Windows 7 Demo Not too Exciting

This article was written on May 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

Last night at the D6 conference both Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer sat down together for an interview. We’ve got two highlight videos from the conference below, and there were actually some interesting things brought up. What’s even more surprising is that there were some jokes being thrown around.

Before we get into that we wanted to bring some attention to the multi-touch Windows 7 interface that was demoed. Despite being rather tight-lipped on Windows 7 Microsoft decided to show off a glimpse of what’s in store for the future operating system, but it didn’t go any further than the multi-touch capabilities. My question is whether people are actually looking for multi-touch capabilities in a laptop? The Tablet PC market never really seemed to explode like Bill Gates said it would, and I don’t think that on-screen multi-touch laptops are going to do any better. Sure there will be a chunk of the population who will find it useful, but the hardware required will probably fall outside of the price range for general consumers. Take a look at this video demonstration by Microsoft and give us your opinion:

And as you can see in that video there is not a drastically new interface in Windows 7 like those pictured over at Crunchgear. In fact the credibility of their “screenshots” has already been smashed. All of them are clearly mockups (apparently not even done by Microsoft), and some even look like they date back to the Longhorn days.

If you’ve got 12-minutes to kill here are the highlights from the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs interview, and they are worth watching in my opinion. The first video covers their chat about the history of Microsoft, and the second half focuses on current/future developments.

Update: Electric Pig have been told that the PPV option will be left off the table for console streamers.

Pranks: Best Scary Surprise Pop-Up Videos on YouTube

scaryvideo.png

Halloween is fast approaching! And you know what that means? That’s right, being a jerk.

In today’s multi-media age, is there any better way to punk your friends and loved ones than sending them a scary pop-up video? You’ve received them before: an innocuous YouTube link with simple directions along the lines of “Dude, check this video out–keep the sound turned way up.” The link leads to some seemingly average clip, but at some random moment, a decomposing hell demon jumps out and you spill your coffee all over your keyboard and swear to never speak to that friend again. But then you clean up and email it on to everyone on your contact list.

And the cycle of YouTube terror continues.

We went through the creepiest corners of the internets to find the finest examples of pop-up scary. We even took the extra step of telling you exactly when the zombie attack is coming. That way you can avoid the scary for yourself, while making others in your social circle poop their pants.

So, have some fun at the expense of those closest to you. They’ll all surely appreciate the fact you decided to include them in your Halloween festivities.

Scary’s after the jump.

(Have any other good ones? Leave the links in the comments)

Analytics for YouTube Videos Launches

This article was written on March 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

One of the most useful tools for us as owners of CyberNet News is Google Analytics because it gives us a great idea of where our visitors are coming from, what time of day they visit, and how long they stay for. This information helps us in numerous ways, and it’s hard to imagine not having it available to use. Just as we like to know details of our readers, YouTube contributors have wanted this same type of information as well. Finally YouTube has launched analytics for YouTube videos called YouTube Insight.

YouTube Insight is for those who contribute to YouTube whether it be advertisers or those who upload videos to the site. This new statistics program will provide video uploaders with all kinds of more detailed information so that they know where their viewers are coming from and how many times a movie has been viewed in particular countries. Advertisers are also getting this information which could potentially help draw new advertisers to the service and new advertisers mean more revenue for Google and YouTube.

An example of how this information could be useful is for a band. They could use the information that they gather to help plan stops on a tour. If they get a lot of views on their video from several geographic areas in particular, then they know where to go. YouTube insight will count the number of times a user starts a video, although they won’t know how many actually finish it. Geographic information comes from IP addresses.

To view the new YouTube Insight information, just click “About this Video” which you’ll find by clicking “My Videos.” An example of the information is found below.  Notice that there are two tabs of information, “views” and “popularity.”

youtube analytics

The popularity tab will provide information about how long it took a video to become popular, and just how popular it is compared to other videos during a specific time period. To some up the benefit of YouTube Insight, we’ll quote Tracy Chan, the product manager for YouTube. He says:

Insight gives the creators an inside look into the viewing trends of their videos on YouTube, and helps them to increase views and become more popular. Partners can evaluate metrics to better serve and understand their audiences, as well as increase ad revenue. And advertisers can study their metrics and successes to tailor their marketing — both on and off the site — and reach the right viewers. As a result, Insight turns YouTube into one of the world’s largest focus groups.

Compiz Fusion Stackswitch: Another Application Switcher

This article was written on June 20, 2008 by CyberNet.

compiz fusion stackswitch.jpg

Compiz Fusion on Linux has definitely received a lot of attention because of their innovative thinking, and the latest thing to come out of their lab is a plugin called Stackswitch. To put it simply it is an application switcher, but it comes packed with pizzazz. Once it’s activated it angles all of your windows so that it appears as though they are laying flat on a table that’s sitting in front of you, and the window you currently have selected stands up straight to draw more attention. Some aspects are also configurable, such as the angle at which the windows lie down.

As you might recall Compiz Fusion has already cloned Vista’s Flip-3D and Mac OS X’s Expose features. The Flip-3D feature is called Shift (video demo), and the Expose clone is called Scale (video demo). Stackswitch has its benefits over both because all of the windows are visible at the same time, and it’s more compact.

There’s one thing that I’m dying to know though… is this something you would actually use, or is it merely one of those things that you show off to your friends? Personally the thing that I still find myself using the most for switching between applications is Alt+Tab (or Command+Tab on a Mac). Take a look at this video demonstration of the new Stackswitch, and let us know whether you would ever use something like this:

Five Best Cats with iPad Videos

catwithipad2.png

Cats have been bestowed with an inordinate amount of web presence in relation to their position in the world. For whatever reason, technology LOVES cats! But do cats love technology? Do they even know what technology is? These are the important questions of our time.

First off, let’s establish that cats are dumb. Real dumb. How-have-you-managed-to-survive-as-a-species dumb. Point to something, a cat will just smell your finger. Try and call a cat into the room, they won’t come? Know why? Because cats don’t know what their name is. Cats have a habitual psychotic need to constantly mark their territory–even if they’re the only cat that’s in the house. They are defending their territory from nothing.

Cats are idiots.

So, you can only imagine what must be going on in those big vacuous fuzz faces when they come across the Steve Job’s magical touch screen device, the iPad. From the point of view of a cat, the iPad is an enchanted window to a world that they can never enter. But yet, they are able to directly interact with the sounds, colors, and objects that exist so tantalizingly close right behind the magical barrier. Sometimes the shapes and characters behind the window travel off screen, seeming to evaporate from the Universe? Where did they go? The whole concept creates an unbridgeable gap in cat logic, causing an overload of both panic and wonder in the feline brain.

So, of course, cats being the internet’s favorite muse, there has been a vast documentation of the cat vs. iPad phenomenon. We’ve sifted through hours of dumbfounded felines attacking koi that can never be eaten, stalking angry birds that can never be caught, and wreaking havoc on magical disembodied pianos. All in order to find the finest examples of cat and touchscreen.

Adorable stupid is after the jump.

Yahoo Messenger for Vista Beta Includes Voice SMS

This article was written on May 01, 2008 by CyberNet.

yahoo messenger vista.jpg

Yahoo Messenger is the number one instant messaging service, and they are really starting to show off the talent their development team has. It’s been over a year now since we first got a glimpse of what their Vista-specific messenger looked like. And disappointingly a lot of time has passed since it was last updated causing debate as to whether the project was still alive.

About two months ago they assured us that a new version was on the way, and they weren’t lying! The Yahoo Messenger blog announced today that the app has entered the Beta stage, and is ready to be downloaded. I have to admit that they have added some really nice features to this version, and it’s definitely not lacking in the eye candy department. Here’s an overview of what’s new:

  • Voice
    – Voice (PC2PC & Phone In/ Phone Out)
    – Voice Visualizations (including WPF 3D integration)
    – SMS
    – Integrated text/voice window for easier navigation
    – Keypad-only mode for quick, simple phone calls
  • Matrix Mode Conversation Window
  • Mail Alerts
  • Additional features and enhancements:
    – New and Optimized for Vista
    – WPF Interface
    – Skin Chooser
    – Customizable Contact List
    – Vector-based
    – Tabbed Conversations
    – Windows Sidebar Gadget

So the big news would have to be the voice support and SMS messaging. The video below shows the cool visualizations that users see when they are engaged in a voice conversation, and it’s pretty slick if I may say so myself. The SMS messaging is something that I really like. When you send a message to one of your friends using SMS it will automatically direct the replies back to the messenger, which eliminates the need to grab your cellphone. Very smart!

Kudos to the Yahoo Messenger team on a job well done, and I’m thinking the only thing this lacks now is video support.

Apple Approves VLC Video Player for iPad

Well, color us surprised (and delighted). Apple has approved VLC Media Player for iPad, an app that plays a multitude of movie formats unsupported by the tablet’s built-in video player.

VLC has been a popular open-source app on the desktop, capable of playing a wide range of media formats at high resolutions, making Apple’s standard iTunes video player (which primarily plays .H264-encoded MPEG-4 videos) pale by comparison.

Wired.com’s Charlie Sorrel got an early sneak peek at VLC for iPad about two weeks ago and said it was one of the most polished video players he’d seen, despite a few bugs.

Why is this such an interesting decision? A lot of consumers get movies and TV shows through (cough) alternative means, and before if they wanted to load their videos on the iPad, they’d have to go through the trouble of converting files to be iTunes-compatible. Approving VLC eliminates such headaches and opens the door for some serious competition with iTunes video rentals. I’m personally more interested in what it means for the new iOS-based Apple TV, if it turns out that third-party apps can indeed use AirPlay, a new feature that enables iOS devices to wirelessly stream content to the Apple TV.

VLC Media Player is a free download in the iPad’s App Store.
