Microsoft: New Zune hardware coming this year

Although none too surprising, it looks like Microsoft’s gearing up to release at least one new Zune model this year, according to company man Brian Seitz via his Twitter account. Of course, with Ballmer telling an audience last month they’re “sustaining our investment” on the product, we’re gonna temper our excitement a bit until Redmond shows off the goods, which hopefully won’t be long now that the PMP cat’s out of the bag.

SlotRadio could thrive with more eclectic music

I’ll readily admit that I’m not in the target audience for the new SlotRadio MP3 player from SanDisk, which became available last week.

The $99 device comes with a microSD card containing 1,000 songs, selected by Billboard editors from top-charting radio hits of the last 40 years …

Olympus SP-590UZ (and its 26x zoomer) gets reviewed

We’re beginning to think there really is no number too high for the megazoom focal length. Back in the day, just boasting a 10x zoomer was enough to fall into said category; today, you best top 20x if you even want into the discussion. Olympus’ 26x SP-590UZ is definitely amongst the craziest out there, sporting a 12 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and a launch price of just under $450. Reviewers over at PhotographyBLOG were duly impressed across the board, with a certain critic noting that “the ability to go from capturing wide-angle landscapes to distant details in a four second zoom of the lens cannot be underestimated, especially as there’s little distortion to worry about at either end and excellent sharpness across its entire range.” Not surprisingly, the cam notched a “Highly Recommended” badge along with 4.5 out of 5 overall stars — that said, are you really willing to buy in knowing a 58.983x successor is just around the bend?

Google Voice App Comes to iPhone and iPod Touch Soon

Google Voice, the recent reincarnation of GrandCentral that gives you voicemail transcription, call control and so much more, is about to hit iPhones by way of an app.

The app comes with a dialer, which dials out (from your Google Voice number), and rings your iPhone to connect both sides. It works with a dialpad or your contact list, plus you can also SMS people the same way. There’s other standard Google Voice features like call log and voicemail, which you can listen to much the same way as iPhone’s voicemails.

iPod touch users, who can’t really take advantage of the dialing stuff, can still use the GV app as a mobile control center to have it ring their standard cellphones. We’ll let you know when the app hits. [Google and Sean Kovacs via 9 to 5 Mac]

Gigabyte posts T1028 TouchNote product page, user manual

Gigabyte’s T1028 TouchNote has been cooking on the back burner for weeks now. After we first spotted it lookin’ pretty at CeBIT, the tablet / netbook hybrid has since landed in the FCC’s database and has now shown up officially on the company’s website. The formal specifications list explains that the 10.1-inch machine will boast a swiveling touch panel (LED-backlit), a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 92 percent full-sized keyboard, embedded HSDPA module, a 2.5-inch 160GB SATA HDD, Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3 megapixel camera, Ethernet, 4-cell battery, WiFi and twin 1.5-watt speakers. Optional equipment includes an Atom N280 CPU, WiMAX module, 1,366 x 768 resolution panel (at least according to the user manual) and a more longevous a 6-cell Li-ion. Now, give us a price and ship date and we’ll be pleased as punch.

HTC first quarter earnings fall a not awesome 30 percent

HTC‘s unleashed a barrel of bad news on the world today with their first quarter earnings statement. The company’s profits fell 30 percent during that period, with a net of NT$4.89 billion — $148 million — down from NT$6.94 billion (or $210 million) at the same time last year. HTC still managed to best analysts estimates (shows what they know) which forecast that the company’s earnings would be in the area of NT$4.64 billion ($140 million). HTC said that the profits fell in part to missed product shipping deadlines, which have been pushed into April. And the recession continues…

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Now Works With eBay TurboLister

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Now Works With eBay TurboLister

For those of you who do a lot of work on eBay, then you probably use TurboLister in order to minimize the amount of time it takes to design a listing. Our company is a pure eBay company (all of our sales come from eBay) and we use TurboLister day in and day out. We use it so much that when there was all of the excitement about Internet Explorer Beta 1 being released, I wasn’t able to give it a shot because TurboLister would crash. This is because TurboLister is based off of IE and apparently Microsoft must have changed something and TurboLister didn’t like it.

Whatever the problem was, it is now gone! I am using Internet Explorer Beta 2 Preview Build 5299 and it is running flawlessly. I still use Internet Explorer minimally because of the enormous selection of extensions for Firefox. Also, one of the features I use the most in Firefox cannot be found in IE: Find As You Type! It is such a basic feature but I can’t live without it! Overall, the IE7 is a big improvement over any other version of IE in the past.

If you are interested in trying out the new Internet Explorer, head over to my post with the instructions to download Internet Explorer Beta 2 Preview Build 5299.

Video: 128GB SSD slotted into Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9

Considering just how cheap Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9 gets on occasion, there’s practically no doubt that the SSD portion of this mod will run you more than the computer itself. For those wild and wacky DIYers who couldn’t honestly care less, jkkmobile has put together a video (along with a gallery of images) showing exactly how the process works. For what it’s worth, we’re told that the whole ordeal was a simple matter, but you can judge for yourself after jumping past the break and mashing play.

Sprint goes a little crazy with new Pre advertising

We hadn’t necessarily taken the Pre crowd as the attention-span-of-a-gnat sort, but in case our psychology is dead off, Sprint has formulated a truly mind-blowing 60 seconds of video that runs down a series of meaningless stats — the number of emails just sent containing “miracle banana diet,” for example — and ties it all together neatly at the end as a plug for the carrier’s 3G and 4G networks. Perhaps more importantly, the Pre makes two brief appearances in the ad — but if you’re looking to take your visual overload to the next level, you can have a peep at Sprint’s updated “Plug into Now” site, which blasts you with a seemingly endless series of widgets that keep you abreast of stats like the number of lung transplants that occurred today, the number of shopping days until Christmas, and the current national debt. Clicking on the Pre takes you to a dedicated series of Pre widgets complete with a spinning Pre — nothing new, really, but if you simply must have fast access to Pre mentions on Twitter, this might just be your dream come true. Follow the break for Sprint’s ad, but make sure you’re not too amped on caffeine first.
