Australian Town Changes Name to “Speedkills” to Promote Traffic Safety

gizmondo enzo.jpg

Drive the speed limit. That’s the succinct message being driven home by a town in Victoria, Australia, which is changing its name from “Speed” to “Speedkills,” in hopes of raising awareness for traffic safety. The name change will be in effect for the month of March.

Said Phil Reed,  a spokesman for the country’s Transportation Accident Commission, “Most people recognize that drink driving is a socially unacceptable activity, they are less convinced about the merits of speed. Our underpinning business objective here is to make the issue of speeding [as] socially unacceptable as drink driving.”
Speed has a population of 45 people. Its Facebook page, on the other hand, is doing much better, currently boasting more than 34,000 supporters. The name change became “official” when the page hit more than 10,000 in less than 24 hours.

Facebook App Lets Users Stalk the Newly Single

breakupo notifier.jpg

Looking to snag someone on the rebound? That’s kind of the whole point of social networking, right? It’s certainly the raison d’etre for the not-so-subtly titled “Breakup Notifier.” The app trolls Facebook for you, so you can comfort and eventually needle your way into the arms of a newly single friend–just like a good friend should.

The app lets you make a list of the friends/coworkers/classmates who you’d like to, you know, get to know better. It’ll send you an alter every time someone on that list changes their relationship status to single. As the app’s tagline puts it, “You like someone. They’re in a relationship. Be the first to know when they’re out of it.”

That’s not creepy at all, right? I’m asking for a friend.

Facebook Messenger iPhone app gives you yet another VoIP option, Zuckerberg yet another good idea

Think Facebook chat is cool? How’s about a billion Facebook chats… with your voice. A company by the name of Crisp App has just pushed out an iOS program that may or may not be pulled at any time. You see, the app essentially enables iPod touch and iPhone users to call their Facebook friends (even if they’re logged on via the web) using a VoIP protocol, but there doesn’t appear to be any affiliation with Zuckerberg and co. It also allows chatters to shoot over pictures, browse message history, view a friend’s wall, use emoticons, receive instant replies with Apple Push Notifications and setup sound notifications. Naturally, it supports background operation, but according to GigaOM, there’s still a significant amount of lag present while calling. Still, if you spend more time on Facebook than digging through your standard contact list, you may want to part ways with $2.99 now and pray for a fix in the future — we get the feeling that time’s ticking on this one.

Google Social Search update makes your friends more relevant, difficult to ignore

Google’s been talking up its Social Search function for sometime, but up until now your friends’ tweets probably haven’t made it to the top of your search results — unless of course you’re besties with TMZ, and you’ve been searching the Miley Cyrus bong salvia rip again. Thankfully, it looks as if that could change with El Goog’s latest update to the socially minded search function, which now mixes updates from your contacts’ various online accounts, like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, in with the standard search fare — pulling them up from their previous position at the bottom of your results. Google’s also included a photo and annotation to show the origins of relevant links, and given you the ability to manage how you connect your accounts — either publicly through your profile or privately through your account. The new functions started rolling out yesterday, which means you could be seeing a whole lot more from those contacts you regretted friending in the first place. Isn’t social media a wonderful / disastrous thing?

Facebook Adds Gay-Friendly Relationship Options

Thumbnail image for I 'LIKE' You-Facebook Valentine.jpg

Facebook this week added two new relationship statuses that will make it easier for gay users to define their situations on the popular social network. “In a Domestic Partnership” and “In a Civil Union” will be added to the list, alongside “Single,” “Married,” “Engaged,” In a Relationship,” “In an Open Relationship,” “Divorced,” “Separated,” and “Widowed.”

The new statuses are now available in the U.S. and are set to be rolled out in addition countries, soon. Says Facebook, “This has been a highly requested feature from users. We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.”
Mashable points out that the site also teamed up with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) last year, to help curb gay-targeted cyber bullying on the site.
Now that wasn’t so complicated, was it?

Is it Ever OK to Leave Voicemail Anymore? [Etiquette]

The ubiquity of voicemail made sense when our phones lived in the kitchen, not our pockets—before SMS and twitter and the dozens of other ways we now stay perma-connected. So when does it make sense to use voicemail? More »

Rinspeed BamBoo electric concept is world’s largest HTC Flyer dock

Talk about your cross promotions. The Rinderknecht-built Rinspeed BamBoo concept electric car looks to be the stuff of a gadget nerd’s dreams. Unfortunately, that dream resembles a dystopian nightmare envisioned by a Neal Stephenson novel whereby everything we own is sponsored, trivial, and slathered in corporate logos. But hey, it’s just a concept, and production vehicles never look like the original idea so anything goes… and we mean anything. To start with, the breadbox-inspired dash features a Siemens VDO display with a docking station in the glovebox for the new HTC Flyer tablet. The BamBoo dash is flanked by flowery JBL GreenEdge speakers and the starter key is styled after a Swiss army knife. And if we’re not mistaken, there’s a webcam extended off a stalk from the center of the dash. An interesting piece of work right on down to the cluster of old school throw switches for the wipers, lights, hazards, etc. But that’s just the cockpit.

The radiator grill has been replaced by an internet-connected “identiface,” developed by Daimler subsidiary MBtech, whereby the occupant can display any number of messages to onlookers from Facebook or Twitter, for example, or even the radio station preset you’re currently jamming. The inflatable rear seats are removable as is the inflatable waterproof roof developed by Tecnotex that doubles as a beach blanket. The whole kit is powered by a 54 kW electric motor capable of a 120km/h top speed and battery capable of pushing the sporty golf cart some 105 kilometers before requiring a recharge from an RWE intelligent charging station. Look for it to make its big reveal at the Geneva Motor Show. Until then, head over to Autoblog to feast on their gallery of images with a few choice shots added below.

[Thanks, Tim]

Gemalto puts Facebook on a SIM chip, Zuckerberg’s plan for world domination coming along nicely

Smart card guru Gemalto is going to help Mark Zuckerberg take over the world! Ok, not really, but the company has made it possible to put Facebook on just about every GSM phone on earth by running it on a SIM chip. This allows every poke, friend request, and wall post to be transmitted by SMS — meaning no data plan required — so that the non-smartphone crowd can access Facebook on the go too. Gemalto, using only the brightest and most creative marketing minds out there, has named the solution “Facebook for SIM.” Users get a free trial for an undisclosed period of time before a subscription for the service becomes necessary — carriers are positively salivating at the prospect of all that extra SMS traffic lining their already deep pockets, no doubt. We knew that Mark had big plans for putting Facebook on phones, but we didn’t figure that dumbphones would get to join in the social networking fun. Finally, a chicken in every pot and a Facebook phone (or three) in every home.

Facebook to create “Facebook Diaries”

This article was written on February 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

“The Future of TV is not on TV. It’s the Internet.” You’ve heard that a few times recently, haven’t you? That’s what movie-maker/ producer R.J. Cutler has to say about his reasoning for producing “Facebook Diaries,” an online movie which will be composed of “compelling and engaging and dramatic, and powerful and worth of telling” stories of 18-24 year olds on Facebook.

Facebook Diaries will be composed of 10 half-hour episodes which will air later in the year.  Each episode will include video clips that have been uploaded by Facebook users on topics like “who am I?” “heartbreak,” and life during wartime.”

This is the first time that Facebook has even step foot into video uploads, and still, they’re doing it in their own style. They’ve partnered up with Comcast for this venture with their Ziddio video upload site. Users will be able to upload their video’s for this contest on Ziddio. Part of the deal includes sponsorship and advertising.

With 16 million users and a demographic of 18-24 year olds, Comcast is pretty happy to get in on this deal. Elizabeth Schimel who is the senior vice president of entertainment for Comcast Interactive Media says,”We’re tapping into Facebook’s very large and very young demographic.”

–Other Facebook Stuff–

Facebook has just added a new feature which will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer research charity.  Users will be able to give eachother “gifts” or tiny tokens of appreciation.  Each token (they’re all pictured above) will cost $1.00 and they can be given to your friends privately or publicly.  Each user will have a “Gift Box” on their profile where the gifts will be displayed.

The net proceeds for the month of February will go to the Komen for the Cure.

Lil Wayne vs. Oreo: Rapper Crumbles Cookie’s Dreams to Set Facebook World Record

lil_wayne_FB.jpgIt appears more people like convicted rap stars than delicious chocolate cookies with vanilla frosting inside. That’s right, Lil Wayne has thwarted Oreo’s attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most “Likes” on Facebook.

Lil Wayne asked his 20 million Facebook fans to “Like” his post so that he could break the Guinness World Record for most “Likes” on a post in 24 hours. Within an hour, the rapper had close to 200,000 “Likes,” leaving Oreo in the dust with only 56,615 at that time.

According to Mashable, Lil Wayne’s digital manager, Mazy Kazerooni, said she wants people to think of Lil Wayne like they do Bieber and Gaga.

At the time of this post, Lil Wayne had 357,718 “Likes,” and Oreo had only 75,505. It is indeed a sad day for cookie-lovers. I wonder if they have Oreos at Rikers?
