As many of you probably know the free Avast! Home is my antivirus of choice, and there is a new Beta available for people running the recently released Windows Home Server (WHS). Anyone can download and install the Beta, and one of the big advantages that you’ll receive by using it is the central management screen that’s integrated into the WHS Console pictured above.

From within the WHS Console you’ll be able to do things like scan any computer on the network that’s running Avast!, update the virus definitions, adjust scheduled scans, or view the scanning history. To access Avast! on other computers you’ll also need to run a Beta version of Avast! Home or Professional editions on each of the client machine on the network.

A forum has been started for Avast! WHS Edition, but I’ve seen no mention of cost for the application. The regular Avast! Server Edition runs for several hundred dollars, and I’m not sure if they are willing to let the consumer server version go at no cost. Avast! plans on making the Beta period short-lived because come November a lot of the pre-built Windows Home Server devices will be shipping, and at that time we should have a better idea of the Avast! WHS price.

It’s not often that a Mattel toy targets the 18 – 128 demographic, but we’ll be frank — the Mindflex has us all sorts of intrigued. Originally introduced at this year’s CES, said game is a brain-powered fun-fest that relies on intense mental activity to control the height of a ball suspended in a column of air. Early on, we heard that it would land sometime during this year for $80, but it seems as if only one of those factoids will prove true. Indeed, Amazon has it listed to ship on October 1st, which gives proactive parents plenty of time to stock up for the holidays. Unfortunately, the price seems to have inched up by a Jackson, as it’s currently up for pre-order at $99.99. Rest assured, however, that said price is far less than what you’ll pay on eBay if you’re empty-handed come December 20th.

Slowly but surely, those oh-so-juicy details are leaking out about Endless Ideas’ upcoming duo of e-readers. We’ve now learned that the BeBook mini will boast the same specifications as the original BeBook, save for the much more compact 5-inch display; if all goes well, it should be available for purchase this summer for €199 ($270). Moving on to the BeBook 2, we’ve learned that it will include both WiFi and 3G access right out of the box, and the company is currently working with mobile operators in Germany and France in hopes of providing Kindle-like data access for on-the-go book downloads. Unfortunately, it looks like the asking price of that one will hover in the €350 ($476) to €400 ($544) range, but you can check out a Dutch interview with the new announcements just past the break.

Oh, goodie goodie! Merely ten days after the D5000 was formally introduced to the world — and just hours after Amazon’s pre-order page went live — we’re now being told that Nikon’s first DSLR with an articulating display will be shipping in three short days. Starting on April 27th, the cam will begin making its way out to those who pulled the trigger early on… at least in kit form. We don’t expect the body-only configuration to leave the docks for at least a week or so later, but you can rest assured we’ll be giving one a go and letting you know if it’s worth the cheddar.

We’ve been made privy to some Sprint planning documentation that implies that the carrier is looking to get all its Pre ducks in a row by May 16, which would suggest that there’s no way in hell it’s launching any earlier than that. Ultimately, that could mean we’re looking at a launch on the 17th — a Sunday, as Sprint launches often are — or any time after that, but since Palm continues to reaffirm its first half commitment, we’d say that we’re now down to a window between 5/17 and 6/30. Awesome.
