When I was small, the closest I came to dressing like my film idols was to take my snorkel parka, button it just once at the neck, put up the hood and wear it arms-off, like a cape. With this simple trick, I became Batman. My brother got Superman pajamas, but life’s not fair.

Now, I can make up for my deprived childhood with Adidas’ new Star Wars collection. Instead of being lame-o sci-fi nerdwear, Adidas has put together clothes you’ll actually wear. So you can dress up in a shiny black puffer jacket with seams sewed to make it look like Darth Vader’s own, along with sneakers and jackets that will make you look like you’re a member of Rogue Squadron.

The coolest outfit, though, must be Han Solo’s Hoth gear, complete with quilted pants and fur-hooded parka (just like my old one!). Totally badass, although you might want to skip the blaster and holster if you actually venture out in public.

The collection isn’t yet live on the Adidas Originals site, and the prices are bound to be outrageous. Still, I have a feeling I might be dressed and ready to visit any ice-planet you care to throw at me this winter.

Terrafugia Transition aircraft gets DOT roadworthiness sign-off, can now drive you to the airport

For most experimental aircraft, earning an airworthiness certificate is enough of a challenge. But the Terrafugia Transition is a unique type of flying machine, requiring approval not only from the FAA, but also from the USDOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), since this air / land hybrid is likely to spend just as much time cruising down the highway as it will flying 5,000 feet above. The Transition is now slightly closer to takeoff, with the NHTSA granting exemptions for absent airbags, a missing electronic stability system, and the plane’s lightweight polycarbonate windows (polycarbonate is lighter than automotive safety glass, and won’t shatter and obscure a pilot’s vision in the event of a bird strike). Unfortunately the Transition still has other hurdles to fly over — its cabin is limited to carrying 330 pounds when fully fueled, including passengers, and the price has jumped 41 percent, to $250,000. In the meantime, Terrafugia hopes to move forward with production later this year, bringing the ‘flying car’ slightly closer to a runway (and highway) near you.

Google slides Prizes into beta, helps you get real paid

Come on down! You can be the next contestant on the Prizes site. That was overkill, we know, but it’s a necessary introduction into a new world of online solution-based social gaming pioneered by the Slide team. Acquired by the Goog back in 2010, the low profile entertainment-driven app developer has been hard at work making the web ‘more social’ and filling its Big Daddy’s pockets. Debuting in classic Google beta form, Prizes takes your Twitter or Facebook accounts and signs you up for cash prize-winning, user-created contest shenanigans. In case you missed that fine point, we’ll reiterate — users design the challenges, you post a solution (or vice versa). Like the $40 “Give my Dad a makeover!” competition we’re completely unqualified to enter, or the $30 “Comprehensive ‘get healthy’ plan for living in a large, polluted city” game we’re sure Al Gore could win in his sleep. It’s a kooky idea, but we can definitely see the service having widespread appeal. Let’s be frank here: Google + social gaming + prize money = solid user gold.

Ubuntu Studio 7.04 Download…Multimedia Pro’s Rejoice!

This article was written on May 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

For the audio, graphics, and video lovers out there…Ubuntu Studio 7.04 is here! One of the developers, “joejaxx,” posted about the new release to give some insight as to what you can expect after getting Ubuntu Studio up and running:

The Ubuntu Studio team is proud to announce its first release: 7.04 for Intel i386-compatible processors. With this release, which you can download for DVD in little over 860 MiB, we offer a feature that is somewhat reminiscent of Ubuntu Server: on installation, you can choose between the Audio, Graphics or Video tasks; and choose also to install a number of plugins, which for this release is mainly aimed at audio production.

To test out Ubuntu Studio you have to install it on your PC because there is no LiveCD/DVD to use. After you get it up and running you’ll find some of these great applications there for you to use:

  • Video:
    • PiTiVi – Video editor
    • dvgrab – Grab digital video data via IEEE1394 links
  • Graphics:
    • Blender – A very fast and versatile 3D suite for modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback.
    • Gimp – Powerful photo editing application often compared to Adobe Photoshop.
    • Inkscape – A vector-based drawing program similar to Adobe Illustrator.
  • Audio:
    • Audacity – Swiss army audio editor
    • Ardour – Digital audio workstation
  • And much much more…

Ubuntu Studio also brings a sexy black theme to your computer, but I think it might be a little too dark for my own liking. Here are three screenshots to give you an overview of what it looks like:

The demand for this release is so great that the site seems to be suffering from the same troubles that Ubuntu had when they released 7.04 a few weeks ago. Their site is currently unavailable so we have taken the liberty of posting links to several mirrors that are hosting Ubuntu Studio 7.04, and I put them in the order of the fastest first. I was receiving 500KBps+ on the first mirror which nearly maxed out my download speed.

Note: The ISO image is 860MB which is just slightly larger than what a CD can hold, so you’ll have to burn this to a DVD.

It seems that those fortuitous webOS junkies have upheld their end of the deal, as the first delectable homebrew patches have begun to show up in Preware. As we’ve seen, this tech is offered at no cost — and HP continues to reach out to devs of unofficial apps, making the situation a win for everyone. Hasselblad acquired by Ventizz Capital Fund, will explore ‘brand new markets’

Change may be afoot over at Hasselblad, now that the high-end camera maker has been acquired by Ventizz Capital Fund IV — a private equity firm based in Switzerland and Germany. Neither party disclosed any financial details, but Ventizz said it will implement “no major structural or key management changes” at its newly acquired company. It remains to be seen whether or not this acquisition brings about any changes at the strategic level, though Hasselblad CEO Larry Hansen said his company is looking forward to exploring “brand new markets” — including, we hope, the “sub-$10,000” one. Full PR after the break.

[Thanks, Rene]

HTC Flyer now includes stylus at Best Buy, you can hang on to your 80 bucks

Pinching pennies so you can buy the HTC Flyer and the optional $80 stylus? Give your thumb and index finger a rest for a while. Best Buy, which originally sold the Scribe digital pen as an additional accessory, is now including it with the tablet, free of charge. A quick look at the retailer’s online store shows the pair sitting side-by-side in perfect harmony, bundled in the same package for $499. This may not seal the deal for your indecisive mind, but at least now you’ll be able to draw moustaches on your ex’s Facebook pics without your wallet giving you dirty looks.

CyberNotes: Uncyclopedia – The Wikipedia of Lies and Sarcasm

This article was written on May 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Weekend Website

I’m a pretty big fan of Wikipedia, and I visit there at least once a week.  Sure, the information isn’t always 100% accurate, but I think they do their best at keeping it a semi-reliable encyclopedia, and the tone is usually informational.

If you want the complete opposite of Wikipedia and a good laugh, checkout Uncyclopedia.  As they describe themselves, it’s “an encyclopedia full of misinformation and utter lies.” Sounds like a tabloid magazine, doesn’t it? It’s kinda like that, except better because it’s about topics that’ll probably interest you.

The very first I had heard of Uncyclopedia was in the CyberNet forum where Pieter cautioned readers saying “Warning: this site can decrease your productivity.” He also says that they’re politically incorrect, use sarcasm, and are actually funny. I couldn’t agree more, and that’s exactly the reason it’s enjoyable to go there and look around.

With over 23,347 different articles written in English that are open for anybody to edit, and knowing that the intent of the site is to be incorrect and sarcastic, there’s a lot of funny material that will keep you glued to your computer.

If you don’t know where to start, just go to Uncyclopedia and click “Random” in the left sidebar. You’re bound to find something that will give you a good laugh eventually. Below are some technology related topics and a small sample from the topic page for your enjoyment:

Windows XP : How to Secure Windows XP– 1.  Switch to Linux 2.  Yer…that’s it. 3. Put fireworks in your CD tray.

Uncyclopedia

40 fun things to do at Best Buy #1 off of this list is (you really should read the whole list, it’s pretty entertaining):

When an employee approaches you to ask if you need help finding anything as if you’re freakin’ four or something, speak extremely broken English in third person with a low voice, except when you’re saying what you need, which you should say perfectly and in your normal voice. *Tip: make the thing you need very technical-sounding.* (i.e. “Hey, need help finding anything today?” “Ya, [your name] reeeely, reeely needzerz aerh bahnd nay-ewgeegoo HP Pavilion Laptop Computer witna ahbai Intel Dual-Core Processor. Undu makey itz cumpooortibuhb wiba Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition unsdper Microsoft Windows Vista Beta dooopoabgz *snorrt*.). It’s great.

Unnecessary iPod Accessoriesexamples:

  • iStink: The First iPod to Double as an iDeoderant.  Be prepared for unrelenting female attention and or late nights.
  • iVirus: Causes any iProduct to malfunction, displaying iSuck on the screen.
  • iBlind: All your favorite songs in braille.
  • iFart: What you lookin’ at?

Evil Empire – Google’s famous phrase is “Don’t be evil,” so it makes sense that by searching for Google, the returned result is “do you mean evil empire?” And by clicking on Evil Empire, it says “You may be looking for Google and not even know it.”

Dontbeevil

The examples above came specifically from their technology section, but they have any topic imaginable just like any encyclopedia would. One of the best ways to discover the best material besides the random feature listed above, is to use their “Best of” section. It’s their list of the best of the best.

Thanks Pieter for posting this in the Forum!

Red Cross Charity Donation Vending Machine

Coca-Cola and the

Users are given the option of donating either ¥10 or ¥100, and as with a normal purchase the buttons light up when the money is inserted but instead of receiving a beverage when pressed, the machine emits a loud “Thank you very much for the donation”. The units themselves are branded with the iconic red cross and have some images of the work the Japan Red Cross are currently doing around the world and in Tohoku as part of ongoing relief efforts.

100% of the money collected through to September will go towards the relief efforts of the earthquake and the vending machines will remain in place to collect money for the Red Cross indefinitely.

red-cross-vending-machine3

Whilst this certainly makes it a lot easier for members of the public to donate using the ubiquitous machines, it may be even more effective if users actually receive something for their donations. Adding an incentive, for example a limited edition pin badge that donators can wear with pride displaying their generosity, may help to drive more people to part with their yen. Ultimately it would be great to see specific charity vending machines that rather than added on as a side function, raising funds could actually be the main feature of such machines, and are seen around town as much as the beverage vending equivalents.
