Gemini-Scout robot can scope out mining accidents, may save lives (video)

We’ve seen robots capable of entering hazardous nuclear plants and dangerous buildings, but engineers at Sandia Labs have now unveiled a new rescue bot that’s explicitly designed to enter and investigate collapsed mines, as well. Measuring just two feet tall and less than four feet in length, the Gemini-Scout Mine Rescue Robot packs a set of gas sensors, a thermal camera and a two-way radio, allowing it to detect dangerous underground materials and relay critical information to above-ground rescue workers. Its can also navigate across rocky terrain, tight quarters, or flooded tunnels, and is sturdy enough to carry food and other supplies to trapped miners. Operators, meanwhile, can manipulate the Gemini-Scout using only an Xbox 360 controller, which was incorporated into the system on the strength of its intuitive design and UI. Sandia’s engineers demoed their bot last week in DC and are hoping to begin licensing it to rescue agencies by the end of next year. Wrist sensor turns the back of your hand into a meaty haptic interface (video)

We’re all intimately familiar with the backs of our hands, so why not use them as a haptic interface to control our gadgets? That’s the idea behind the device pictured above — a nifty little wrist sensor that turns your paw into a flesh-toned trackpad. Designed by Kei Nakatsuma, a PhD student at the University of Tokyo, this contraption employs infrared sensors to track a user’s finger as it moves across the back of a hand. These movements are mirrored on a wristwatch-like display, thanks to seven IR detectors and a set of piezoelectric sensors, effectively turning any digit into an organic stylus or mouse. Nakatsuma, who unveiled his work at this week’s SIGGRAPH, says his creation can’t handle the more complicated, pinching or rotating gestures you could manipulate on most smartphone touchscreens and acknowledges that the screen can be difficult to read in direct sunlight. But the underlying technology could pave the way for similarly handy designs, while allowing users to interact with their gadgets without having to constantly glance at their screens, or go fishing in their pockets. Microsoft’s KinectFusion research project offers real-time 3D reconstruction, wild AR possibilities

It’s a little shocking to think about the impact that Microsoft’s Kinect camera has had on the gaming industry at large, let alone the 3D modeling industry. Here at SIGGRAPH 2011, we attended a KinectFusion research talk hosted by Microsoft, where a fascinating new look at real-time 3D reconstruction was detailed. To better appreciate what’s happening here, we’d actually encourage you to hop back and have a gander at our hands-on with PrimeSense’s raw motion sensing hardware from GDC 2010 — for those who’ve forgotten, that very hardware was finally outed as the guts behind what consumers simply know as “Kinect.” The breakthrough wasn’t in how it allowed gamers to control common software titles sans a joystick — the breakthrough was the price. The Kinect took 3D sensing to the mainstream, and moreover, allowed researchers to pick up a commodity product and go absolutely nuts. Turns out, that’s precisely what a smattering of highly intelligent blokes in the UK have done, and they’ve built a new method for reconstructing 3D scenes (read: real-life) in real-time by using a simple Xbox 360 peripheral.

The actual technobabble ran deep — not shocking given the academic nature of the conference — but the demos shown were nothing short of jaw-dropping. There’s no question that this methodology could be used to spark the next generation of gaming interaction and augmented reality, taking a user’s surroundings and making it a live part of the experience. Moreover, game design could be significantly impacted, with live scenes able to be acted out and stored in real-time rather than having to build something frame by frame within an application. According to the presenter, the tech that’s been created here can “extract surface geometry in real-time,” right down to the millimeter level. Of course, the Kinect’s camera and abilities are relatively limited when it comes to resolution; you won’t be building 1080p scenes with a $150 camera, but as CPUs and GPUs become more powerful, there’s nothing stopping this from scaling with the future. SoftEther’s sensor-laden QUMA robot demonstrates poses, intimidates your acting coach (video)

A solution in search of a problem, or a solution to a problem that you were too proud to cop to? SoftEther has just revealed what might be the final blow to Barbie’s distinguished career: the sensor-splashed QUMA. So far as we can tell, the human-shaped puppet contains a myriad sensors to pick up precise bends and flexes, and then pipes that information to a screen. Aside from showing your team of ballerinas exactly how their routine should look, we’re guessing that the real future here is in far more sophisticated tasks — things like artificial intelligence, major motion pictures and scientific research. Researchers use graphene to draw energy from flowing water, self-powered micro-robots to follow?

What can’t graphene do? The wonder material’s been at the heart of a stunning number of technological breakthroughs of late, and now it’s adding oil exploration to its long list of achievements. A team of researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have discovered that the flow of good old H2O over a sheet of graphene can generate enough electricity to power “tiny sensors” used in tracking down oil deposits. The gang, led by professor Nikhil Koratkar, was able to suck 85 nanowatts of power out of a slab of graphene measuring .03 by .015 millimeters. The little sensors the researchers speak of are pumped into potential oil wells via a stream of water, and are then put to work sniffing out hydrocarbons indicative of hidden pockets of oil and natural gas. Of course, that doesn’t have a whole lot of practical application for your average gadget consumer, but Koraktar sees a future filled with tiny water-powered robots and micro-submarines — we can dig it.

Plick hitches an elastic ride on the DIY robotics train (video)

Man, we hope Gumby’s collecting some royalty checks for this one. One part incredible-stretching toy, and one part DIY robotics kit, the Plick project takes the traditional hobbyist approach to brick-building your own bot and slaps a little rubber all around it. The industrial design prototype from Brazilian engineer Gabriel Paciornik combines programmable robotic parts with an elastic wired connection suitable for strapping your mad scientist creations to everyday objects. So, what can you make? The kit packs a variety of sensor-based circles that react to distance and sound, giving your mod-jobs the power of movement and light. It’s safe to say this not-for-market toy veers far from LEGO Mindstorms NXT territory — and that’s exactly the point. Far out video demo and its 60s beach music soundtrack after the break.

Navy tests bacteria-powered hydrogen fuel cell, could start monitoring your underwater fight club

Microbial fuel cells aren’t exactly new, but microbial fuel cells scouring the ocean floor? Now that’s an initiative we can get behind. The Naval Research Laboratory is currently toying around with a so-called Zero Power Ballast Control off the coast of Thailand, presumably looking for treasures dropped from the speedboat of one “Alan Garner.” Purportedly, the newfangled hydrogen fuel cell relies on bacteria to provide variable buoyancy, which allows an autonomous ocean sensor to move up and down water columns with little to no effort. Furthermore, it’s able to get its energy from microbial metabolism (yeah, we’re talking about hot air), and while it’s mostly being used to measure things like temperature and pressure, it could be repurposed for more seirous tasks — like mine detection. There’s no clear word yet on when America’s Navy will have access to this stuff, but if we had to guess, they’ve probably be using it behind our backs for the better part of a score.

NC State builds self-healing structural stress sensor, moves on to other alliterative projects

“Sensor, heal thyself,” goes an old saying, and North Carolina State University researchers have given it a new spin. Structural stress monitors can break during, say, an earthquake or explosion: just when you most need information about a building’s integrity. So the NCSU crew added a reservoir of ultraviolet-curable resin; if their sensor cracks, the resin flows into the gap, where a UV light hardens it. An infrared light, which does the actual monitoring, then has a complete circuit through which to pass, and voila: stress data flows once more, aiding decision-makers. Obviously we never tire of UV-reactive gadgetry, especially for making safer buildings, and we’re doubly glad to see self-healing that doesn’t involve the phrase “he’s just not that into you.” To see the self-repair in action, check the picture after the break, and hit the source link for more info.

KDDI’s Swing navigation system helps you find your way around a store, avoid human interaction

GPS can help you get to your favorite bookstore, but once you’re there, it probably won’t find that Thomas Pynchon book you’re looking for. That’s where KDDI’s Swing navigation system comes in. Taking its cue from Nokia’s Kamppi and NAVTEQ’s Destination Maps services, the prototype is designed to help smartphone users find their way around malls, restaurants or any other indoor space, using only a red arrow as their compass. Just choose the section of the store you’re looking for, wave your phone in a circle and KDDI’s app will use a system of pre-installed sensors to find your location, before pointing you in the right direction. Seems intuitive enough, but Swing’s success will ultimately depend upon how many people and retail outlets decide to adopt it. Swing past the break for a demo video.
