At first glance, the N-Control Avenger looks like the fevered dream of a quirky lunatic, destined for fame and failure as a legendary crapgadget. When one showed up on our doorstep, we were admittedly skeptical. Could a lever- and pulley-laden Xbox 360 controller clamshell really give us a competitive edge? Wouldn’t all the extra bits and pieces only result in a cumbersome mess? Is this doodad really worth the $50 asking price? We went hands-on to find out, and boy howdy, were we surprised.

Panasonic Lumix GF3 official: 12.1 MP, 1080i video, no hot shoe in sight (hands-on)

Last week, we caught a glimpse of the Lumix DMC-GF3, a new addition to Panasonic’s ever-growing family of Micro Four Thirds shooters. Turns out, the camera we spied in that YouTube video was legit: the company just made it official and yes, it’s missing a hot shoe. Available in four colors with 12.1 megapixel resolution, it uses Panny’s latest imaging processor, shoots 1080i AVCHD video, and has a 3-inch touchscreen, ISO range of 160 to 6400, and the usual array of intelligent Auto enhancements. Unlike the GF2 — which isn’t going anywhere, by the way — it’s designed with the greenest of novices in mind, which means it forgoes things experienced photogs might like, such as a hot shoe and viewfinder. This one has a mono, not stereo mic, and swaps in a simple scroll wheel on the back side. Panasonic also rejiggered the touch UI to make certain settings easier to find and added a miniature art filter — already a staple on Olympus’ PEN series. Oh, and as a beginner-friendly camera, it looks more like a point-and-shoot than a DSLR — it’s 15 percent lighter than the GF2, and 17 percent smaller.

The GF3 will be available in July for $699 with a 14mm lens, to be followed in late August by a $599 kit that comes with a 14-42mm lens. In the meantime, head on past the break and check out our impressions after spending a few minutes with a not-final unit and a 14mm lens. We only got to play with it in a fluorescent conference room, alas, but hopefully our handful of test shots will give you a taste of what you can do with the depth of field should you spring for the higher-end of the two kits.

Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)


Sony announced the successor to its NEX-3 digital camera earlier this week, so we decided to take a post-E3 road trip down to the electronics maker’s US headquarters in San Diego to check out the $599 NEX-C3 for ourselves. We’ll analyze the new sensor’s image quality in a full review before the camera hits stores later this summer, but from our initial impressions, the new cam appears to offer fairly minor tweaks compared to its predecessor. It’s incredibly small for a camera with an APS-C sensor — perhaps even awkwardly so, when paired with the comparatively massive 18-55mm kit lens or Sony’s enormous 18-200mm optic — but not small enough to be any less functional than the previous iteration. Like the NEX-3, the camera was designed to be held by resting the lens on your left palm, rather than by the grip, so size isn’t likely to be an issue. Cosmetic changes include a magnesium alloy top panel, front microphone positioning, and a more efficient display hinge, which helped reduce the camera’s thickness. We’ll be posting a full review in several weeks, but jump past the break for more observations, and a hands-on video from Sony HQ, shot with the NEX-C3.

SteelSeries Diablo III headset and mouse: demon slaying flair for your skull and desktop

Sure, there are plenty of great gaming goodies to be found on the floor at E3, but some of the best stuff is much harder to find. For example, SteelSeries’ new Diablo III Mouse and headset, which were revealed to us when the prototype devices were pulled from a backpack. The headset packs the same 50mm drivers, retractable boom mic, and overhead suspension design of its Siberia V2 stablemate, but adds some sinister-looking design tweaks. These cans come murdered out in matte black with lava red accents (which can be turned off) courtesy of 18 LEDs, plus matching red external speaker grilles. There’s also a braided cord that plugs into your Mac or PC via USB.

We got to see the Diablo III mouse as well, and found it sports an ambidextrous design similar to the SteelSeries Xai. Its inky exterior is cloaked in smooth, soft touch plastic sporting silvery tribal accents, and a glowing ember Diablo III logo and trim around the scroll-wheel. Given Diablo’s click-happy gameplay, Steelseries gave the mouse beefy Omron switches that are good for 10 million presses (which are backed by a five year warranty). All those clicks are tracked by custom driver software that also lets users tailor the pointer’s button layout by dragging and dropping character-specific commands to the button of your choosing. Now that your appetite has been whetted with the design descriptions, here are the details that matter most: the mouse will cost $69 and the headset $119 when SteelSeries starts selling ’em at BlizzCon in October.

Okay, so the U-shaped contraption you see above won’t get a motorsports enthusiast’s blood boiling quite like the Fanatec CSR Elite wheel we tested earlier, but for a lot of gamers the CSR is a bit too much. The Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel, on the other hand, is rather more manageable — and affordable, with a $59.99 price. It’s a simple, lightweight thing, with an over-sized trigger on the back of each grip. These have very low resistance, so they tend to clap against the back when you mash the throttle, but this plus a long throw means it’s easy to be precise on the gas or brake. And that, of course, is what they’re intended to be used for. On the right prong are the four face buttons, on the left a D-pad. Start and Back are in the middle along with the Guide button, but sadly the L and R shoulder buttons didn’t make the start.

That’s a mighty shame, making us wonder what compatibility will be like for racers that use those for up- and down-shifting. Regardless, with Forza Motorsport 4 the wheel works like a charm. There’s an almost imperceptible amount of lag between you turning the thing in air and your reaction being conveyed on screen, but it’s not a problem. The triggers feel great and, while shifting using the D-pad is a little clumsy, it works. Ultimately and predictably the Speed Wheel doesn’t deliver the most hardcore of racing experiences, but it’ll be a lot more couch-friendly than your average wheel and pedal setup when it ships this October.

Brawn and Beauty Unite in HTC’s Sensation Smartphone

HTC’s Sensation won’t hit the shelves until mid-June, and we’ve been eager to get our hands on the dual-core–powered smartphone for some time. We’ve now taken one for a test drive, and it was worth the wait.

The Sensation’s Qualcomm Snapdragon chip sports 1.2-GHz of processing power, scrolling and whipping through menu screens with ease. Running the Halo-esque HD game Nova on the device made for seamless gaming.

I do wish the phone came with a bit more RAM, though. The 768 MB seemed to buffer multiple application processes fine, but who knows what cool, resource-hogging apps are on the horizon? I’d be more comfortable with a gig under the hood.

More often than not, larger screens mean bigger, bulkier frames. But despite the increased screen real estate, the Sensation is a relatively svelte piece of machinery. The 4.3-inch candybar shape fits nicely in hand, and at 5.22 ounces, it’s no fatty — definitely slimmer than its 4.3-inch cousin, the Thunderbolt.

You’ll appreciate the screen size when you start watching video on the Sensation’s qHD display. I watched a few particularly colorful music videos in landscape mode, and at 960 x 540 resolution, I soaked up every last pixel of video in brilliant detail. And for the size queens out there not satisfied with 4.3 inches, DLNA compatibility allows for video streaming to compatible devices.

Yes, there are cameras — two of ‘em, of course. The 8-megapixel back-facing camera snaps decent enough shots, and with the pre-loaded Qik software, you can use the front-facing camera for video chat with pals. If you’re not into live video feeds, the camcorder supports recording up to 1080p HD resolution. Par for the course these days, but the cameras function as they should.

On-board storage is meager at 1 gigabyte, but who needs internal when you can go SD? The phone’s microSD card slot supports up to 32 GB of extra space.

As far as the user interface goes, I’ll give the standard line I recite whenever I play with an HTC phone: I’m not in love with the skin. All of HTC’s handsets ship with Sense, the company’s customized user interface that’s laid on top of the stock Android operating system. This may not bug the vast majority of consumers. I am, however, a purist: I want bare-bones, stock Android on my phone.

That’s not to say that Sense version 3.0 isn’t without its positive attributes. Lots of bells and whistles in terms of general accessibility. Each menu screen plays home to the most widely used apps, like your calendar, contacts and media player.

I will, however, give the company props for shipping the phone with Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread) installed. It’s the latest version of the operating system, but most 2011 smartphone debuts came with older versions of the software (mostly 2.2 Froyo).

If you’re a hacker-type nerd, the phone comes with one major annoyance: HTC locked the Sensation’s bootloader, which makes modification and customization problematic. The company has since reversed its policy on shipping locked-down phones, but not before pushing out the Sensation to stores. The phone may not be too far from the modding crowd yet, however: an update to the Sensation that unlocks the device is in the works.

HTC’s latest Android phone isn’t hitting the shelves widely until June 15. When it drops, you can pick it up in T-Mobile stores for $200 bucks with a two-year contract.


Deadmund does it right: PlayStation Move and 1:1 swordplay, hands-on (video)

Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest may be built on the mini-game mechanics of last year’s Sports Champions, but its whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We hit up Sony at E3 2011 to see if Deadmund could out-fence the Jedi in a duel of 1:1 swordplay and on-rails battle. What we found was surprisingly responsive. Deadmund himself runs on a pre-set path, plodding his way through a skeleton-filled barracks automatically. Deadmund’s on-screen sword matched our wand-equipped wrist’s every move, accurately slicing skeletor wannabes any way we saw fit. Reaching behind our back with the Move controller let us pull a virtual arrow from a quiver, or we could choose to dispatch baddies by flinging throwing stars.

If the on-screen slashfest lagged behind our physical slicing in any significant way, we didn’t notice — we were too busy loving the Move’s speedy response time. Faster swings produced “stronger” in-game sword attacks, or farther flying shurikens. Last year at E3, we accused the PlayStation Move of just skirting outside of gimmick-land, but it’s hard to argue with 1:1 motion control this responsive. Will Deadmund move Sony’s motion lollypop to the front of the gesture control race? Probably not on his own, but it’s still great to see this tech at its best. We’re live here at Motorola / Sprint’s press event in New York City, and while most of the folks are swarming around the newly minted Photon 4G, we wanted to give some love to the Motorola Triumph, the first Moto handset to land on Virgin Mobile’s network. While the 4.1-inch, Froyo-packing phone and its 2GB of storage might seem ho-hum to spec junkies, it’s a shockingly solid option for a prepaid carrier. And it comes Motoblur-free! How many Photon 4Gs have that to say for themselves? Motorola’s 4.3-inch Photon 4G brings Tegra 2, kickstand magic to Sprint (video hands-on)

You know something big is about to go down when you can get the CEOs from two major tech companies to sit down together for lunch. As suspected, today’s Sprint / Motorola event, presided over by Dan Hesse and Sanjay Jha, marked the debut of the rumored Photon 4G. The handset packs a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in memory, and pre-installed Gingerbread — plus, for better or worse, the latest version of Blur. The skinny new smartphone’s got front and rear facing cameras (the latter of which is eight megapixels), a dedicated camera button, and micro-USB and HDMI ports, which will hook into a soon to be announced docking device.

The handset is the first from a US carrier to offer up global 4G connectivity, and it’s also got 3G support, should you need it (that’s CDMA / WiMAX in the US and GSM internationally). Enterprise functionality, traditionally a bit of an oversight with Android handsets, is present too, thanks to business-minded tools built into Blur and increased security, courtesy of the manufacturer’s acquisition of 3LM (“Three Laws Mobility” to its friends). Sprint’s influence shines through as well, with the inclusion of a built-in active kickstand on its rear, a first for a Motorola device. Flip it open, and the display will automatically switch to landscape mode for optimal viewing.

We managed to get a little hands-on time with the device prior to the announcement, and by and large, the touchscreen and software seemed quite responsive. The handset itself is both skinny and narrow and feels good in the hand, though the smooth back doesn’t offer much in the way of traction for those prone to dropping their phones. The buttons on the device were a bit stiff and sunken, though we’ll have to hold off on passing judgment on that front, since this is a pre-production unit — hopefully we’ll get out hands on something more final in the near future. The Photon 4G is set to hit Sprint this summer — an exact date and price point have yet to be announced.
