Inhabitat’s Week in Green: high speed rail, augmented reality, and body broadband

The Week in Green is a new item from our friends at Inhabitat, recapping the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us.

It was a monumental week for efficient transportation as China unveiled plans to connect its high speed rail network all the way to Europe. We were also excited to see Solar Roadways unveil the first prototype of an energy-generating road that stands to transform our freeways into power conduits. Meanwhile, one 74 year old man is going solo and blazing his own trail across the states aboard a solar powered stroller.

Inhabitat also showcased several amazing feats of architecture this week. One of the world’s first skyscrapers with built-in wind turbines is rising above London, while designer Enrico Dini has created a gigantic 3D printer that is able to create entire buildings out of stone.

Finally, we explored all sorts of ways that people are getting wired – literally. Students at the University of Washington are working on a set of solar-powered augmented reality contact lenses that may just bring terminator vision to the masses, while Spanish scientists are working on nanochips that can be that can be implanted into human body cells to detect diseases earlier. And in case you haven’t heard, “me-fi” is the new WiFi as researches have discovered a way to transmit 10mbps broadband data through a human arm.

Infinite USB plug is a big idea for small conveniences

In a classic case of “why didn’t we think of this first,” Chinese design student Gonglue Jiang has shown us a new way for overcoming the limitations imposed by the scarcity of USB ports on some computers. Instead of forcing you to constantly hot swap devices into that one port, Gonglue’s Infinite USB plugs keep all your cables connected, thereby facilitating those smartphone syncs, spy camera recharges, and — for the ultimate irony — maybe even a USB hub. If you’re thinking this would be brought down by a bout of bandwidth starvation once you start some USB multitasking, you’re probably right, but power shortages shouldn’t be an issue as the author has also come up with an external power connector that joins into his Infinite chain of connectivity. If only this wasn’t just a concept.

PVI’s color E-Ink displays are a perfect match for Kindles

You know who makes the E-Ink displays on the Kindle? PVI. The Taiwanese company is also the EPD provider for several other tier-1 eReader device makers including Sony. So take a good look at that color E-Ink prototype display currently sitting in a PVI booth at a Shenzhen tradeshow ’cause that’s what you’ll see packed in color eReaders near the end of the year and into 2011. PVI is showing off both 6- and 9.7-inch color prototypes set to hit the manufacturing lines in Q4 (and sampling now), just right for the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX should Amazon choose to keep things simple and just swap out the display (and a minimum of componentry) within its existing device lineup. It’s worth noting that the extra layer of color filtering glass will impact battery life a bit, but certainly not enough to lose its edge on LCDs. And while PVI was demonstrating a color animation running on its new displays, they can’t do video worth a damn due to the slow frame refresh. And don’t expect to see the color EPDs sporting a contrast or color vibrancy anywhere close to what you’ll get from a traditional LCD either. Regardless, people seem smitten by the USA Today’s use of color so we’re sure these color E-Ink displays will find their niche as well.

Google China could be ceasing operations in April, says report

Just when you were hoping things would get better for the bickering search giant and nation-state, along comes apparent word from Shanghai-based Chinese Business News (via Bloomberg), citing an anonymous Google China employee, that the company is looking into closing up shop on April 10th. That’s a far cry from what we heard late last week, that it would stay in the country, albeit in a potentially modified form. Frankly, this is quite sketchy and no one anywhere is corroborating, but according to the report, an announcement is expected on Monday, March 22nd. Better get used to the idea of Bing-powered Android devices.

Android-powered Roewe 350 motorcar hits production line, we reserve space in our garage

We aren’t exactly hopeful that the Roewe 350 will ever ship stateside, but given that our Volt pre-order is still in limbo (and we’re not about to lease a Tesla Roadster), we can’t help but look longingly at this gem. Hailed as the first Android-powered automobile, this here car has just hit the production line, and it’s expected to make its formal debut next month at the Beijing Auto Show. The 350 was based on the N1 concept shown last year, and we’re told that the integrated DVD / GPS navigation system will run on Google’s Android (v2.1) operating system. As you’d expect, the system will be able to pull down real-time traffic reports and figure out the most effective route from point A to point B C, though we suspect you’ll need to rig up some sort of WWAN card in order to check your Gmail on the go. Oh, and did we mention this thing will start at just over ten grand? Huzzah!

Google Exiting China Sucks Just As Much As Censorship DoesIt’s too easy to pat Google on the back for taking such a firm stance against China. The two behemoths’ fingers are twitching by their sides, ready to whip their pistols out. But what of the repercussions on the spectators?

It wasn’t until January 2006 that Google.cn launched, with their Vice President of Global Communications and Public Affairs, Elliot Schrage, admitting that “figuring out how to deal with China has been a difficult exercise.”

What was described as a “challenging, complex, promising market” was obvious to Google however. Expanding there was never something they could ignore. What company, dating back to when the Chinese and Europeans traded goods on the Silk Road, has not wanted to import or export from China? Google couldn’t say no. They promised to “make a meaningful – though imperfect – contribution to the overall expansion of access to information in China.”

Google now employs 700 or so people in China. That’s a lot of job losses if they were to exit completely—though presumably not all of them work on just Google.cn. A lot of companies are reliant on Google, if you consider those who—like many companies in the western world—buy keywords for their products.

Reuters has reported today that 27 Chinese companies which have bought ads on the search engine have banded together and sent Google a letter asking for answers. They want their issues to be addressed, with the letter saying “we see business sliding, but there is nothing we can do…we are waiting now in incomparable pain and disquiet.” These companies have invested in Google, put down pre-payments on keywords and if Google were to shut down its Chinese arm, potentially have drastic knock-on effects for a lot of people. Demands for job loss compensation, company compensation and even just a refund of their money is expected.

Not to mention how this could affect other partners, such as Samsung and Motorola, whose Android phone launches were delayed in China thanks to their association with Google.

Supposedly only one per cent of Google’s revenues come from China, so while they won’t be missing out on much, it’s the users, businesses and partners that rely on Google which will be losing here. So much investment has gone into Google China; a lot of users placed their hopes in Google’s hands that they could one day help them climb out of this tank of censorship—but threatening to pull out of the country altogether unless they bow down to the American giant isn’t the way to do it.

I think it’s time to take a step back and consider the fact that Google pulling out of China might not be the answer. Oh, their exit would be a great step forward in tackling censorship, giving Google’s 35 per cent marketshare-worth of users another reason to be upset at China’s constant internet lockdown. We’ve also already heard that Twitter wants to open the micro-blogging site up to the Chinese, with activist/artist Ai Weiwei being the main advocate for a launch in the country bound by strict freedom of speech issues.

The thing is, Google sacrificed any moral stance they could possibly adopt, when they entered China and set up business in 2005. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of censorship and just can’t imagine living with such heavy restrictions. But how are you going to enter a country, comply with their censorship, then turn around and complain about it five years later? I wish there was an easy way for both sides. Yet barracking Google on isn’t the way to go about it. It’s not for us, for Google, or for anyone to really tell China how to manage itself, how to govern its people and tell them they should be able to access all the information they want. I mean, we can tell China to quit its censorship practices, and we can do it online, because it’s our right to do so in whatever country we live in, but how much use is it going to be, really?

Google knew what they were getting into when they made agreements with the Chinese government, they knew they couldn’t take the country’s censorship lightly, and just like how you and I respect countries’ customs when we visit—by handing a Korean a business card with two hands, or standing on the right-side of the escalators in England—they knew they couldn’t just waltz in and try and change the situation. True, when governments can see ill-goings in other countries they try and intervene, wars break out this way, but was it up to Google to break the Chinese people from their firewall manacles?

Eric Schmidt, Google’s grown-up Chairman and CEO, has been quoted as saying Google is “99.9 per cent” sure they’ll cease working with China. When their corporate mantra is “don’t be evil,” you’ve really got to wonder whether them compromising on their ideas of censorship and values are really as important as the problems which will arise in China for the Chinese and the companies that do business there Google does back out four years after traveling the Silk Road information superhighway.

Google says Android should ‘flourish’ in China, effectively concedes a point

Whether for real or for show, Google tried to make the world believe it would use Android OS as a bargaining chip during the company’s terse, slow negotiations with China. Now, the company has seemingly abandoned that option. During an educational webcast about the future of Google’s mobile business, CFO Patrick Pichette told viewers that he expected the company’s Android platform to do well in China despite all the recent threats and ultimatums in the country. “The Android platform is available to everybody,” said Pichette, “and China is obviously another great market in which Android should flourish.” Good to hear that Google and China are finally in accordance, right? Thing is, with China circumventing Android’s default search engine, Google’s stance against Chinese censorship of search depended on taking Android handsets hostage. But if the OS is indeed available to everybody, that’s not going to happen. The mobile market might one day be dominated by Android, but if Google doesn’t step up, mobile search will go to competitors more willing to play wallball with the Great Firewall of China.

Google to stop censoring Chinese search results ‘soon,’ China warns of consequences

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is making headway with its plans to stop filtering search results in China. Quoting Eric Schmidt as saying that “something will happen soon,” the latest report is that Google is engaged in negotiations with multiple government agencies in China, and the likeliest scenario at this point is that the search giant will remain in the People’s Republic, though it may be in a slightly altered state. “There will be a way for Google to not pull out 100%” says a source familiar with the ongoing discussions, who expects that El Goog will find a patchwork arrangement by which it’ll be able to maintain some parts of its business running while no longer adhering to China’s censorship fiat. For its part, China is keeping up its tough posturing, with the latest statement from its IT ministry describing Google’s plans as “unfriendly and irresponsible” and warning that the company will have to bear the consequences of its actions. What appears certain at this point, however, is that there’ll be no going back to censored Google search results, which is a win in our books whatever the final outcome.

Motorola Puts Bing on Android Phones

Motorola will be loading Microsoft’s Bing search onto its Android cellphones in China this month, ousting Google on its own smartphone platform. Motorola Android models will get the new feature when they are launched in this quarter.

Google isn’t being completely ejected from its own party: Bing, along with an alternative to Google maps, will be offered as a choice to customers when they first fire up the phone. We imagine that, as Google is the second most popular search engine after Baidu, that most people will still opt for it over Bing.

Why would Motorola do this? Speculation from the Wall Street Journal says that Motorola is planning for a future when Google may pull out of China. Reuters says that “Having search alternatives on the Android phones should lessen Motorola’s dependence on Google.” We have a much less conspiratorial explanation: Money. Search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo pay company’s to make their search the default. The Mozilla Foundation, for example, received $66 million from Google in 2007 for search royalties.

Could it be that, in an effort to increase its market share, Bing is offering more money than Google? Perhaps Motorola is just playing it smart, adding the new, money-spinning Bing while keeping Google and its own customers happy by keeping the old options around?

It’s a moot point anyway, we guess. Pretty much anyone knows how to type google.com into the URL-bar.

Motorola partners with Microsoft, will use Bing search and maps on Chinese Android phones

Uh, whoa. When we heard Google’s threatened pullout of China had prompted Motorola to seek out an alternative search provider for its China-bound handsets, we can’t say we were expecting a partnership with Microsoft to result. But here we are, staring at a press release announcing the Bing search and Maps will be the default on Moto’s Chinese Android phones starting in Q1 — and the partnership is described as “global,” so there’s a chance it could spread. That’s just one more slap in Google’s face from Moto, following the release of the Yahoo-powered AT&T Backflip — and another step away from the tight relationship that produced the Droid. And does this mean Motorola might yet build a Windows Phone 7 Series device, despite a very public commitment to Android? We’d say Eric and Sanjay have some unresolved differences to work through.
