European blue Wii bundle takes Mario & Sonic to the Olympics, sends US gamers home without a medal

You didn’t expect the Olympics to land in London without a video game tie-in snapping at its heels, did you? Of course not, but did you expect it to be bundled with a powder-blue console? Here’s the skinny: Nintendo’s Mario & Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games Limited Edition Pack pairs the outfit’s upcoming Gamecube-free Wii refresh with the ghetto fabulous chromatic pop of the 1970s’ tackiest grooviest tuxedo craze. Like the “Family Edition” bundle that clued us in on the hardware refresh, this package has only been announced for Europe, and there’s still no word on how much either set will cost. Nintendo of Europe says they will be announcing additional bundles later this year, but if you just have to have a matching console for your blue Wiimote, you can pick one up November 18th.

3DS gets a Monster Hunter TriG paint job, makes the limited edition love Japan-only

As Nintendo is wont to do, a new assortment of colorful 3DS handhelds will soon be flooding the market — in Japan. Yes, it’s time once again for that tried-and-true approach of treating gamers in the company’s homeland to special edition packs. This time out, it’s the release of Capcom’s Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G that’ll ring in the above pictured red-on-white portable, in addition to Ninty’s recently unveiled slide pad add-on. Unfortunately, interested parties’ll have to choose between the 20,800 yen (about $271) game plus console bundle, or merely opt for the hardware-less 6,990 yen (about $91) peripheral and software option — both available on December 10th. If neither of the above has your inner Big N fanboy aflutter, you can always drop 15,000 yen (about $195) on that bland Ice White version slated for October 20th. Speak Japanese? Then hit up the source links below to parse through the official pressers.

New Poll: What Game System do you Play the Most, or Wish you Owned?

This article was written on January 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Last week we asked “When was the last time that you used a floppy disk.” Apparently, the floppy disk is becoming a thing of the past! For 53% of you, it’s been a thing of the past for at least five years! In second place with 22% of the votes was the response, “it’s been a few years,” and third place was “during the last year” with 8 percent of the votes.

Next up, we want to know what game system do you play the most, or wish you owned.  I’m sure some of you own multiple systems, but tell us which one is played the most.  If you don’t own one, but you have one on your wish list, which one is it?

French court reverses DS flash cart ruling, Nintendo smiles

Nearly two years ago, a French court dismissed a lawsuit that Nintendo filed against a group of vendors accused of illegally selling DS flash carts. At the time, the game-maker argued that sales of the cartridges should be halted on the grounds that they could be used to illegally pirate software, but the presiding judge thought differently, countering that the R4-like devices could be used to develop homebrews or other DIY projects. Last week, however, the Paris Court of Appeals overturned the ruling, in a decision that Nintendo has met with understandable delight. In a statement released today, the company confirmed that Divineo SARL and five other flash cart retailers must pay a total of €460,000 in criminal fines, along with €4.8 million in damages to Nintendo, as ordered by the appeals court. Details behind the ruling remain vague, though Nintendo hailed it as a “strong message to French companies… that such activities are illegal and will not be tolerated,” and that convicted vendors will “risk prison terms, face substantial fines and obligations to pay damages.” Sail past the break to read Nintendo’s statement, in full.

Deluxe Power Grip bulks up your 3DS with extended battery life, charges over USB

The Nyko Power Pak+ does an admirable job of keeping Nintendo’s 3DS out of the red, but what if you want an extended battery that won’t fit in your pocket? Look no further than CTA Digital’s Deluxe Power Grip, the 3DS cradle that doubles your console’s bulk to match its newly extended battery life. The grip’s form mimics that of an Xbox 360 controller, replete with a 2600mAh battery pack and a game-card storing kickstand. The peripheral’s grips seem to lend better access to the handheld’s awkwardly positioned D-pad, but its real triumph comes in the option to charge the unit via USB; folks looking for a standardized charging solution can kick Nintendo’s official AC adapter to the curb. Comfy grips and USB compatibility will set you back about $30. Not convinced? Barrel roll past the break for the official PR and a cheesy overview video.

Giant wall console lets you Game & Watch while you wait

Before there was a 3DS and DS — heck, before there was a Game Boy, there was Game & Watch, Nintendo’s portable, sometimes dual-screened gaming line from the ’80s. But while the gaming giant has long since moved on, nostalgia for their platform-based frustration lives on in the form of this large piece of interactive wall art, a case that uses an Arduino and Python script to bring folks with a little spare time the sort of retro gaming that will make them long from the graphical power of the original NES. Check out more images of the device in the Source link below.

Play Wii games on your Android tablet via network streaming (video)

In case you haven’t met him already, Obiwan222222 represents the minimalist alternative to hardcore modding. He’s already shown us Wii games running on the PSP and iPod Touch, and now he’s pulled off the same trick on his Asus Transformer. It’s all done with network streaming: he loads up Super Mario Galaxy 2 on his PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator and then transmits it to his tablet via the Splashtop HD remote desktop app for Android. He also throws in an Xbox 360 controller to make things look more confusing than they really are. We’d obviously worry about lag with this type of setup, but the video after the break makes it look just about playable.

Nintendo 3DS extended slide pad add-on, first hands-on

Nintendo may be AWOL on the TGS show floor (as usual), but that’s not stopping Capcom from strutting the big-N’s hardware in its stead — we dropped by its booth for a gameplay-free handling of the 3DS extended slide pad add-on. The control-extending cradle is every bit as bulky as it looks, killing any hope we had of cramming the rig into our pocket. The trade-off? It’s much more comfortable to hold than the naked 3DS, giving our meaty hands a smooth, contoured surface to grip. The new right-hand circle pad feels just as solid as the handheld’s dedicated pad, and didn’t significantly obstruct our access to the 3DS’ face buttons. All in all, the cradle is a comfortable, if awkwardly large extension to the 3DS that doesn’t seem to compromise the handheld’s existing input. Hit up the gallery below to size up the plump peripheral for yourself.

Super Pixel Bros is Super Mario for squares (video)

Is the complexity of regular Super Mario Bros. getting you down? Good news: modder Retro Brad has been putting a lot of time into his own version of the game, recreating levels of the original title on an 8 x 8 LED matrix, with all of its characters represented by a single pixel. Below that screen is an LCD, which lets users keep track of their score, lives and level, while a Monofonic Audio Chip offers sound effects played through a built-in speaker. All of this is housed in a portable eight-button system that, for the record, is decidedly less clunky than Nintendo’s new circle-pad add-on for the 3DS. Video of Super Pixel Bros in action after the break.

Review: Star Fox 64 3D for Nintendo 3DS

When considering Nintendo’s top franchises few people would note Star Fox as being among them. Even so, the series is time-tested, hardcore-gamer approved, and unique among Nintendo’s hall-of-famers. It was a memorable game on the SNES and a hit on the N64, so Nintendo is going back to the well and delivering what should be […]
