Pioneer engineers Android-powered cyclocomputer, might remind Landis to stop doping

Think Android has reached its limit when it comes to applications? Think again. Pioneer has conjured up a new cyclocomputer, and compared to the antediluvian rivals available on the market today, this one looks like a bona fide supercomputer. It’s designed for mounting on the bike’s handlebars, where riders can then see speed, cadence, heart rate, and power at a glance. The device is engineered to play nice with the ANT+ wireless specification, and it can also pull data from optional crank sensors that can be installed to monitor one’s pedaling force. Furthermore, it’s equipped with GPS, and we’re guessing it’s a prime candidate for running Google’s own My Tracks app. There’s no time table for release, but we’re guessing the International Cycling Union will have one out in no time… one that continuously tests riders for illicit substances, of course. OmniVision’s OV10810 image sensor handles 1080p video recording, 10 megapixel image capture

OmniVision has just let loose its OV10810, hailed as the first native 16:9 CMOS image sensor to enable simultaneous 1080p HD video recording and ten megapixel image captures. The chip is built upon the company’s 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel architecture, and it’s obviously aimed at digicams, camcorders and higher-end smartphones. Generally speaking, any camcorder that can snag stills on the side does so at a terribly low resolution, but this bantam slab of silicon would obviously serve as a solution. Withings fittingly debuts iPhone-connected blood pressure monitor at CES

Trust us — no one on the Engadget staff wants to know what their blood pressure is right about now. For those trapped in the hurricane that is CES, there’s probably no better product to have laying around than this… but only if you’re looking to confirm your suspicions about being in a high-stress career. Withings, the company best known for its connected scales, has just revealed the planet’s first iPhone-connected blood pressure monitor, with an aim to make measuring vitals as easy as pie for iOS users. The idea is fairly simple: just plug the arm band into your iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, dial up the gratis app and start the process. All of the data is logged on the user’s secure online space, and there’s even a secure sharing feature that’ll beam your abnormally high rates right to your frightened physician. It’ll go on sale tomorrow around the globe, with the asking price set at $129 / €129.

Kinect rumored to have PC support in waiting

There’s been no shortage whatsoever of PC control schemes using Kinect, but up until now, every bit of it has been without Microsoft’s official blessing. Of course, the company eventually caved to the massive amount of hacking going on and confessed that it didn’t have any hard feelings for those giving it a whirl, but is it really fixing to take things one step further with bona fide PC support? That’s the talk emanating from South Korea, where game developer GamePrix has reported that at least one of its titles (Divine Soul, if you must know) is “scheduled to support Kinect.” Continuing on about the game, the company’s Jason Lim was quoted as saying that “Kinect will soon be available as a new PC controller,” but naturally, we’ve our doubts. For starters, why wouldn’t Microsoft be working with a more major developer if honest-to-goodness PC-Kinect interactions were planned? Secondly, there’s a definite possibility that GamePrix could really be referring to unofficial support, which would make everything seem a lot more sensible. Either way, we’ll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground for more, and with GDC under three months away, we ought to know the truth sooner rather than later.

Sony buys back Toshiba’s Cell plant for 50 billion yen, makes a killing and plans a CMOS fab

Looks like Toshiba’s Cell processor ambitions didn’t quite pan out — Japanese news sources are reporting that the company’s selling its Nagasaki manufacturing plant back to Sony for 50 billion yen, or roughly $597 million in US money. Considering that Toshiba originally purchased the semiconductor facility for 100 90 billion yen (then $835 million) back in 2008, it seems like Sony’s making out like a bandit here — and it may have just found the perfect place to build more CMOS chips for its high-end camera lineup, too. Sony reportedly told the Nikkei Business Daily that it may repurpose the facility to produce HD image sensors for cameras and smartphones. What will happen to the chip that launched 40 million PS3s and a graphics co-processor or two? With any luck, we’ll find out at CES 2011 quite soon.

Prototype Pleo motion capture exoskeleton up for grabs: $2,400 OBO


Still haven’t nailed down the perfect Christmas gift for that special someone in your life? Shame on you. Just kidding. But on the real, if you’ve got $2,397.99 and a lust for robotics, there’s hardly a better buy available right now than this. The concoction you’re peering at above isn’t apt to go on sale to the general public again anytime soon, as it’s a rare prototype motion capture exoskeleton that was used by (the now-defunct) Ugobe in the creation of Pleo. Word has it that this suit was vital to the R&D efforts surrounding the first edition of the outfit’s robotic dinosaur, with one Caleb Chung fitting in and hulking about as computers analyzed and recorded movements. So far as we can tell, all of the circuits and wires are still here, meaning that you actually could use this for R&D of your own provided you had the right equipment to read it. Unfortunately, it’ll cost a small fortune to ship a 350 pound crate anywhere outside of the continental US, but for those of you currently living overseas… well, here’s your excuse to relocate.

Kinect hack lets you reenact Big piano scene (video)

The only limit to the applications Kinect can be put to is imagination. The more of it you have, the more things you can use the peerless Xbox 360 peripheral to achieve. To wit, some eager chaps have put together the Keyboard Anywhere hack, which employs a little Python and the libfreenect library to offer up a piano keyboard on any flat surface of almost any size. You can practice your Mozart concertos on a desk, or, as they so ably demonstrate, imagine yourself as a young Tom Hanks skipping along on the FAO Schwarz floor piano in the movie Big. It’s all up to you.

Futuristic water bottle uses technology, science to let you know you’re thirsty

The future is a scary place, yes — but one thing we don’t need to fear is being unaware that we’re thirsty. Research and development firm Cambridge Consultants will be showing off its intriguing “i-dration” concept fitness water bottle at CES in a few weeks, combining a series of sensors on the bottle itself that communicate with an app you’ve got installed on your smartphone. The bottle will measure ambient temperature, how much fluid you’ve pounded, and how often you’ve consumed it; the phone, meanwhile, will use its accelerometer to measure how hard you’re working out and combine that with heart rate data from a chest strap. After crunching some numbers, the app determines whether you’re low on H2O — and if you are, it’ll make a blue light on the bottle pulse. If it seems like a roundabout way to stay hydrated… well, that’s because it is, but Cambridge’s angle is that this is a demonstrator for cool new ways that sensors can be tightly packed and integrated with smartphones to create “hardware apps.” Speaking of, we could use a tall, cool glass of water. EPFL’s fly-inspired 3D camera takes omnipresence to the third dimension (video)

Just in case you were concerned that the 3D revolution hadn’t yet taken over the scientific research field, EPFL is here to convince you that all is well. Researchers from a pair of EPFL laboratories have recently invented a fly-inspired dome camera that’s not only loaded down with cameras to snag views from (nearly) all angles, but also equipped with an output algorithm that constructs a bona fide 3D image. The trickeration lies within the hardware platform, which calculates depth on each camera image and then reconstructs a 3D visual based on how far away things truly are. That’s a far more sophisticated approach than the stereoscopic one used on existing 3D televisions, as the depth would (theoretically) change as your angle of view changed. There’s an outstanding patent application on the approach, and if the world at large latches on, we could see this thing used for “video surveillance, movie making, and creating backgrounds for video games.” Among other things, of course. Kinect turned into a quadrocopter radar (video)

Every night we go to bed thinking that we’ve finally seen the best Kinect hack done and every morning we wake up to see something even crazier concocted with Microsoft’s motion controller. Today, it’s been mounted atop a quadrocopter — yes, man’s future worst enemy — and utilized essentially as a 3D radar, facilitating the bot’s autonomous maneuvering around a predetermined track. The random introduction of obstacles is also handled in stride, leaving us equal parts impressed, apprehensive, and eager for more. See the video after the break.
