Apple to release cheaper, 8GB iPhone 4 within weeks?

As the world waits for Apple to release the iPhone 5, Reuters is reporting that Cupertino may be refreshing the iPhone 4, as well. According to two anonymous sources “with knowledge of the matter,” an unnamed Korean manufacturer has already begun producing parts for a cheaper, 8GB version of the smartphone, slated to launch within the next few weeks. As for that next-gen handset, the insiders went on to say that the iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 will feature a more spacious touchscreen, better antenna and eight megapixel shooter, and that Apple is indeed aiming for a late September launch, after having already asked manufacturers Hon Hai and Pegatron to prep their facilities for the production of 45 million units, altogether. Details, as usual, are still scarce at this point, but we’ll let you know as soon as we get more information.

ERPLY’s mobile credit card reader handles NFC payments on an iPad, obliterates the check-out line

It may look like nothing more than a glorified chip clip, but that dongle at the bottom of this guy’s iPad is actually ERPLY’s new credit card reader — the latest addition to a growing field of NFC and mobile payment devices designed for small and large businesses. Once attached to an iPad’s charging port, the peripheral will send a user’s encrypted credit card information to ERPLY’s point-of-sale and inventory management software, allowing customers to purchase products on the store room floor and giving retailers the ability to monitor transactions and stock flows in real time. Available for $50 (with a transaction fee of 1.9 percent), the reader is also equipped to handle both NFC and traditional card payments and, after processing a purchase, will automatically send a receipt to consumers via text or e-mail. At the moment, it’s only available for the iPad, though iPhone users should be able to get their own version within the next three months. Oppo’s Android-based X903 smartphone gets previewed

We didn’t exactly get the most extensive look at Oppo’s new Android-based X903 smartphone when the company announced it with Leonardo DiCaprio’s help earlier this month, but our pals from Engadget Chinese thankfully managed to come through on that front in a big way. As you can see, the phone’s brushed metal exterior certainly makes this one an eye catcher, although that apparently also contributes to a weight that’s a tad on the heavy side (there’s also a full QWERTY keyboard tucked underneath, albeit one that apparently suffers a bit from some short key travel). Those trade-offs also extend to some of the phones specs; you’ll get a high-end 4-inch IPS display, for instance, but you’ll have to make do without a front-facing camera. Fossil’s Meta Watch delayed once again, clearly has trouble keeping time

If you were planning on outfitting your arm with a new Meta Watch this month, you’re out of luck, because Fossil has just announced that the wristpieces won’t start shipping until September. The watches, which use Texas Instruments’ CC2560 Bluetooth controller to sync with smartphones, tablets or desktops, were originally scheduled for a July launch, but that timeline was eventually pushed back to August, due to part delays. Now, manufacturers have discovered a new batch of issues with the devices’ programming clips (used for micro USB connections) and the analog-digital version’s steel case, meaning that the pair won’t reach Hong Kong distributors until the beginning of next month, after which they may take another one to two weeks before shipping to consumers. The countdown clock continues to tick away, but you can still pre-order a Meta Watch for $200, at the links below.

Sony Ericsson unveils Live with Walkman handset for music-loving Android users

Four months after unveiling the relatively bare bones W8, Sony Ericsson has now taken the wraps off yet another Walkman phone, known as the Live with Walkman. Powered by a 1GHz processor, this Android handset features a 3.2 inch, capacitive touchscreen (with somewhat disappointing HVGA resolution), a five megapixel AF shooter with 8x digital zoom, and a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing HD video in 720p. The petite, Gingerbread-equipped device also packs a lackluster 320MB of RAM, provides up to 32GB of microSD storage, and offers either tri-band 3G support (HSPA+) at 850, 1900 and 2100MHZ, or dual-band 3G at 900 and 2100MHz, depending on the model. And, as you’d expect, Sony Ericsson has placed a special emphasis on the music phone’s media capabilities, beefing it up with enhanced audio and Qriocity integration. The specs may not sound earth shattering, but we’ll wait until we get pricing information before casting judgment. All Things D: HP kept executives in the dark about webOS decision

If you thought the saga surrounding HP’s decision to cease production of webOS devices was over, you may be mistaken. All Things D reported yesterday that key executives — specifically Todd Bradley of the currently-in-limbo Personal Systems Group and former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein — weren’t informed of the move until Sunday night. The blog’s inside sources say the two plan to remain at their posts for the time being, however, that could change dependent on what happens next with webOS. Those sources also noted that Rubinstein wasn’t exactly thrilled about the timing of the TouchPad’s release, saying CEO Leo Apotheker had failed to make good on a public promise to ship the tablet only when it was “perfect.” So will they stay or will they go? It’s anyone’s guess at this point, but you can bet we’ll keep you posted.

HP TouchPad fire sale spurs online sell out, brick-and-mortars may still carry stock (updated)

It’s the same old story of genius recognized only after death, and thus is the fate of webOS. If you were amongst the opportunistic hordes scavenging the interwebs for last night’s bargain bin $99 HP TouchPad announcement, chances are you’re fresh outta luck. The L.A. Times is reporting widespread online store sell outs for the recently abandoned and heavily discounted 16GB and 32GB slates. While HP’s own site and the biggie online retail outfits, like Circuit City and Walmart, have all but sold out of their web inventory, Amazon’s third party sellers still have the tablets on offer — just at non-discounted prices. Of course, you could always leave the hypnotic glow of your monitor and venture out into the real world where actual, physical stores are purported to have the tabs currently in stock. Update: We’ve been hearing reports that select Best Buy outlets have begun selling their remaining inventory as of this afternoon. Also, it appears RadioShack plans to get in on the discounted fun, as leaked internal memos indicate an impending price cut. If you haven’t had any luck snagging one of HP’s also-ran tabs, now’s your chance.

Samsung Galaxy Precedent coming to Straight Talk, seemingly $150 off-contract (video)

Walmart and its MVNO partner, TracFone, are preparing to plunge into the shallow depths of Android with the Samsung Galaxy Precedent. While little is known about the device itself, it appears strikingly similar to the Samsung Prevail, from the chunky volume rocker and external microSD card slot on the side of the phone, to the absent flash on the rear. Of course, Straight Talk’s primary selling point with the Precedent is the price itself, which — according to a promo video for the device — is said to be just shy of $150 off-contract. This, combined with Wally World’s competitive pricing of $45 per month for unlimited voice, text and data, could be a boon for many users who rely on Verizon for coverage (assuming this is a CDMA phone, anyway).
