I think everyone knew this time would come but I am surprised it took so long. StopBadware.org is the one that is putting up the fight against AOL and they have a long list of reasons why AOL 9.0 (free version) shouldn’t be installed.

Here is their reasoning:

In our preliminary findings, we find that AOL 9.0 (free version) is currently badware because it installs additional software without telling the user, it forces the user to take certain actions, it adds various components to Internet Explorer and the taskbar without disclosure, it may automatically update without the user’s consent, and it fails to uninstall completely.

• Installs additional software without disclosure (Deceptive installation)
• Forces users to take an action (Interferes with computer use)
• Adds AOL toolbar in Internet Explorer (Makes changes to other software without disclosure)
• Adds additional icons to default Internet Explorer toolbar (Makes changes to other software without disclosure)
• Adds to “Favorites” in Internet Explorer (Modifies other software without disclosure)
• Adds AOL Deskbar to the user’s taskbar (Modifies other software without disclosure)
• Updates software automatically (Deceptive installation)
• Fails to uninstall software completely (Unacceptable unistallation)

Pretty soon AOL will have to bribe PC manufacturers to permanently install their software by integrating a chip into the computer. Supposedly AOL has acknowledged that there is a “design flaw” in the uninstaller…obviously if it doesn’t uninstall! They make it sound like they didn’t know it did that.

Do you feel lucky? Then download AOL 9 and maybe you won’t have any problems.

Quirky’s new Weigh to Go takes two boring, tedious luggage tasks and combines them into one almost fun product. The Weigh to Go is both luggage tag and weighing scale, and sits on the handle of your suitcase quietly displaying your name and address. When you need to know just how much crap you have to remove from the case to get through check-in, the little label leaps into action.

The tag comprises an ABS plastic body with a rubber rim, a steel carabiner with combination lock (to stop the tag itself from being stolen — the contents of your bag will still have to take their chances) a pair of Velcro straps to keep the tag from swinging, and a digital scale.

To use it, you just un-stick the Velcro, hit the on-switch and pick up the bag by the tag. After five seconds you get a readout, and you can decide whether you really need to take that fifth pair of shoes with you.

Quirky, if you remember, takes pre-orders for its community-designed products and only starts the factory lines a-rolling once the minimum number is reached (Quirky doesn’t charge your credit card until the products are done). This time the number is 775, and the price is $33, which you’ll save on overweight baggage charges on your first trip.

Our buds over at Engadget Chinese are just reporting back from a sitdown it had with LG Mobile in Hong Kong at a Chinese New Year event. The most tantalizing bit of truth is confirmation of that September launch date rumor for its first Windows Phone 7 Series device. However, this time LG padded the date a bit and said it would launch sometime between September and November. Of course, the only official word so far, has Windows Phone 7 launching before the “holidays,” so we’ll take what we can get. Maybe Mr. Ballmer meant Halloween?

Hope you’re ready to see the make believe world in a new dimension ’cause Samsung’s first Full HD 3D set is now shipping Stateside. Amazon shows a pair of 55-inch UN55C7000 TVs with 3D 240Hz motion technology in stock with a $3,299.99 price tag and free delivery. Yeah, that’s a day earlier than expected but we doubt anyone’s complaining. Remember, you’ll still have to drop another $150 or so on the shutter glasses if you ever plan to flip the switch from 2D to 3D mode; something you might want to do when actual 3D content starts to arrive.

Update: Looks like Sears is shipping now as well, including the 46-inch UN46C7000 little brother for $2,600.

MvixUSA‘s newest WiFi adapter / range extender is a dramatic departure from its oh-so-minuscule Nubbin, though we’re told that the downright gaudy 5dbi antenna provides more wireless range than you ever thought possible. Put simply, this 802.11n adapter takes advantage of MIMO technology, promising throughput up to 300Mbps and forcing you to look as if you’re pinging a satellite just south of Jupiter rather than reaching for that Starbucks router eight blocks over. The good news is that it’s only $34.99, and amazingly, it might just be less heinous than the Wi-Fire. Shocking, we know.
