Wii Rowing Machine aims to sculpt abs, achieves belly laughs (video)
Posted in: controller, nintendo, nintendo wii, NintendoWii, Today's Chili, video, wiiCTA strikes again! The company known for its unorthodox (and rather silly) game controllers is back with a plastic drawbar / foot pedal combo that is supposed to be “very similar to a rowing machine you would find at the gym,” although we highly doubt it. Designed for games like Wii Sports Resort and Jillian Michaels’ Angry Sports Resort, this is something that would probably only enter your home as an ill-considered Christmas gift before gathering dust in the back of a closet, alongside your Bowling Ball and Football controllers. But we must admit, even if the company’s products are dubious, its infomercials are an endless source of entertainment. See for yourself after the break. As for the rowing machine, it’s up for pre-order now at Amazon, as if you care.

Nintendo, American Heart Association Promote Active Play
Posted in: nintendo, Today's Chili, video games, wiiNintendo is teaming up with the American Heart Association to promote its Wii consoles as a means to stay active.
Under the deal, Wii boxes will soon include the AHA brand, Nintendo and AHA will jointly host a health summit, and Nintendo consoles will be on display at future AHA health walks. They have also launched a Web site at activeplaynow.com.
“The two organizations come from different worlds but share the common goal of helping consumers discover how active-play video games contribute to healthy living,” according to the site.
The partnership focuses on the Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, and the original Wii console. Boxes for these products will soon include an AHA stamp of approval, and an encouragement to purchase active-play games.
Nintendo Wii gets American Heart Association’s stamp of approval
Posted in: nintendo, nintendo wii, NintendoWii, Today's Chili, video, wiiWhen we heard that Nintendo and the American Heart Association would be making an announcement today, we (and most everyone else) assumed that it would have something to do with Nintendo’s forthcoming Vitality Sensor. As it turns out, however, it’s something altogether more surprising — the AHA has announced that it’s actually putting its stamp of approval on the Wii itself (as well as Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort). That’s obviously a first for a video game console, and fairly unprecedented for the AHA — as ABC News points out, the association hasn’t seen fit to put its seal on other “active” things like baseball bats. It apparently had some small incentive to do so in this case, however, as the organization says it will be receiving a cool $1.5 million from Nintendo over three years as a result of the partnership. Head on past the break to see the AHA president explain the arrangement.
[Thanks, Katie]

Ridiculous Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory controller gives Steel Battalion fans new hope
Posted in: nintendo wii, NintendoWii, Today's Chili, wiiIf you’re a lover of unnecessarily large and comically styled controllers, chances are you’ve been a bit depressed lately with all this Sony Move and Microsoft Natal talk, tech that could do away with fancy add-ons altogether. But Hori, at least, is continuing to follow the righteous path of giant peripherals with this bodacious add-on for Square Enix’s Wii port of Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory, an arcade game with a name long enough to be worthy of such a mighty gamepad. Sadly, this collectible card game really only requires three buttons: a big red one, a big blue one, and the sword, which is simply pushed downward to activate special attacks. It pales in comparison to the two control sticks, three pedals, and 40 buttons of Steel Battalion, but sometimes it’s the visual impact that really counts.

Wii Controller Demo gets active, Android and Wiimote handle Donkey Kong on video
Posted in: Android, bluetooth, controller, Google, GoogleAndroid, nexus one, NexusOne, nintendo, Today's Chili, video, wiiWe knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as “Wii Controller IME”) was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn’t expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we’re kvetching or anything — and in fact, we’d argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin’ Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Whoa, we just spotted that this app is actually pikipirs’ completely free Wiimote Controller app (available now to download in alpha), which just so happened to surface at about the same time as Ryan Frawley’s Will Controller IME (also available now). The more the merrier, right?

Nintendo CEO: battle with Sony is over, Apple is the ‘enemy of the future’
Posted in: Apple, AppStore, business, console, gaming, industry, ipad, iPhone, ipod touch, IpodTouch, nintendo, nintendo wii, NintendoWii, playstation 3, Playstation3, ps3, psp, sony, Today's Chili, wiiBacking away from a previous position, are we Nintendo? Just a month after Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claimed that the iPhone OS (you know, that operating system used on the iPod touch, iPhone family and the iPad) wasn’t a “viable profit platform for game development,” along comes the company’s president to say that, in fact, Apple is the primary “enemy of the future.” That’s according to Times Online, who says that the Big N’s CEO (Satoru Iwata) feels that the battle with Sony is a “victory already won,” and who clearly believes that the next wave of gaming won’t be of the traditional sit-on-your-coach-and-slam-buttons variety. ‘Course, the PSP never has been able to hang with the DS family, but even the Wii has a ways to go before it catches the mighty PlayStation 2 in terms of global sales. Going forward, the company is purportedly looking to revive the element of “surprise” in Nintendo products, but it might be best served by simply catching up to the competition and supporting this wild concept known as “HD gaming” over “HDMI.”

Nintendo net profit declines for first time in six years, panic remains inadvisable
Posted in: DS, financial, financials, gaming, nintendo, nintendo wii, NintendoWii, sales, Today's Chili, wiiNintendo’s 2009 financial results have just been released and, shockingly enough, the company hasn’t been able to break its profit record yet again. In fact, annual net profit dipped — for the first time in six tenths of a decade — to $2.44 billion, a 12 percent drop from the previous fiscal year’s $2.79 billion. Sales of the Wii were down 21 percent year-on-year, but Nintendo still managed to shift 20 million units globally, so it’s not exactly all doom and gloom at Mario HQ. And while Microsoft and Sony are working on their own motion-sensing offerings, Ninty is reloading the only way it knows how — bringing the noir Wii to fashion-conscious Americans, and an all-new 3D portable console for the rest of us. Anyone willing to bet against Nintendo’s income sheet improving next year?

Nintendo’s black Wii console arrives early at Best Buy and Sam’s Club
Posted in: BestBuy, exclusive, nintendo, nintendo wii, NintendoWii, now shipping, NowShipping, ship, shipping, ships, Today's Chili, wii
Typical, isn’t it? A full four days before these things are supposed to go on sale to the North American masses, an image of Nintendo’s black Wii console has leaked from none other than Best Buy. This here shipment was actually received in the Great White North, but we’re more than confident that similar packages are hitting the shipping docks of Best Buy stores everywhere here in the US, too. You’ll notice that giant “Do Not Sell Before 05/09/2010” sticker there in the lower-right, but as we’ve seen in the past, all it takes is a pinch of airheadedness, a touch of charm and false sense of urgency to snag one early. Godspeed, Earthlings.
P.S. – The “old” Wii bundle is now on sale at Best Buy for $179.99 ($20 less than yesterday), and we suspect this will be a trend that continues to other retailers as the new packages roll out. Thanks, David!
Update: Seems these are arriving at Sam’s Club locations as well, though they aren’t to be sold until May 9th.

Wii Controller Demo brings your Wiimote and Android phone 2gether, 4ever
Posted in: Android, app, application, bluetooth, controller, gaming, Google, GoogleAndroid, nintendo, Software, Today's Chili, wiiRyan Frawley still has a fair bit of work ahead of him, but his Wii Controller Demo app for Android sure holds an awful lot of promise. Available now for no charge (though a $1 paid version is available for those who dig his work), this here software allows Android users to create a Bluetooth link between their Wii remote and handset, and then log input information on the mobile’s display. As of now, there’s not a whole lot of value outside of Wiimote troubleshooting, but it’s a few lines of code away from being able to act as a controller for gaming. Just think — a Wiimote, your Android phone, an emulator, an HDMI output and four other nerds surrounding your television. Needless to say, we’ll be keeping a close eye out for updates coming to this one.
[Thanks, Jonathan]
