Exemode DV5000UW waterproof HD camcorder gives Steve Zissou a run for his money

Sure it’s a truism, but when it comes to waterproof camcorders, you really get what you pay for. It looks like Exemode’s latest offering in that space cuts corners in the looks department, but what the hell? You can’t really argue with a hi-def (720p), 12 megapixel camcorder that sports USB, HDMI, and A/V (NTSC and PAL) output, 32MB on-board memory, SD card support, and a $150 price tag. Did we mention that it’s waterproof?

Sanyo’s VPC-CA102YL waterproof HD camcorder, your perfect accessory for visiting Sealab 2021

Sanyo isn’t breaking out the hyperbole with this water-resistant full HD pocket camcorder — that honor went to the DMX-CA100 back in May — but the VPC-CA102YL does boast a spec sheet as impressive as its product name. We’ve got 1920 x 1080 / 60i video in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, 14 megapixel stills, an articulating 2.7-inch wide LCD, 12x dual dual range zoom on video, and 5x optical zoom on photos… and did we mention it’s waterproof up to 10 feet under? Connectivity options include USB, mini HDMI for TV sets, and a SDXC card slot. Due out this month — perfect for capturing the very last bit of Summer — for a penny under $350. Product shots below, press release after the break. (P.S. — 10 feet to the bottom of the ocean? Bizarro!)

M-Edge Offers New Kindle 2 Cases: Waterproof Guardian, M-Skin, New Yorker Jackets

M-Edge Kindle Guardian.jpg
M-Edge had added several new cases to its lineup of accessories for the Amazon Kindle 2 electronic reading device. The waterproof Guardian case is made of polycarbonate, with flexible sealed cutouts that provide access to device controls. Dual hinges and a rubberized o-ring keep the case waterproof at depths up to one meter. The case floats, and has a lanyard attachment on the bottom edge to provide additional security so it won’t float away. The case is available in red, blue, and black for $79.99
The M-Skin is a silicon case with a built-in screen protection flap. A small snap holds it in place when the Kindle 2 is stowed away in your bag. When you’re ready to read, the flap flips up over the back of the device, where another snap holds it in place so it won’t get in your way. The charging port and headphone jack are covered with fold away flaps, and the keyboard is fully covered, with printed letters on the keys so that you can still enter text on your device. The M-Skin is available in white, pink, blue, purple, and gray for $29.99.
Finally, three new options are available in the New Yorker Jacket series ($49.99), which features iconic artwork from the popular publication. The graphics are printed on fabric using a photo sublimation process. A Kindle-compatible hinge and elastic straps are used to secure the Kindle inside the case. The case is also compatible with the M-Edge e-Luminator 2 book light for nighttime reading. The new options are “Dog Behind the Door” by George Booth, “Dogwood Tree in Bloom by Joseph Farris, and “Page Turner” by Ana Juan.
All of these new cases, as well as many other accessory options for the Amazon Kindle 2, are available from the M-Edge Web store.

The LaCie XtremKey: A USB Drive that Can Take a Beating

LaCie - XtremKeyIf your laptop is prone to horrific accidents and natural disasters, or you’re a storm chaser in your free time, you might consider a LaCie XtremKey the next time you go looking for a portable USB Flash drive to store your data. The XtremKey is designed to take a lot of punishment, including extreme heat (up to almost 400 degrees Fahrenheit) and exceptional cold (nearly 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.) If that’s not enough for you, the XtremKey is also watertight up to 100 meters and resists damage in up to 5-meter drops.

The XtremKey has a cylindrical design that’s narrower on one side so it can stand upright, but it still fits all of that protection into a 3-inch tall body. The drive itself is USB 2.0 and comes in 8GB to 64GB capacities. It will be available starting in August at $49.99 for the 8GB version.

DXG Intros Line of Waterproof HD Video Cameras

DXG-Sportster.jpg

If you’ve got a tropical vacation coming up this summer, bring along a video camera that goes where the others don’t: under the sea. DXG has just introduced the Sportster line of rugged, waterproof high-definition cameras. The first, shown here, has a traditional camcorder shape and captures 1080p video. It also records up to 10 feet underwater. When you’re ready to submerge, hit the Dive button, and the lenses automatically adjust to underwater colors and conditions.

The camera can also take 12-megapixel still shots and includes USB/AV and HDMI outputs. It offers 128MB of built-in storage, which you can expand with an SD/SDHC card of up to 32GB.

This first Sportster lists for $169.99. The company plans to release a pistol-grip model soon but hasn’t yet announced the release date.

Oregon Scientific ATC9K HD Action Camera does 1080p underwater (video)

Oregon Scientific ATC9K HD Action Camera does 1080p underwater

Another action cam joins the 1080p fold. Oregon Scientific, maker of many a fine weather station and the odd helmet cam, has released details on its ATC9K Action Camera. It’ll do 1080p video, five megapixel photos, is waterproof to 20 meters, comes with an IR remote, and even has an integrated G meter so that you can see just how big a knock your head took on that last ill-advised endo. GPS is an option too, so you can mark your gnarliest adventures on Google Maps, but there’s no mention of price despite the thing set to start shipping here in just a few days. An early unboxing video waits for you after the break, as well as a demo clip that uses extreme angles to make you extremely nauseous. Curiously, all of the demonstrations we’ve seen have had their audio replaced by awful music, leading us to guess this cam has either a poor microphone or simply has none at all.

Wet Circuits waterproof power strip presented by all-time best dubbed videos

Can’t say we’re any keener on the idea of blasting our outlets with Super Soakers, but Wet Circuit’s water resistant power strips boast its ability to withstand just such a defiant action — occasional rain and snow, wet hands, temporary flooding, and accidental water spills (assuredly intentional, too). $35 is the asking price, and while the company claims you can put metallic objects in the socket without fear of electrocution, you probably shouldn’t press your luck. Check out a plethora of demonstrations after the break — no really, we beseech you. Crank the speakers for this one.

Keep your iPad Safe from Summer Downpours with the GO! Sleeve

GO iPad Sleve.jpg
Shin Norie has just announced the GO! iPad Sleeve, a protective sleeve made out of a waterproof all-weather fabric. Cross-Climate performance fabric has been engineered to be soft and breathable, but also to keep water out while allowing the escape of any heat generated by the iPad while it’s within the sleeve.
The sleeve is secured with a Velcro flap and a ZipSeal closure that completely closes the opening in a fashion similar to those ever-present sandwich bags so many of us use to pack our lunches.
Generously sized to accommodate the iPad, even if it is already inside a case as large as the Apple iPad Case, the GO! iPad Sleeve provides extra protection with foam padding and a microfleece lining that helps to clean the screen of the device every time it is inserted or removed from the sleeve.
The GO! iPad Sleeve is available in either a red or gray stripe design, or a red or gray arrow design. The company also offers free one-color personalization on the sleeve, which includes text and/or graphics. It goes for $49.95 with free standard worldwide shipping at the Shin Norie online store.

Magellan’s waterproof Toughcase wraps GPS module, extended battery around your iPhone

There are iPhone cases, and then there’s Magellan‘s waterproof Toughcase. Priced at $199.99, it’s actually just as expensive as a new iPhone 4 on contract, and double the price of an iPhone 3GS (which it actually houses). So, what does two Benjamins get you? Most would argue “not nearly enough,” but argonauts may beg to differ. The case meets IPX-7 waterproof standards, enabling it to be submerged at a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes, and there’s also an integrated 1,840mAh battery that’s able to “double the life” of your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or second / third-generation iPod touch. Moreover, there’s a built-in high sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS chipset for superior GPS reception, and nothing here prevents consumers from accessing the touchscreen. ‘Course, the sex appeal of your iDevice goes right out of the window once you strap this monster on, and there’s no official support for Apple’s newest iPhone, but it’s hard to knock the approach here.

Fujifilm’s durable, dunkable FinePix XP10 compact camera gets a review

Fujifilm's durable, dunkable FinePix XP10 compact camera gets a review

It’s always hard to justify spending extra for a waterproof camera that will do you good at the beach but deliver mediocre image quality everywhere else. Photography Blog has taken a look at Fujifilm’s new 12 megapixel FinePix XP10 waterproof shooter and, while it predictably falls short of DSLR-level quality (or even high-end compacts), it overall scores a very positive review thanks to its 5x zoom lens, 720p video recording, solid construction, and a “pleasingly compact” design that we think looks very funky (in a good way). The camera’s cause is also helped dramatically by an MSRP of £169.99, or $199.95, and we’re finding this thing available online for way less than that. For that kind of money this thing wouldn’t make a bad side-kick for your go-to camera, a sort of stunty stand-in for when the going gets tough… or perhaps just damp.
