Hasta La Gadget!

Remember the HTC Glacier spotted in a database a few months ago? Neither did we, but it’s back and eating most every other smartphone’s pixel-pushing lunch. Here it is at number four on the GLBenchmark Pro 1.1 charts, where only one variant of Samsung’s Galaxy S and a pair of Tegra 2 tablets managed to keep it from claiming the top spot. AlienBabelTech, who found the entry, believes this is evidence the device has one of the new Snapdragon dual-cores, and though we won’t speculate that far, a series of coincidences point to a T-Mobile launch (and a bout of logic has us worrying about battery life) if or when it hits our shores.

So, how do you feel about the look of this myTouch 3G HD we’ve been seeing this week? Haven’t formed a complete opinion yet? Well, maybe this new shot — seemingly of said phone’s backside — will help. As we’ve seen on past models, the rear features a tastefully-sized myTouch logo, lending a dose of credibility to the picture that seems to have been covertly snapped off a monitor where the render was being shown. In other words, we don’t have much reason to doubt this thing — and considering that the Vibrant isn’t a member of the myTouch line, T-Mobile’s overdue for a refreshed non-QWERTY Android device in that segment of the market. Should be an interesting few months for these guys, no?

And just like that, the T-Mobile G1 is no more. A quick stock check at T-Mobile USA, Amazon, and a few other retailers confirms that the world’s first Android handset is no longer for sale, marking the end of an era. Of course, it’s been nearly two years since we first saw the G1, and its 528MHz Qualcomm processor and 320 x 480 3.2-inch display have been long since outclassed by the recent crop of high-end Android hardware, but we’re still feeling a little nostalgic. They grow up so fast, don’t they? Take a pause, take a sip, and let’s look back on the original of the species.

It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen this here BlackBerry (with “this here” meaning “Curve 9300“), but it’s the first time we’ve seen it outfitted in carrier clothing. Notice that T-Mobile logo at the bottom? That’s the clearest indication yet that this particular ‘Berry will soon be headed to T-Mob, but given that it’s unlikely to support an upgrade to BlackBerry OS 6, your off-the-chart excitement level may indeed be unwarranted. At any rate, we’re also hearing that Rogers in Canada will be snagging this at launch, but we’ll be passing along official details just as soon as we get them.

Update: As it turns out, this actually isn’t the first time we’ve seen a magenta-scarved Curve 9300, just the one that has us most convinced it’s got a date with destiny. Not to mention stateside availability.

We’ve got to hand it to Samsung with its Galaxy S line. Coordinating the launch of a single family of devices across all four national US carriers (plus a regional or two) is a feat very rarely accomplished, and usually reserved for really unique handsets that those carriers wouldn’t be able to effectively source from anyone else; HTC’s Touch Pro2 is a prime example of that. Add to that the murky issue of exclusivity periods… and, well, yeah, Samsung definitely has reason to be proud here — on the business end of things, anyway. Never mind the awesome contractual maneuvering that undoubtedly took place to make this all happen, though — we all know that it’s the hardware (and software) that really counts. Today we’re looking at the first two models of the American run, the Captivate for AT&T and the Vibrant for T-Mobile; Verizon’s Fascinate and Sprint’s QWERTY- and WiMAX-equipped Epic 4G are still forthcoming, though we expect the Fascinate to be largely similar to these first two.

Beyond their simple appeal as sexy, high-end Android phones, what makes the Captivate and Vibrant especially interesting is that they are actually their respective carriers’ only high-end Android phones at the moment. In other words: if 1GHz processors and high-res AMOLED displays are how you roll, these are basically the only game in town if you’re on AT&T or T-Mobile — particularly now that Nexus One sales are winding down. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s have a look.
