AOL 9 Is Finally Labeled As Badware

This article was written on August 28, 2006 by CyberNet.

AOL Processes Still Running After Uninstall I think everyone knew this time would come but I am surprised it took so long. StopBadware.org is the one that is putting up the fight against AOL and they have a long list of reasons why AOL 9.0 (free version) shouldn’t be installed.

Here is their reasoning:

In our preliminary findings, we find that AOL 9.0 (free version) is currently badware because it installs additional software without telling the user, it forces the user to take certain actions, it adds various components to Internet Explorer and the taskbar without disclosure, it may automatically update without the user’s consent, and it fails to uninstall completely.

  • Installs additional software without disclosure (Deceptive installation)
  • Forces users to take an action (Interferes with computer use)
  • Adds AOL toolbar in Internet Explorer (Makes changes to other software without disclosure)
  • Adds additional icons to default Internet Explorer toolbar (Makes changes to other software without disclosure)
  • Adds to “Favorites” in Internet Explorer (Modifies other software without disclosure)
  • Adds AOL Deskbar to the user’s taskbar (Modifies other software without disclosure)
  • Updates software automatically (Deceptive installation)
  • Fails to uninstall software completely (Unacceptable unistallation)

Pretty soon AOL will have to bribe PC manufacturers to permanently install their software by integrating a chip into the computer. Supposedly AOL has acknowledged that there is a “design flaw” in the uninstaller…obviously if it doesn’t uninstall! They make it sound like they didn’t know it did that.

Do you feel lucky? Then download AOL 9 and maybe you won’t have any problems. :D

Crucial’s 6Gbps RealSSD C300 goes on sale, costs as much as a decent laptop

You’ve gone for the 64GB of quad-channel DDR7 RAM, you’ve got your Core i26 processor, and you’re running a triple pack of those Radeon Ultra HD 9000 cards in CrossFire. But something’s missing from your speed demon machine — could a $799 SSD be the answer? Crucial would have you believe that, yes, splashing all your rent money on a 256GB storage drive is a totally worthwhile investment, and early reviews of the RealSSD C300 revealed it to be “holy mother of god” fast. So no qualms about its speed, but if your benchmark lust knows some budgetary bounds, you may want to consider the slightly more reasonable 128GB variant, which comes in at $499. Both are available right this minute direct from Crucial, so either go buy one or stop this torture and go distract yourself with something cheaper.

[Thanks, Rick]

Weigh to Go: Luggage Tag and Scale Combo

tag-weigh

Quirky’s new Weigh to Go takes two boring, tedious luggage tasks and combines them into one almost fun product. The Weigh to Go is both luggage tag and weighing scale, and sits on the handle of your suitcase quietly displaying your name and address. When you need to know just how much crap you have to remove from the case to get through check-in, the little label leaps into action.

The tag comprises an ABS plastic body with a rubber rim, a steel carabiner with combination lock (to stop the tag itself from being stolen — the contents of your bag will still have to take their chances) a pair of Velcro straps to keep the tag from swinging, and a digital scale.

To use it, you just un-stick the Velcro, hit the on-switch and pick up the bag by the tag. After five seconds you get a readout, and you can decide whether you really need to take that fifth pair of shoes with you.

Quirky, if you remember, takes pre-orders for its community-designed products and only starts the factory lines a-rolling once the minimum number is reached (Quirky doesn’t charge your credit card until the products are done). This time the number is 775, and the price is $33, which you’ll save on overweight baggage charges on your first trip.

Weigh to Go [Quirky. Thanks, Tiffany!]

Canon Rebel T2i / 550D demonstrates 1080p video mode, collects glowing early preview

We seriously need to open up an Austrian branch of Engadget. After treating us to a titanium iPhone, the Governator’s homeland is now playing host to the first professionally shot 1080p video with the new T2i / 550D from Canon. Nino Leitner has shot a moody short film with a pre-production unit and his conclusion has been that the video you can obtain from the latest prosumer shooter is indistinguishable from the output of the mighty Canon 7D. High praise indeed, but not altogether unexpected considering the T2i sports an all-new 18 megapixel sensor (that is “very similar” to the 7D’s) and has had its 1080p recording upgraded to the requisite 30fps to make it a viable shooting mode. Skip past the break to have a look at his results or visit the source for Nino’s in-depth preview. Nikon, you’ve been put on notice.

LG’s first Windows Phone 7 handset shipping as early as September

Our buds over at Engadget Chinese are just reporting back from a sitdown it had with LG Mobile in Hong Kong at a Chinese New Year event. The most tantalizing bit of truth is confirmation of that September launch date rumor for its first Windows Phone 7 Series device. However, this time LG padded the date a bit and said it would launch sometime between September and November. Of course, the only official word so far, has Windows Phone 7 launching before the “holidays,” so we’ll take what we can get. Maybe Mr. Ballmer meant Halloween?

Quake 3 ported to Android, shows off Droid’s graphical prowess (video)

You should by now be well aware that there’s no shortage of games one can play on one’s beloved Droid, but just for the FPS old schoolers out there, how’s about a nice Quake 3 port to pass the time with? Yup, the game that defined the term multiplayer before World of Warcraft came around has been enabled on the Android OS, finally finding another mobile home after residing on Nokia handsets for so long. For its short development time, this looks a very well refined translation of the software and offers you customizable controls to go with thoroughly playable frame rates. And if you have an older Android phone, don’t despair — Quake 2 has also been ported over, so once you’ve had an eyeful of the Droid, why not hit the source link to find out how to get in on the action?

[Thanks, Anders]

Samsung’s first Full HD 3D TV now available in the US, all 55 inches of it

Hope you’re ready to see the make believe world in a new dimension ’cause Samsung’s first Full HD 3D set is now shipping Stateside. Amazon shows a pair of 55-inch UN55C7000 TVs with 3D 240Hz motion technology in stock with a $3,299.99 price tag and free delivery. Yeah, that’s a day earlier than expected but we doubt anyone’s complaining. Remember, you’ll still have to drop another $150 or so on the shutter glasses if you ever plan to flip the switch from 2D to 3D mode; something you might want to do when actual 3D content starts to arrive.

Update: Looks like Sears is shipping now as well, including the 46-inch UN46C7000 little brother for $2,600.

ATI busts out Radeon HD 5830, covers all bases

Whether you wanna call it the affordable high end or the really supercharged midrange, ATI has decided that there is a space to be filled between its scorching 5850/70 cards and the only somewhat slower 5770 SKU. So let’s all meet the $239 HD 5830, shall we? As is par for the Evergreen course, it’s a 40nm DirectX 11 card, and while it matches the 2.15 billion transistor count of the 5850, the new contender makes do with only 16 ROPs and 1,120 stream processors. To compensate for that processing loss, the core clock is raised to 800MHz while maintaining the 1GHz memory speed of the elder 5850. If this sounds like the 5830 will basically be composed of 5850 chips that didn’t quite make the high grade, good, because that’s exactly what’s happening. Internet reviewers have already had some time to play around with ATI’s latest card, and if we can draw a consensus, it would be that while the performance is pretty much spot on between its nearest siblings, the price is that little bit too steep to make the HD 5830 an easy recommendation.

MvixUSA Solido USB WiFi adapter finds signals a county away, makes you look super important

Or tremendously dorky, either one. MvixUSA‘s newest WiFi adapter / range extender is a dramatic departure from its oh-so-minuscule Nubbin, though we’re told that the downright gaudy 5dbi antenna provides more wireless range than you ever thought possible. Put simply, this 802.11n adapter takes advantage of MIMO technology, promising throughput up to 300Mbps and forcing you to look as if you’re pinging a satellite just south of Jupiter rather than reaching for that Starbucks router eight blocks over. The good news is that it’s only $34.99, and amazingly, it might just be less heinous than the Wi-Fire. Shocking, we know.

Akihabara Majokko Princess

UPDATE: It seems that the copyright holders are really protective of their video or really embarrassed by it. Either way, let’s hope that they don’t take this video version down.

I think that this will be roundly ridiculed throughout the Japan-centric blogostweetsphere, so let’s leave it up to them to dissect how this terrible video panders to the lowest common pop denominator.

As our own Will Andrews said to me, “This is like me walking down the street in Paris wearing garlic and a black beret while clutching a baguette”. In other words, it’s ok when Toast Girl does it because she’s pretty much being herself the whole time.

Seriously….McG?!
