Harmonix auctions off custom Beatles Xbox for charity, free publicity

We’re sure you’ve already heard about the kerfuffle surrounding the use of Kurt Cobain’s likeness in a Guitar Hero avatar. Maybe it’s a generational thing (or maybe it speaks to the difference between the temperaments of Ms. Ono and Ms. Love) but while the former members of Nirvana are not amused by their treatment at the hands of videogame consoles ’round the world, it’s nearly unanimous in the Beatles camp: Beatles Rock Band is awesome. If you’re looking to indulge your Fab Four fixation — and if money’s no object — you might want to head on over to eBay and peep the first of fifty Xbox 360s being auctioned off for by Harmonix. Bidding started off at $780, but as of Sunday afternoon it’s over $17,000 — with over four days left to go! Designed by Passion Pictures (the kids responsible for animating Gorillaz), proceeds go to Doctors without Borders. Please insert your own Courtney Love joke here.

Earlier iPod touch with camera leak vindicated in light of 3rd gen teardown

That mysterious 6- x 6- x 3-millimeter slot found within the most recent iPod touch teardown? We were pretty sure it was the eventual resting place for a camera sensor, but now we’ve got mounting evidence with the discovery of a missing link. If you recall, there was an August-borne leak of an iPod touch with camera that showed said slot filled with a chip that, in hindsight, looks to match up well with the video camera sensor in the 5G iPod nano (check out step 17). This revelation doesn’t get us any closer to snapping videos with the touchscreen PMP, but we do have a few more questions for Steve to dodge.

Deutsche Telekom eyeing Sprint Nextel for acquisition?

With T-Mobile UK and Orange now having to (potentially) learn to play nice, Deutsche Telekom is already looking ahead to its next big target: Sprint Nextel. According to a Telegraph report, the telecom giant, with an estimated value of $60.45 billion, has called in advisers from Deutsche Bank as it reportedly prepares to submit an offer to the $10.6 billion-valued Now Network within the next three weeks. The assimilation of Sprint and Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile US under the same umbrella could give second-place AT&T a fight with a 78.2 million-strong customer base… but that said, we wouldn’t anticipate any quick or smooth merger given the US carriers rely on substantially different bands (CDMA vs. GSM) for service. Hey, there’s always WiMAX might come into play. Obviously there’s a lot of unanswered questions here, but at this point it’s all speculation given no actual offer has been thrown on the table — and we bet Hesse will have some choice words on the matter. Keep an eye out on this one, things could very quickly get very, very interesting here.

Toyota’s plug-in hybrid Prius gets pictured, detailed further

The future, kids — we’re living in it. Sensationalism aside, we are pretty jazzed to hear that Toyota’s long-awaited, much-teased plug-in Prius hybrid will be making its bona fide debut to the public next week. The image above is expected to be near-final, though we’re reserving judgment until we see if the actual model on stage is plastered with 80s era stick-on graphics. Of note, the Hybrid Synergy Drive system has been upgraded for this whip, enabling it to slowly rocket from 0 to 62 without using a drop of gasoline. Once there, it can cruise for up to 12.5 miles in electric mode, and should you need to juice it back up, it’ll take 1.5 hours when charged from a 230V source. Further details are expected to flow as Frankfurt heats up, though the whole “not shipping to retail until 2012” kind of puts a damper on our excitement.

New HP / Vivienne Tam netbook targets ‘butterfly lovers,’ waifs

Manhattan socialites and fashionistas might as well stop reading this right now. But if for some strange reason you weren’t at New York’s Fashion Week yesterday, we are pleased to tell you that “the Tamster” (as we call visionary clothes horse Vivienne Tam) is back with yet another “digital clutch” for the year 2010. Apparently inspired by the classic Chinese love story “Butterfly Lovers,” this is yet another hyped-up collaboration between the designer and HP, somehow symbolizing “love, freedom, independence and transformation,” according to the PR. While we do know that this device is supposed to make “women around the world… feel independent and free, like butterflies,” we’ve yet to be turned on to any specifics, such as system specs or price. But chin up, sailor — we only have until Spring 2010 to find out. Hope you can wait that long! In the meantime, there’s a gallery below, and some marketing material for you after the break.

The Engadget Show is today — here’s all the info!

The Engadget Show is happening today, Sunday, September 13th, in New York City. Our first guest will be Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein!

The show will take place at the Tishman Auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design. The beautiful venue (which you can see in a photo after the break) is located at 66 W. 12th Street between 5th and 6th Ave. Seating is limited and tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis — which means if you want to join us in the audience for the show, you’ll have to arrive early and be prepared for a little wait.

Here are some facts about the show:

  • The show is graciously sponsored by Nokia, and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design
  • Bit Shifter (one of our favorite chiptune artists) will be playing live at the first show!
  • The total show length will be around an hour

Here is what you need to know if you’re coming today to be part of the audience:

  • There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free
  • The event is all ages
  • The venue seats just over 450 people
  • Parsons students are welcomed, and we encourage them to come!
  • Tickets will be available for pickup at the Tishman Auditorium at 2PM today, and we’re strongly encouraging people to get their tickets and not stand in line — just pick up a ticket and then return in a couple hours for the taping. If you have a ticket, you’ll have a seat!
  • You cannot pick up tickets for other people — if you want your friend to get a ticket, bring your friend!
  • The show begins at 5PM, and doors will open at 4:30PM — no one will be seated after 4:50PM
  • Hold on to your ticket stubs — we have a very good reason which you’ll find out about at the taping!
  • If you’re going to tweet about the show (you know you want to), feel free to include #engadgetshow

Sony’s PS3 Slim gets the ColorWare treatment

You know, sometimes it’s just fun to go to ColorWare’s site and see just how ugly we can make our favorite consumer electronics. It was while trying to find just the right shade of puce for that Cisco 7900 Series desk phone when someone pointed out that the company is now offering custom-colored Sony PS3 Slims. Color the logo, the top, the base, and up to four controllers. They’ll sell you a console outright for $449, or send yours in and they’ll ugly it up for $149 (controllers cost extra).

2010 BMWs boast improved Nuance voice control system

BMWs aren’t exactly lacking for technology these days, but it looks like the new 2010 models come packing a little something extra to make your life even easier. As Nuance Communications is all too happy to announce itself, the new vehicles boast an improved voice control system from the company that promises to allow for a “more conversational dialogue between drivers and BMW navigation and entertainment systems.” That, naturally, gets paired with BMW’s own iDrive system, and includes some Sync-like abilities to search for music by voice, as well as a new “One-Shot Destination Entry” feature to let folks enter a destination address in one simple voice command. It can even apparently recognize several different language in parallel, letting a French-speaking driver, for instance, search for a German song title or English album title.

Ooh la la: French-made satellite-subwoofer system

The Dome system combines sleek good looks and high quality sound.

(Credit: Focal)

Focal Audio, aka JM Lab, may not be a well-known name in the U.S., but it is France’s largest speaker manufacturer. I had Focal Mini Utopia speakers in my reference two-channel system for years and the Focal Grande Utopia EM ($180,000 per pair) is the best sounding speaker I’ve ever heard.

Maybe that’s why the Focal Dome 5.1 satellite/subwoofer system ($2,595 MSRP) review by Michael Trei in Sound & Vision magazine piqued my interest.

The Dome replaces the Sib and Cub 5.1 system I favorably reviewed a few years ago. Unlike the Asian-built Sib and Cub, the Domes are manufactured at Focal’s factory in Saint-Etienne, France.

The Dome 5.1 package is Focal smallest home speaker system yet. Trei writes: “the Dome satellite’s cast-aluminum enclosure feels solid enough to withstand being run over by a small car.” Each satellite speaker has a 4-inch woofer and a 1-inch aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter, similar to the one Focal uses in its upscale Profile and Electra S models. Optional stands are available for the sats.

The matching cylindrical, rounded-top subwoofer has a single downward-firing 8-inch woofer and a built-in 100-watt amplifier.
