Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

tweetie.pngTwitter Acquires Tweetie
Twitter took a bold step last week, and instead of developing/marketing their own homegrown iPhone application they have bought one of the most popular apps: Tweetie. This may or may not be good news for consumers. The good part is that they will be slashing the price from $3 down to free, and the developer of the app is joining Twitter’s mobile team. My only worry now is whether we’ll continue to see the same quality updates that we have been seeing.

Gizmodo has posted two great videos that show off the new upcoming features in the iPhone OS 4 release. This includes the multitasking and folders which were a highlight of the keynote, but they also go more in depth and look at things like the new mail app and playlist enhancements.

firefox 37-1.jpgFirefox 3.7 Nightly Lets You Put Tabs on Top
For a little while we saw Aero glass support in the Firefox nightly builds, but while we wait for its return there is something else you can play with now. When right-clicking on a toolbar one of the new options is to place the tabs on the top of the screen. Many themes are already capable of doing stuff like this, but it’s nice to see it natively supported.

pdf epub.jpgConvert PDF Files to ePub
The iPad supports any ePub files you may have lying around, and with a little work you can also get your PDFs into the iBook app by converting them to that format. The process takes a little work, but it gets a little faster once you’ve done it a few times and get the hang of it.

–Tips in Brief–

snap links.jpgSnap Links Lite for Chrome
The Firefox extension called Snap Links as been ported to a Chrome extension, but with a little less functionality. You can now bulk open links by simply drawing a box around them, but it doesn’t have all the customizability that the Firefox extension offers.

Sony selling ‘PlayStation Protection Plan’ warranty extension for PS3, PSP

Sony makes some pretty resilient game consoles, and while you’ll certainly hear about the occasional glitch, they aren’t exactly plagued with RRoD. That said, there’s always room for worry, and if you’re willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a brand-new service agreement with your name on it. Dubbed the “PlayStation Protection Plan,” it simply extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two, and optionally covers your handheld’s five-foot swan dive onto solid concrete for an additional fee. While replacement won’t quite be no-questions-asked and the warranty explicitly fails to cover dead pixels, liquid damage and loss of data (among other things), we can still imagine some will pony up the $30 to $50 for extra insurance. Not us, though. Since you can only buy if you’re still within the original warranty period, it won’t help us replace our backwards-compatible 60GB PS3… and honestly, we think we’ve had enough of Sony’s protection.

Hands-on Twitter’s official Android app

Twitter’s new Android app looks good and packs some perks, but it also has a serious drawback. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://www.cnet.com/8301-19736_1-20004021-251.html” class=”origPostedBlog”Android Atlas/a/p

Internet Explorer market share falls below 60 percent for first time, according to NetApplications

NetApplications has just released its browser market share stats for the month of April, and there is something notable here: Internet Explorer has fallen to a “historic low” of 59.95 percent market share, losing about 0.69 points since last month. Google’s Chrome continues its assault on Safari, reaching a 6.73 percent share (while Safari nabbed 4.72). Of course, Internet Explorer is still so far ahead of the rest of the pack it’s hard to make these losses — however significant — into a tragedy of epic proportions story for Microsoft, so we’re not going to do that. Keep in mind, as well, that NetApplications is not the only measurement of market share — and StatCounter, by comparison, currently estimates IE’s share at about 51.42 percent. Hit up the source link for the full battery of data.

Jailbreak App Turns iPhone Into 3G Modem for iPad

img_0554Data-hungry iPhone owners eager to grab iPads can forgo paying for a 3G model altogether and save a good buck. That is, so long as they’re willing to take a risk.

MyWi, an app available for hacked (i.e., jailbroken) iPhones, turns the handset into a wireless 3G modem that can be tethered to an iPad. That means you can skip paying the extra $130 on a 3G-only model, along with the $15 or $30 fee for data, and get internet access for free from your iPhone’s unlimited data plan, instead.

The process of turning your iPhone into a wireless modem for the iPad looks quite simple. According to AppAdvice, which originally reported on MyWi, all you have to is launch the app and flip the “WiFi Tethering” option to “On.” Then, your iPhone will create a Wi-Fi network that you can choose with your iPad.

There is a drawback, of course: Jailbreaking comes with risks. Apple recently issued a support bulletin stating that hacking your iPhone can result in application instability, unreliable voice and data service and other issues. And of course, turning your iPhone into a modem drains its battery pretty fast.

Nonetheless, the jailbreak community has come a long way. The MyWi app looks less cumbersome to set up than an official tethering app we reported on in 2008 called NetShare, which actually made it into the App Store briefly — it was almost immediately pulled and banned by Apple.

The MyWi app can be downloaded through the Rock app store available for jailbroken iPhones. It costs $10, and it comes with a free 10-day trial. For information on jailbreaking an iPhone, visit the Dev-Team Blog.

A tale of two iPad cases: the Dodocase and M-Edge Trip Jacket

If you’re like us, one of the first things you wanted to do after getting your iPad was to find a great case for it. Right off the bat, we weren’t really that into Apple’s offering, which is strangely 90’s in its design aesthetic, though it does have a number of decent features if you’re looking for a do-it-all scenario and don’t have strong feelings on looks. For us, however, the goal was finding something that kept a low profile, shielded the slate from unnecessary grime, and made it easier to deal with. Oh, and we wanted it to look like a book. After reviewing the options, we’ve come up with two choices that we think are your best bets for turning your iPad into something a little more familiar, so here’s our quick take on M-Edge’s Trip Jacket, and the stunning, hand-made Dodocase.
