iOS 4.1 jailbreak on the way after bootrom exploit discovery

So let’s see, how long has iOS 4.1 been out in the open for public consumption? We make it less than 24 hours, yet already some earnest jail busters have managed to liberate it from Apple’s control freak clutches. It’s still a fair distance away from an easily executable jailbreak, but it’s looking like it’ll work on iPhone 4, the latest-gen iPod touch, and the iPad, covering all the freshest bases of Apple hardware. Now it’s just a matter of waiting it out.

iOS 4.1 is live, available to download right now

If you can just put down Angry Birds for one minute and plug your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 2nd generation, iPod touch 3rd generation, or iPod touch 4th generation into iTunes, you should be in for a pleasant non-surprise: iOS 4.1 is finally out and ready for your consumption. It’s not a huge update, but Game Center is an exciting addition (for the few, proud devices that are getting it), and we’re sure your face will be happy to stop getting accused for iPhone 4 hang-ups with the long overdue proximity sensor fix (shots of the changelog are after the break). Let us know how 4.1 is treating you in comments below.

Mophie’s $80 Juice Pack Air ships to power-hungry iPhone 4 owners

My, how far we’ve come. Believe it or not, Mophie’s Juice Pack pack is in its seventh generation of product development, with the latest ‘Air‘ supporting Apple’s polarizing iPhone 4. For those unaware, these cases nearly double the battery life of the phone they’re wrapped around, and better still, it acts as protection against drops and dropped calls. Fancy that! This little guy is said to provide up to six extra hours of 3G talk time, 36 hours of bonus audio playback or nine hours of video playback. It’s shipping now, just like we said, to those willing to part ways with $79.95, and it’s available in any color you want, so long as it’s black.

Nuu Mini Key adds a bulky physical keyboard to the iPhone 4

For all the benefits of touchscreen keyboards, there are many who maintain a steadfast allegiance to the gods of tactile feedback. So how does this Mini Key case with sliding QWERTY for the iPhone 4 strike you? Unfortunately, the keys were a bit hard to press on the backlit prototype keypad handled by Engadget Spanish, and it links to the iPhone via Bluetooth, not the iPhone’s dock connector (there’s a cutout at the bottom for a cable to pass through). And no, all that added bulk still doesn’t include an extended life battery pack. Perhaps some of this will change before it goes on sale before the end of the year for $60 / €60, we doubt it though.

iPhone 4 gets stuffed inside Canon SLR body

While it’s far from the most practical of ideas, people just can’t seem to stop trying to make their iPhones more SLR-like. Joining that illustrious group is one Aniebres who, typos aside, has built one of the most impressive contraptions to date. We’re still waiting to see what the end results look like, but the hardware side of things looks to be surprisingly solid, with the iPhone 4 slotting in with a satisfying click, while the entire lens mechanism has been shifted over to line up with the iPhone’s camera (and make room for an Apple sticker). Head on past the break for a quick video of the rig.

[Thanks, John]

iOS 4.1 confirmed for September 8th on Apple’s UK website

According to Apple’s UK website, iOS 4.1 will hit on Wednesday, September 8th. The US website still displays the non-committal “Coming Soon” message, so we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled. We’re going to go ahead and guess that all those shiny new iPods will come to retail that day too… but don’t hold us to that one. Like we said, it’s only a guess.

[Thanks, Luca]

WSJ: iPhone 4 to be offered by Vodafone and O2 in Germany as T-Mobile loses exclusivity

The last bastion of Applephone exclusivity in Europe is about to be toppled, according to the Wall Street Journal, as Deutsche Telekom is said to be preparing for the loss of its iPhone 4 monopoly ahead of this year’s holiday shopping season. Citing separate sources familiar with the matter, this report suggests that Vodafone and O2’s German arms are earnestly reaching out for Apple’s latest and greatest, and while distribution deals haven’t yet been finalized, negotiations have reached an “advanced stage.” Much as with O2’s UK exclusivity deal, Apple looks to have opted against extending its arrangement with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in an effort to reach the widest possible consumer base. Makes a lot of sense to us, now how about doing the same back home?

Mophie Juice Pack Air: coming to double your iPhone 4 battery next week

So, you’ve been waiting for a Mophie Juice Pack for your iPhone 4? You’re not alone. Well, we have word that it’ll be available as soon as next week for $79. We even managed to get hands on with a prototype that looked and felt pretty tight considering the fact that it doubles the iPhone’s non-removable battery. The Juice Pack Air features pass-through USB charging and sync with iTunes, an integrated 4 LED charge status, and a standby switch the shuts off the juice turning the appendage into a rather attractive (albeit, heavy with a 1500mAh capacity battery), soft-grip case. Now you know.
