MSN Messenger Plus Updated

MSN Messenger Plus Updated

If you are a current MSN Messenger user then you will love Messenger Plus. It adds a ton of functionality to MSN Messenger, and many features that you would have never thought you needed. Unfortunately, the most recent release is still not compatible with Windows Live Messenger but a compatible version should be released in May.

The only major changes this time is in the sponsor agreement. This software was once very tricky at getting people to install ‘additional software’ with the installation. However, because of rising complaints they have made it easier for users to opt-out of installing the sponsor’s software. They have always given the choice to install the sponsor’s software or not to install it, but when Messenger Plus was originally released they made it much more tricky.

Since you are able to install the software without adware or spyware then I highly recommend that you use this software. Once you grow accustomed to it then you won’t know how you survived without it (a little exaggeration :D ).

DVArchive 3.2 Released After 2 Years

DVArchive 3.2 Released After 2 Years

It has almost been 2 years exactly since DVArchive was last updated. Version 3.2 brings some bug fixes, improved stability, and most importantly it is compatible with Java V1.4.2 AND ABOVE. DVArchive 3.1 always required that you were running Java V1.4.2 on your computer which quickly became a hassle.

If you haven’t heard of DVArchive before then you probably don’t own a ReplayTV. DVArchive is a piece of software that you install on your computer and lets you manage almost everything on your ReplayTV. I use it all the time for scheduling shows, and the greatest thing is that you can remotely access DVArchive from the Web so you can schedule a show no matter where you are. If you are a ReplayTV user then this is one piece of software that you need.

Unfortunately ReplayTV is moving away from the set-top boxes and installing their DVR software right onto computers. I like the idea of having a computer do the work but it is also nice having a dedicated box that will do everything. The most beneficial thing about using a computer would be the ability to easily upgrade certain components like the hard drive capacity. It will be interesting to see how customers react in September when the new service launches.

HTC starts OTA Gingerbread updates for Desire HD and Incredible S

It’s true, it’s true. HTC is today extending some tender loving care to owners of the Desire HD and Incredible S handsets in the form of an over-the-air update delivering Android 2.3. We’ve seen the notice of the new firmware update on the company’s European support site, though our UK-based Incredible S has yet to be pinged with a refreshing dose of Gingerbread. Shouldn’t be long now, though! That just leaves the Desire Z and original Desire, both of which should be joining the party by the end of June.

1 Million Copies of Safari for Windows Downloaded

This article was written on June 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s been just four days since the public could get their hands on Safari for Windows.  Ryan reviewed Safari earlier this week and noted the features that it has to offer, as well as some of its shortcomings including security concerns.

Yesterday Apple announced that during the first 48 hours since it was available, more than 1 million copies of Safari were downloaded. That is pretty impressive considering some of the bad rap that it’s gotten. Perhaps it’s because this was an unexpected move from Apple which generated a lot of buzz, and so everybody wanted to check it out to see what it’s all about?

Apple sounded pretty happy with the number of downloads, but I’m not sure whether that number is a good or bad thing. There have been many problems with it already, and now one million people have already formed their opinion of the browser and may not be willing to go back and try it again after Apple corrects the problems and releases it out of beta.

I’m sure there are also many curious developers who wanted to get their hands on it, which is beneficial to Apple anyways. The more developers that start working with it, the more applications we’ll see made available for the iPhone which Apple is betting on to be the breadwinner.

Apple has already released an updated version, Beta 3.0.1. that includes security improvements. If you haven’t yet downloaded it, or you’d like to get the updated version, you can download that here. (Thanks for the tip Cory!)

Full Circle Magazine Issues #2 & #3

This article was written on July 27, 2007 by CyberNet.

Full Circle Magazine covers CompizI don’t know how, but I missed the release of Full Circle Magazine issue #2 which was available a month ago. So I thought today I would write a combined post that covers issue #2 as well as #3 which was just released.

Full Circle Magazine is a user-created magazine designed for Ubuntu Linux users. It normally includes how-to’s, guides, and a look at what you can expect from Ubuntu (and some of its siblings like Kubuntu). So let’s see what the two newest issues bring to the table:

–Full Circle Issue #2 (JPEG / PDF)–

One of the cool things that I learned from this issues is that there is an Ubuntu Home Server in the works which aims to compete with Windows Home Server.

I’ve converted this issue into a JPEG image for those of you who don’t want to download the PDF. Here’s a quick overview of what issue #2 has in it:

  • Flavour of the Month – Kubuntu
  • How-To
    • Ubuntu on the Intel Mac Mini
    • Virtual Private Networking
    • Learning Scribus Part 2
    • Ubuntu for your Grandma!
  • Review – System 76 Darter
  • Top 5 – Widgets
  • MyDesktop, MyPC and more!

–Full Circle Issue #3 (JPEG / PDF)–

This issue previews a few of the new Compiz Fusion effects (this is the result of Beryl and Compiz merging together). There wasn’t as much news on this as I would have liked to see, so I thought I would throw in this video to demonstrate what Compiz Fusion can do:

I’ve converted this issue as well into a JPEG image for those of you who don’t want to download the PDF. Here’s a quick overview of what issue #3 has in it:

  • Xubuntu install step-by-step – Alternative Disc
  • How-To
    • Get a Stunning Ubuntu Desktop
    • Learning Scribus part 3
    • Ubuntu in Photography
  • Review of Ubuntu on a Macbook
  • Preview of several new Compiz Fusion effects
  • Letters, Q&A, MyDesktop, MyPC, Top5 and more!

Overall it looks like the magazine is doing really well, and the last few releases have met their deadlines perfectly. I can’t wait to see what issue #4 has in store for us on August 31st! :)

BlackBerry PlayBook to get Video Chat and Facebook apps in May (updated)

Who’s going to get the very first “tablet-optimized” Facebook app? Why, it’s RIM and the PlayBook! The Canadian company has today revealed it’s bringing a native Facebook app to its 7-inch, QNX-based slate, which will also be joined by a new Video Chat application. The latter will be available to download on May 3rd, with an over-the-air update dishing it out to current PlayBook owners. Its functionality will be no different from what we’ve come to expect from such clients — both voice and video calls will be available anywhere you can find a WiFi connection. As to the Facebook app, it’s coming some time later in the month, and will let you view and add your friends, share photos and videos “seamlessly,” access Facebook Chat, and view and interact with the news Feed. Both should be getting extensive demos at BlackBerry World, which is taking place this week, and we’ll be sure to have a gander and report our findings. Skip past the break for the full press releases.

Update: Well, that was quick — looks like Facebook for PlayBook is already up for grabs, and Canadian Reviewer has posted several screenshots for your amusement.

RIM announces BlackBerry 7 OS with better browser and BlackBerry Balance, but no legacy support

The BB OS 6.1 update that grew too big for its name has just been made official by RIM as BlackBerry 7. Its ambassador into the wide world of smartphones will be the newly minted BlackBerry Bold Touch, which is expected to arrive “this summer.” What can you look forward to? The user experience is promised to be both easier and faster, voice-activated searches are available for content both on your phone and the web, and the browser has been “significantly enhanced” with new features like a JIT (just-in-time) JavaScript compiler and HTML5 Video support. BlackBerry Balance is also part of the new OS, allowing you to compartmentalize your personal and professional lives into neat and separate piles of content. Full PR can be found after the break.

Update: RIM has just noted that there will be “no legacy support” with BB 7, meaning that older devices, even those running version 6 of the OS, won’t be getting any (official) updates to the latest stuff. This has been justified by how tightly integrated the software build is with the underlying graphics hardware in the touch-capable Bold handsets. Basically, the old phones won’t be able to run the new OS. Oh, and in case you were wondering, there’s no trace of QNX in BB 7.

Microsoft Is About To Release Windows Live Writer

This article was written on August 12, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Is About To Release A Writely CompetitorMicrosoft is all about Office productivity software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. It looks like they will continue on that path because there is some speculation that on Monday, August 14, Microsoft will be releasing Windows Live Writer to the public.

So what is Windows Live Writer? My first thoughts was that it was going to essentially be an online version of Microsoft Word and similar to the Zoho Writer or Writely. According to a user at Neowin it is going to be a downloadable application:

This new product from Microsoft will allow a user to write documents/blog postings from a downloadable application called Windows Live Writer and post them to a blog (other than Windows Live Spaces). Right know, we have no other known features, except Spell Check, of this product until Monday the 14th.

The small image above is supposed to be a screenshot from Windows Live Writer but it could also be from a version of Windows Live Mail Desktop. If it has blogging capabilities then I guess you could say that it is WordPad on steroids?

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Release Date in 10 Days!

This article was written on October 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

Leopard Spaces Apple has finally decided to inform the public about the official release date of the acclaimed Leopard operating system, and it’s in just 10 days (on October 26th). Lines will surely form outside of the Apple stores, but I would imagine that there will be more than enough copies available.

What’s new in Leopard? Apple has detailed over 300 new features that will be shipping in the latest version of their operating system. I went through the entire list and grabbed the things that I thought were the most notable:

  • Boot Camp – run Windows on your Mac, and copy files between the two operating systems
  • Desktop – semitransparent menu bar, reflective Dock, organize files into “stacks,” and more
  • Finder – use the sidebar to group items into categories, flip through your files with Cover Flow, icons contain previews of files, and more
  • iChat – use Photo Booth to add effects to your video chats, tabbed chatting, file transfer manager, and more
  • Mail – includes stationary templates, to-do list manager, improved search, photo browser, RSS integration, notes, and more
  • Parental controls – simple account setup, time limits and bedtimes, web filters, remote control, and more
  • Quick Look – preview files without launching an application
  • Safari – enhanced find, full history search, resizable text fields, and more
  • Spaces – these are like virtual desktops, and you can drag and drop applications from one space to another using the Bird’s-Eye View
  • Time Machine – backs up all of your files in case you need to retrieve something that has been removed

Starting October 26th you’ll be able to pick up your copy of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard at an Apple retail store for only $129! That’s quite a steal, but the even better deal is the $199 household license that covers up to five computers. If you bought a new computer after October 1st, 2007 you qualify for the free upgrade. You will, however, have to pay a $10 shipping fee to get it.

Engadget also mentioned that the Boot Camp Beta will not expire until the end of 2007 for Tiger users, and until then you’ll be able to add/edit your Windows partitions. After that time you’ll still be able to run Windows, but you won’t be able to manage the partitions without making the upgrade to Leopard.

Lifehacker has also started a poll wondering what feature is making you lust over the upcoming operating system.

Thanks for the tip CoryC!

Panasonic Viera AR Setup Simulator app augments the reality of your TV dream (video)

A cardboard cut-out, really? You pasted a 50-inch rectangle of stiffened paper to the wall in order to preview the flatscreen of your dreams within your new Vitsoe shelving system? For shame. A true nerd, nay, a real man would have cast aside those arts and crafts for Panasonic’s new Viera AR Setup Simulator app. Just grab the wall or pedestal AR marker from the printer and place it wherever you hope to showcase that new Panny. Then watch the app augment your reality through the iPhone’s camera. Don’t cost nothin’ but your time, starting with the 60 second video embedded after the break.
