Twitter suspends UberTwitter and Twidroyd for ‘violating’ its policies

Without elaborating, Twitter has just posted a help document titled “I’m Having Problems Logging In to UberTwitter or twidroyd” that gives little hope for an immediate fix: turns out the company has outright suspended both apps — among the most popular Twitter apps for the BlackBerry / iPhone and Android platforms, respectively — for “violating [its] policies.” They go on to say that they suspend “hundreds” of apps on a daily basis for policy violations, but decided to call out these two in particular because of the high number of users potentially affected. Considering the popularity factor, we imagine this’ll be solved one way or another before too long — but in the meantime, you might want to fall back to the official apps for all three platforms.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Detroit Will Get a Robocop Statue Thanks to the Internet

Thumbnail image for robocop.jpg

Earlier this month, a man, who describes himself as a random dude from Massachusetts and not a mountain, tweeted “@mayordavebing Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky’s butt. He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit.” The Detroit Mayor promptly responded with “@MT There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.”

Just when it looked like all hopes for a glorious Robocop statue were dashed, the Internet took the matter into their own hands. A Kickstarter page, Detroit Needs a Statue of Robocop, quickly popped up, in attempt to raise the necessary money for the statue. And it succeeded! It gathered $55,583 from 1,848 Internet users. To help entice donations, they offered different prizes for the different levels of pledges, ranging from a Robocop Detroit Pin, to free drinks (in Detroit), to a RoboCop Detroit t-shirt. Score!

“Part Man, Part Machine, All Crow Funded!” Now to build the perfect monument to Robocop and find the ideal location (particularly in a area with heavy crime?). Thanks, Internet!

Is it Ever OK to Leave Voicemail Anymore? [Etiquette]

The ubiquity of voicemail made sense when our phones lived in the kitchen, not our pockets—before SMS and twitter and the dozens of other ways we now stay perma-connected. So when does it make sense to use voicemail? More »

Rinspeed BamBoo electric concept is world’s largest HTC Flyer dock

Talk about your cross promotions. The Rinderknecht-built Rinspeed BamBoo concept electric car looks to be the stuff of a gadget nerd’s dreams. Unfortunately, that dream resembles a dystopian nightmare envisioned by a Neal Stephenson novel whereby everything we own is sponsored, trivial, and slathered in corporate logos. But hey, it’s just a concept, and production vehicles never look like the original idea so anything goes… and we mean anything. To start with, the breadbox-inspired dash features a Siemens VDO display with a docking station in the glovebox for the new HTC Flyer tablet. The BamBoo dash is flanked by flowery JBL GreenEdge speakers and the starter key is styled after a Swiss army knife. And if we’re not mistaken, there’s a webcam extended off a stalk from the center of the dash. An interesting piece of work right on down to the cluster of old school throw switches for the wipers, lights, hazards, etc. But that’s just the cockpit.

The radiator grill has been replaced by an internet-connected “identiface,” developed by Daimler subsidiary MBtech, whereby the occupant can display any number of messages to onlookers from Facebook or Twitter, for example, or even the radio station preset you’re currently jamming. The inflatable rear seats are removable as is the inflatable waterproof roof developed by Tecnotex that doubles as a beach blanket. The whole kit is powered by a 54 kW electric motor capable of a 120km/h top speed and battery capable of pushing the sporty golf cart some 105 kilometers before requiring a recharge from an RWE intelligent charging station. Look for it to make its big reveal at the Geneva Motor Show. Until then, head over to Autoblog to feast on their gallery of images with a few choice shots added below.

[Thanks, Tim]

Twitter CEO shoots down talk of a Twitter-branded smartphone before it starts

Think Twitter’s going to follow Facebook and lend its brand to a smartphone? Think again. Twitter CEO Dick Costello said during his Mobile World Congress keynote yesterday that while he does see a need to better integrate Twitter into existing platforms for phones, he sees no need for a Twitter-branded smartphone. Costello cited the ability to take a picture on an Android phone and automatically tweet it as an example of that integration he’d like to see, and further added that he would like to see “more single sign-on experiences,” and “more apps that can tweet without having to go to another app.” Interestingly, Costello also revealed that 40 percent of all tweets come from mobile devices, and that fully half of all active Twitter users are active on more than one platform.

P.S. We should note that Costello seems to have overlooked the trailblazing TwitterPeek, along with everyone else.

Microsoft shows off WP7’s future with multitasking, Twitter integration, and IE9, all coming this year

Microsoft shows off Windows Phone 7's future with multitasking, Twitter integration, and IE9, all coming this year

We’ve just barely begun to get ready with Steve Ballmer’s keynote at MWC 2011, yet the company’s Twitter and press feeds just scooped its main man. It’s confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is getting multitasking for third-party apps and a suite of other updates, including Twitter integration and IE9 Mobile. We’re still waiting on details on the multitasking, but the company has confirmed a “new wave of multitasking applications” in this next release, though hopefully that means open to all.

Twitter will be integrated into the People Hub, so you can get your real-time “what’s for dinner” updates right there. And, of course, Microsoft confirmed IE9 is coming. It’ll deliver a “dramatically enhanced web browser experience” thanks to graphics and hardware acceleration that’ll make the most of what your handset has to offer. Sounds tasty to us. We’re told to expect the update in “early March,” which isn’t that far away at all.

Twitter’s Trending Topics of the Week: Gaga, Bieber, Puppies, and More

puppy bowl.jpg

This week we celebrated the births of two of history’s greats, Jules Verne and Thomas Edison, with two really cool Google Doodles. We also lost Thin Lizzy’s legendary guitarist Gary Moore. The rest of Twitter was buzzing with the lighter things in life, such as the Puppy Bowl, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga. We rounded up the most buzzed-about topics, and compiled a nice, easy-to-read list for you.

Here are the top trending Twitter topics for the week ending on February 11:

1. SuperBowl
The Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl XLV, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Arlington, Texas. Besides talking football, Twitter users created trends about Super Bowl ads, the Black Eyed Peas half-time show, and Animal Planet’s popular Puppy Bowl. #superbowl

2. Puppy Bowl
The only thing better than the Super Bowl? The Puppy Bowl, of course! The Animal Planet hosts a Puppy Bowl every Super Bowl Sunday. This was Puppy Bowl VII, and, as usual, it features puppies playing on a miniature football field, a water-bowl cam, being generally adorable, and, this year, a blimp operated by hamsters. #PuppyBowl

3. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga released her newest single, “Born This Way,” on Friday, February 11. She also reached eight million Twitter followers and is still the most-followed user on Twitter. #LadyGaga #BornThisWayFriday

4. Gary Moore
The legendary Belfast-born guitarist Gary Moore (ex-Thin Lizzy) died in his sleep last Saturday night, while on holiday in Spain. #GaryMoore

5. I Don’t Understand Why
People are tweeting about things they don’t understand. For example, #Idontunderstand why this is such a huge meme.

Check out the rest of the list after the jump!

Nokia’s Elop responds to Google’s ‘Two turkeys’ tweet

Like it or not, you have to hand it to Stephen Elop, Nokia’s new CEO. The man isn’t afraid to shake things up and clean house to meet his vision of the future. And now that he’s made Windows Phone 7 Nokia’s “primary smarphone platform” in what he sees as a three-way race between Microkia, Googloid, and Apple (sorry HP and RIM), the man’s free to unleash his mild-mannered Canadian fury upon Google’s Vic Gundotra (via proxy). As you’ll recall, Vic insulted the rumored partnership earlier in the week by tweeting, “two turkeys do not make an Eagle.” If you don’t understand Elop’s twitter-burn then we urge you to visit one of Dayton Ohio’s fine historical museums while eating a slice of Cassano’s pizza — we hear it’s delicious.

[Thanks, Jack]

New Android for Twitter makes it easier to seach tweets

twitdroid.jpg
There’s a new version of Twitter for Android phones, and even though it doesn’t really make the process of tweeting that much easier, it adds a lot of new ways to search through what everyone else is tweeting about.

Among the changes in Twitter 2.0 for Android are the introduction of universal search, as well as opening up search functions without signing into Twitter. Previously, the app required you to have an account to even browse through the Twittering trends.

When you are signed in, you’ll see a new notification bar at the top where it’s simpler to see direct messages and new tweets/alerts. And finally, the last major update is that it automatically syncs your address book with Twitter matches. So, if you have Joe Smith, joesmith@joesmith.com, in your address book, and Twitter recognizes that name and matching contact info, you’ll get to see Joe’s tweets automatically.

The update is available now for virtually all Android users.

Twitter updates Android app, we go hands-on in more than 140 characters

If you’re an avid Twitter user and an avid Android smartphone user, you’ve been waiting for this day. The day where those developers at Twitter’s headquarters man up and release a Twitter app that can seriously compete with the likes of TweetDeck, Twidroid, and HootSuite. Well, fellow tweeters, it appears that time has come — the official Twitter Android 2.0 app just hit the Market and it includes a pretty drastic UI overhaul, some bug fixes, and a few more key features.

Naturally, we hit the update button as soon as it popped up on our Droid 2 Global, and we have to say the first thing we noticed was the speed increase — our feed loaded quickly and jumping over to the different columns was snappy. Speaking of those columns, Twitter wiped the previous, overly-cutesy main homepage for four tabs that run along the top of the screen — there’s your regular feed, mentions, direct messages, and lists. It feels more like the iOS app, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. You can still pull-to-refresh and swipe left or right over a particular tweet to respond, retweet, or favorite it. So, what’s the best improvement? Besides the tidied up interface, we have to say it’s the auto-complete for usernames — punch in the @ symbol and start typing a name and you’ll get a list of suggested names. Twitter’s also improved the search functionality, but we’d suggest checking that out yourself. It won’t cost you a penny, we just hope you’re running Android 2.1 or higher. Nope, not even Twitter is safe from the evils of fragmentation.
