Nook outsells Kindle in March?

Given DigiTimesspotty record when it comes to pushing rumors you might be inclined to read “Digitimes Research” as a kind of oxymoron. Unfortunately, as long as Amazon refuses to publish specifics with regard to units sold, these analyst estimates are as good as it gets. What’s interesting is that DigiTimes‘ checks at upstream suppliers reveal that Barnes & Noble’s Nook accounted for 53 percent of all e-book readers shipped to US vendors in March. Interesting since Kindle is Amazon’s bestselling product and an increasing share of the company’s revenue is based on sales of electronics and general merchandise. Still, it’s our guess that Amazon doesn’t care too much about selling its own hardware (it’s in the business of selling other people’s content and goods). Besides, the Kindle app is already available on a wide range of devices including Apple’s iPad and a wide variety of smartphones. One place you can’t install it, however, is on the steadily improving Nook.

AMD’s six-core Phenom II X6 1055T CPU now shipping, 1090T up for pre-order

We’d been assured that AMD‘s days of missing ship dates ad naseum were over, but there’s nothing like a little action to prove that your words mean business. Just a month after unearthing clock speeds and proposed release quarters for AMD’s gaggle of six-core Phenom II X6 processors, two of ’em have already popped up on Amazon. The 2.8GHz Phenom II X6 1055T is actually shipping as we speak for $222.29, while the 3.2GHz Phenom II X6 1090T is up for pre-order at $324.65. The lower-end 2.6GHz 1035T and 3.0GHz 1075T are both nowhere to be found (yet, anyway), and the mysterious 1095T isn’t even supposed to pop up anywhere until Q4. So, who’s getting themselves a new slab of silicon? Don’t be bashful.

[Thanks, Brian]

Target To Sell Amazon Kindle Starting April 25

kindle 2 side.jpg

Amazon and Target on Thursday confirmed that the online retailer’s Kindle e-book reader will be sold at select Target stores starting April 25.

The Kindle, which sells for $259, will be available at the flagship downtown Minneapolis Target store and 102 south Florida locations, with more stores added throughout the year. Since its November 2007 debut, the Kindle has only been sold on Amazon.com, so the Target deal is the first time it will be available at a brick-and-mortar store.

“We strive to enhance our product offerings to include surprising products and services at great values so we’re proud to be the first brick-and-mortar retailer to sell Kindle, allowing our guests to feel how lightweight and easy on the eyes Kindle is,” Mark Schindele, senior vice president at Target, said in a statement.

Amazon also confirmed the deal on its first quarter earnings call this afternoon.

“It’s starting with a small number of stores but we’re very pleased to be working with Target, and we’re very pleased to have even more customers see Kindle and have the opportunity to purchase Kindle,” said Amazon’s chief financial officer, Tom Szkutak. “So that’s why we’re doing it and we’re very excited to do it.”

ASUS Eee PC 1005PR up for pre-order: $400 for your own HD savvy netbook

We had a hunch that ASUS’ Eee PC 1005PR would come in at under $400, and sure enough, that’s exactly where it has landed here on US soil. A month and change after its introduction, the 10.1-inch netbook — along with its Broadcom Crystal HD chip, 1.66GHz Atom N450 CPU and 1,366 x 768 panel — is now up for pre-order at Amazon. Frankly, it’s one of the better specced machines that we’ve seen at this level, though the claimed 11 hours of battery life does feel a bit too good to be true. At any rate, you can claim your spot in line right now by parting with $399.99, but there’s still no clear word on when it’ll ship. Shouldn’t be too awfully long now, though.

Kindle officially going on sale at Target on April 25

Looks like that blurry leak we got was dead-on: Target and Amazon just officially announced that the Kindle will be sold in the Minneapolis Target flagship store and 102 southern Florida stores starting April 25, with the rest of the chain getting units as the year goes on. That’s the first time Jeff Bezo’s e-reader will be sold in a brick-and-mortar store, a big step for Amazon we’re taking as a response to Barnes & Noble’s heavy in-store promotion of the Nook — although Target already carries the Sony Reader line, so it’s not totally crazy. We’ll see how this affects sales in the months to come — and whether or not Target follows this up by selling the iPad as well. Full press release after the break.

Update: A kind, anonymous tipster has sent us in that little photo of what appears to be the Kindle’s Target packaging. Thanks!

Nintendo ships Wii Classic Controller Pro to sweaty-palmed Americans

Nothing like coming through on a promise, right? You bet. If you’ll recall, the Big N assured us all back in January that the jumbo-sized Wii Classic Controller Pro would begin shipping to America in April, and sure enough, that’s exactly what it has done. After giving the Japanese a few months head-start, both the white and black accessories are now shipping from none other than Amazon for the tidy sum of $19.99 apiece. And yes, gift wrapping is available for a nominal fee.

PS3 owners eligible for cash refund after ‘Other OS’ removal?

Admit it, most of you don’t use the “Other OS” option on your PS3, do you? That’s ok, we don’t either, at least not regularly. Nevertheless, it’s irksome, nay, vexing that Sony had the audacity to pull it; that feature was part of the deal bargained when we purchased the unit after all. Forum moderator, “lapetus,” over at NeoGAF decided to take on the man by invoking European directive 1999/44/EC, a consumer protection law that requires goods to be “fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase.” That little tactic earned lapetus a refund of £84.00 from Amazon without physically returning the console even though his (?) PS3 was well out of warranty. Oh just you never mind that Sony’s user agreement claims the ability to revise settings and features without limitation to, “prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3 system.” In other words, request your refund before installing Geohot’s hacked 3.21 firmware.

Optoma PK201 pico projector now shipping, PK301 up for pre-order

We’re still holding out for the faraway 1080p pico projector, but for those who need a display in their pocket before 2023, Optoma‘s latest aren’t half bad options. The PK201 and PK301, both of which made their debut at CES earlier in the year, now have product pages at Amazon, with the former being listed as in stock ($299.99) and shipping this very moment. The other guy is up for pre-order at $399.99, though you’ll get an 854 x 480 resolution output with either. ‘Course, you may want to hold out for the 301 and its 50 lumens of brightness if the 201’s 20 lumens seem a little weak, but hey, the ball’s in your court now, vaquero.
