Nikon D5100 kit hits Best Buy shelves early, still costs $900

Nikon D5100 kit available at bestbuy
Eagerly waiting for some swivel screen action on the upcoming Nikon D5100? Well friend, you just got lucky, as said camera has just hit the shelves of Best Buy a few days early. The mid-range DSLR kit is now up for grabs either online or in stores for $900, but we expect Nikon to start shipping body-only options soon after — Amazon and Adorama are already taking pre-orders for $800. Unfortunately, it looks like the accompanying ME-1 external mic won’t be here until the original April 21st launch (or so we hope), but we’re sure all Nikonians will be just fine without it over the next four days. Now go check out your local Best Buy to nab one of these swivelicious cameras.

Nintendo Wii on sale at Toys R Us, Best Buy for $169.99

May 15th is still a month away, but the Nintendo Wii’s price won’t wait — both Best Buy and Toys ‘R’ Us already have the motion-controlled console on sale for $170 today. Mind you, this doesn’t look like a permanent price cut — note “Limited Time Offer!” above — but we wouldn’t be surprised if other retailers follow suit in very short order. With rumors swirling around deeper price cuts and perhaps, maybe, possibly even a new backwards-compatible HD machine, every Wii sold at $170 today could be a little extra gold in their pockets and less unwanted inventory to deal with.

Still need an iPad 2? Head to Best Buy on Sunday, Sunday, Sunday

Well now, this is interesting. We’ve been hearing a lot of chatter about Best Buy and the iPad 2, rumors that the company was sitting on a giant pile of tablets ahead of some great event. Well, now we have an interesting tip that says the company will tap into that stock-pile ahead of a big Sunday launch. According to the above image, stores will, in general, have a minimum of three slates each — which in many cases isn’t going to be enough. Good, then, that the company has a guide on how to “minimize customer disappoints.” BBY has earlier said that it is fulfilling reservations first, so if you’re still holding your ticket but not a tablet this might be a good time to give your local big box a ring.

Toshiba puts its business laptops on a diet, intros the Portege R830, Tecra R840, and Tecra R850

Toshiba‘s thin-but-full-powered Portege R700 was such a hit among business types that the company is now designing other machines in its svelte image. Tosh just unveiled the Tecra R840 and R850 — both of which ape the R700’s slim build — along with the Portege R830, a refresh to the R700 itself. The R830 looks the same, though it has a strip on the edge of the lid that looks like it’s made of magnesium alloy, but is actually plastic — a material that’s expected to improve the signals of the the various antennae housed underneath it. And — surprise, surprise — this refresh adds a USB 3.0 port and Intel Sandy Bridge processor, which the company says should bump the rated battery life to a max of 11 hours, up from eight. Not the corporate type? The company will also sell an $889 consumer version, the R835, that has a one-, not three-year, warranty, and loses enterprise-grade features — namely, Intel’s vPro technology, a docking connector, and an ExpressCard slot.

Meanwhile, the 14-inch R840 and 15.6-inch R850 are also getting Sandy Bridge CPUs, USB 3.0 ports, chiclet keyboards and all-around trimmer silhouettes. These laptops are now made with fiberglass-reinforced casing and the same Honeycomb rib structure that made last year’s R700 sturdy enough to grab one-handed. Of the two, the R840’s slim-down is more dramatic: it’s 25 percent thinner than the last-generation Tecra M11, as you can see in the comparison shots past the break. That’s largely thanks to Intel’s Airflow Cooling technology, which rearranges all of the heat-generating components in a row and draws in cool air from outside the notebook, instead of within. And Tosh claims the battery can last up to ten hours on a charge (11 with an SSD) — a vast improvement over the five and a half to six hours it promised the last time around. Moving up in size to the R850 will get you a number pad, but not that cooling technology. But it is about an inch thick at its thinnest, a point the PC maker is pleased as punch about. The R830, R840, and R850 start at $1,049, $899, and $879, respectively, and are available now on Toshiba’s site, with the consumer-friendly R835 on sale at Best Buy and through the Microsoft Store.

Motorola Xoom UK pricing official at £580 for 3G and £480 for WiFi-only

Motorola has now confirmed that the latest round of prices the Carphone Warehouse, PC World and other UK retailers are listing for its Xoom tablet are indeed the officially sanctioned price points for the Honeycomb slate. After being listed at £600 for the 3G model and £500 for the WiFi-only version initially, the 32GB-equipped 10-incher is now mercifully £20 cheaper, at £580 and £480 for each variant. A quick glance at Apple’s online store tells us that those levies match up exactly to what a corresponding 32GB version of the iPad 2 will cost you, signaling Motorola’s intent to at least be on par in terms of pricing. Stores are still showing the Xoom under a pre-order status for now, but that should be changing swiftly if Motorola wishes to live up to its promise of availability this very week.

ASUS claims Transformer is better than a generic tablet, is probably right

ASUS, you naughty tablet maker, you. Not content with giving your Eee Pad Transformer its own sitcom, you’re now coming at the US with an aggressive price and some rather eye-catching promo material to boot. Reminding the world that most tablets come without a keyboard and highlighting your tailor-made solution is all well and good, but did you have to make your “generic” slate look so iPad-ish?

[Thanks, Rob]

Xperia X10 goes on sale for just a dollar on contract, Gingerbread-flavored future makes it appealing

Okay, so a couple of weeks back, we wouldn’t have cared if Best Buy was willing to give us money to carry the Xperia X10, we still would have steered clear of its flawed UI and outdated software. But Sony Ericsson did a funny thing last Friday by promising to slap Gingerbread on this 4-inch sucker, which makes its current $1 contract price an eminently more intriguing proposition. We scouted out Best Buy’s web outlet and couldn’t find the X10 listed at all, so this could very well be a final stock clearance of the handset available on a store-by-store basis. If you’re tempted to jump on what’s looking like one of the cheapest Gingerbread devices for a while, you should be aware that the Android 2.3 update won’t be dropping until the end of Q2 at the earliest, so there will be a modicum of patience required.

[Thanks, Adam]

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer shows up at Best Buy for $400 (update: dock price)

Never mind the cringe-inducing advertising, ASUS has given us a much better reason to care about its Tegra 2-toting Eee Pad Transformer: a $400 price. The 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet (with 1280 x 800 resolution on an IPS display) has quickly moved from its Taiwanese release, through yesterday’s UK pricing announcement, to today showing up at Best Buy in the US, so we suspect its global shipping can’t be far off at all. With a sticker that’s a clear $99 less than the cheapest iPad and a good deal more affordable than its Android competition like the Xoom and G-Slate, the Transformer could yet take the tablet world by storm. Do take note that the keyboard dock that inspires this slate’s name is an optional extra, but given the starting price, the whole package might still end up less than what others will ask.

Update: Whack attack! Best Buy has pulled the Transformer page and it no longer shows up in search results on the site. Was the price too good to be true? Thanks, Jaime!

Update 2: It’s looking likely that the price info was accurate, as 16GB and 32GB versions have shown up elsewhere on the web for $400 and $500, respectively, though both are currently out of stock. Thanks, Sam and James!

Update 3: Ah, and now we have the price for the dock alone: $149. Thanks, Peter C.!

Best Buy Connect takes the 4G leap, now stocking over 20 WiMAX products

Took ’em long enough! Nearly a full year has elapsed between the time that Best Buy announced that its ‘Connect‘ program would support 4G and the time that it actually started stocked 4G gear. In fact, the company actually took the time to sign up for LightSquared’s wholesale LTE service a full week prior to making good on its commitment to Clearwire, which may or may not say anything about the future viability of WiMAX. At any rate, those who’d prefer to sift through mounds of peripherals (and be hounded at the exit by employees attempting to hawk product protection plans) in order to buy their 4G service can now do just that. BB Connect stores in the US will offer unlimited 4G service for $45 per month with a month-to-month or two-year contract, and if you choose the latter, the $35 activation fee will be waived and a hardware subsidy (“up to $150”) will be yours. So, you digging in, or feeling the tug of Long-Term Evolution?

Roku XD player comes directly to Best Buy shelves with no Netgear intervention

After receiving a boost from Netgear it appears Roku’s plans for 2011 include hitting retail under its own name, as it’s officially announced the Roku XD (no NTV250 branding) is available at Best Buy, as well as Fry’s and Radio Shack. Previously Roku only sold its own player through online but after breaking through 1 million units it’s apparently ready for bigger things. We’ve been informed the Netgear-branded boxes will sell out their inventory and be replaced by these going forward, so those interested in grabbing one for the archives may want to do so quickly. 2011 should see a big charge into retail from Roku as it seeks to stay one step ahead of the media streaming competition and this is just the first step; for now one can only wonder exactly what the next move will be.
