact), but the Modula color therapy lamp is simply too soothing to overlook. The three-ringed lamp is built with a slew of multi-color lights (LEDs, we’re guessing), all wired up to be controlled via Bluetooth. The video demonstration shows a Sony Ericsson W880i doing the dirty work, but there’s no indication of how exactly end users are supposed to accomplish the color changing once it arrives. Those in the camp of “buy now, ask questions later” can get their pre-order in through the read link, but considering that only an EU-friendly 230V version is currently available, those on this side of the pond will need to invest in some serious converters to make it all compatible. The pain? Just €199 ($281) for hours upon hours of endless entertainment.

DJ Hero Renegade Edition now accepting callers, lists for $199.99

So how badly do you want that metallic DJ Hero turntable? The game’s official website is now directing your attention to GameStop and Amazon, both of which are now accepting pre-orders for the Renegade Edition (due to launch October 27th alongside the standard bundle) for just one copper Lincoln under $200. That’s a $80 premium over the regular bundle but does also include a stand / carrying case hybrid and a two-CD collection. Then again, it’s also well over the cost of the entire instrument bundle for Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour. Anyone gonna bite?

[Thanks, HArry]

Parajet SkyCar flying vehicle evolves, now ready for pre-orders

The historians once pontificated that we’d all be cruising about in flying cars right around the year 2000, and while that whole Y2K fiasco threw us a tad behind schedule, it looks like the future may actually still be upon us. Parajet, the same company responsible for that downright unnerving personal flying machine we peeked back in ’05, has now placed its long-awaited SkyCar up for pre-order. Said vehicle has evolved quite dramatically over the years, but now that dollars (er, pounds) are being dropped on it, we have to assume that the design is near final. The vehicle is completely street legal and can accelerate to 62mph in just 4.2 seconds, thus making it the world’s first “usable, road-legal flying car.” If you’re champing at the bit to be the first on your block with one, you can drop £10,000 ($16,381) now and pay the remaining £50,000 ($81,905) just before it ships in “late 2010.” Of course, we’re not making any promises about it actually shipping, but that’s a risk you’ll have to take.
